    Narratively-driven nightmares and delirious deck-building are the names of the game for Cultist Simulator, and not so much simulating what its like to be a cultist. Behold our end as the dark shadows emerge from the mind of Alexis Kennedy, and witness the power of playing cards!

    Found you through Reddit, excellent review! You really get to the heart of the game both mechanically and thematically. Very detailed and very eloquent.

    I will be able to buy this in 4 hours or so.
    Gotta say, if that footage is from your gameplay then you are way better at this than most people. I have never seen someone get far enough to find _those_ places.

    • @CultoftheCyberSkull
      @CultoftheCyberSkull  6 лет назад

      Mystic Spider Thank you very kindly! And I don't know if I'm much better than most people. Some of the footage comes from a mid-game save file the developers so graciously provided (Dr Flay), but I tried to avoid using that as much as possible. I mostly wanted to see what sort of direction the game would take as you progress through to the mid-point. I found a lot of those places in bits and pieces in other runs, though.
      That being said, I have every intention of getting there myself soon. My current run is starting to shape up to that point. ;)

    This game is so addicting to me I've stayed up until like 4 in the morning just completely sucked into it. If I'm not careful, *I* could be the one losing my mind playing this, lol.

    Thank you for a great review video. I think this game is more niche than your reviews imply because it is seems to be a digital tabletop game. I like single player offline games and I like tabletop games, but I find I almost never play my digital tabletop games (because they feel like you are trying to play something sans the tactile experience and through a small bathroom window).
    Of course, there was the magic word that turns me of most modern "board" games - deck builder. My second least favorite after "social (deduction or trading or negotiation) games" (though I really enjoy true cooperative games.
    It wouldn't be financially feasible, but I might get it if it were a physical tabletop game (but I'm not sure it could write be translated to that format). I love long, complicate tabletop games.

    • @CultoftheCyberSkull

      dillenbeck53531 First off, thank you so much for watching!
      I feel the game is incredibly niche, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It takes cues from solitaire and feels accessible enough that anyone can pick it up, but the real trick is whether or not it retains your interest. And that's the real rub with this game. Still, I think that for what it is, it works very well.
      I think that the way that this generates rewards to make it a bit counterintuitive to be a proper tabletop game, but with some reworking it could be translated. But if you don't like deck building, this certainly isn't a game for you :P

      Cultist Simulator isn't actually a tabletop game it would be literally impossible to replicate the experience of the game in an analog format. The entire game is about experimentation and combining two things to create a third, new thing. There's no way to do that with cards or dice. The cards, tokens, and tiles that Cultist Simulator uses are just a convenient visual shorthand to keep you from having to scroll through a bunch of windows.
      It's also in no way a deckbuilder. Again, the cards are just a visualization: you don't shuffle them, they're not "drawn" from any kind of "deck" - they don't even have backsides. They could just as easily have been poker chips or little figurines of the people and objects they represent.
      What the game actually is is a very abstract *adventure* game, like the old LucasArts games, where it's all about combining items in your inventory with each other or with verbs to solve problems. The only difference is that Cultist Simulator has an RNG element where certain actions don't have guaranteed results (eg, if you go to the bookstore, you don't know what book you'll find there) so you can't just follow a walkthrough to 100% the game.

    Great review! I bought the game not long before (I even followed it through launch, but couldn't get it) and I can say, even being an old-schooler who actually plowed through stuff like Carmen Sandiego and Majestic, I found myself stumped at Cultist Simulator at first. But after a few more tries and a strange and constant relationship with the "Pause" button top help me catch my breath from the relentless pace of death: the game started to sink in and grow more and more interesting.
    You deserve more thumbs up. I left mine, so, join my cult. ;)

    Excellent game, but it really forces me into looking up a lot of words in the dictionary as I am not an English native speaker and many of the eloquent words used are far from being common / available in my everyday vocabulary.
    Well, learning while playing :) If it does not reach a state where it is immersion breaking, I will be fine with it.
    Great review, btw.

      That's funny, I find it great when I stumble upon these kinds of words in German, since I'm learning it currently. I would recommend to you Hand of fate 2, it's got plenty of difficult words as well and may very well be what you need to proppel yourself forward and better your english.

    What is the playtime

    • @CultoftheCyberSkull
      @CultoftheCyberSkull  5 лет назад +1

      Technically it's endless. There are lots of different cults in the game the randomness of the cards makes it so there's not really one truly linear path to go. So, really, the playtime is as much as you want to put into it.

    Thanks for the review. It's really hard to know in advance whether I'll like the game, certainly not by just looking at it. What puts me off most so far are the timers. It looks like a glorified browser game. N seconds/minutes/hours until you are allowed to click again and progress in the game. I've seen enough of this bs.

    • @sirdiealot7805

      Unfortunately I got it and found it quite bad, especially the UI (played about 20h sofar). I heard they made some improvements recently. I won't touch it again until the UI is massively improved.

      So it's wonderful but you have to have a love for reading. The Legacy mechanic 2 is quite huge and it's only going to be expanded on Post Release plus if you got the game now you're going to get all the DLC for free. But yes to Legacy mechanic is not fully implemented To my knowledge yet. How it works is actions in game on unlock Legacies. And they all come with different advantages in the previous Legacy is going to be related to the previous playthrough there going to be some way related to the previous played occultist. AK set and I haven't seen it yet but I bet it will be in game is that you can run into your previous cultist in different ways be at notes people referencing them which I do see to them being spirits let's see if they die which I have not. And the thing is it they're going to keep adding endings in different victories and sub victories. Even the standard victories of the Ascension are just foundation for crazy stuff

    Cultist Simulator is a dark diamond, playing it really feels like being part of a cult as it - fittingly - isn't that well known but it gives pleasures that most games can't hope to achive.
