- Riding sheep is a wild and woolly experience for the youngest rodeo competitors. Many may have been on ponies trained to ride but sheep are a totally different animal. The Clarendon Outdoor Entertainment Association (COEA) opened Independence Day festivities with a July Fourth Junior Ranch Rodeo. Five-member teams representing ten working ranches in the region demonstrating their working ranch skills.
The Saint's Roost Independence Day Celebration has been held in Clarendon, Texas for 143 years. There are three rodeos during the celebration with kids riding sheep also known as mutton bustin'.

More riders and a higher percentag of good rides I saw all season this year. Clarendon is in the heart of cattle country on the Texas High Plains and this Independance Day rodeo has been going on for 143 years.

My niece did this at a rodeo out here in Minnesota and she absolutely killed it she had a crazy mutton balls to the walls and nothing it did could knock her off she's only 6 and won first place. It's fun watching these little kids.

I'm glad to see more helmets & safety/impact vests. Even so...the sudden stop at the end of a ride can still suck. Glad lots of the kids seemed to have more fun than tears.

Really??? HOW???? From what I saw the sheep simply trotted off unharmed. Ant the kids seemed to be having a really good time. The kids are not being foreced. They wanted to give it a try and their parents let them. Sure one or two may get a bump or bruise but I'm sure they get hurt much worse riding a bike, skateboard or playing football.
