Most of the videos of northern lights seen on RUclips and elsewhere are time lapses. Although they are beautiful and awe inspiring, they miss the subtleties of real time video.
In this video we first show an entire night of Northern Lights (taken on March 23, 2023 here in SE Minnesota). This is a time lapse. The second part is video footage of northern lights in real time. Not only will you see the pulsating light from the lights but you will also hear the wildlife calling during the event. Coyotes, dogs, trumpeter swans, barred owls and migrating tundra swans and ducks made the show all that much more spectacular.

Thanks for this! Was watching and photographing them in central Wisconsin. Coolest thing I've ever seen.

Outstanding video! Thanks for sharing this. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you at the Owl Fest. Funny thing is I had seen several of your videos about your solar installation years before I knew about the IOC. Also, we were driving on the back roads heading out of town looking for bald eagles, my wife thought I was nuts when I pointed at your house and said "I know that house!" As Stephen Wright said, "It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to have to paint it." 🙂

Thanks Rob. We'll definitely have to meet the next time you are up this way. Stephen Wright must have been painting the sky last night.

Great job Alan. It was spectacular to watch last night. Finally a clear night no moon. I haven't seen them like that since the 60s.

That's great. What kit are you using?

For time lapse I use the Nikon Z9 and for video I use the Sony A1 for video (8k), then post-process it down to 4k to remove noise. The A1 is about a stop better in low-light performance compared with the Z9. I used to own the A7SIII but sold it. I got tired of the heavy-handed noise reduction at high ISO's that you can't turn off in-camera. No real benefit compared to the A1. I switch off lenses between the two bodies. Typically I use the Sony 14mm 1.8 or the Sony 20mm 1.8 lenses. Both are great for astro work.

@@daycreek I will need to look into those my T5i is starting to die and I was thinking of the a7sii or iii. I will need to look into those ones as well.

@@weathercat4 If you plan to shoot video, I would pick the A7SII over the A7SIII. Sony has some really heavy-handed noise reduction above 80,000 ISO on the A7SIII and you can't turn it off unless you record externally with a Ninja.

Did you shoot this with the A7s iii ? If so what Lens did you use, This is just amazing !

Sony A1 with the Sony 20mm 1.8 in 8k, reduced to 4k. That was for the real time footage. Time lapse was the Z9.
