The equal length absolutely sings like a beautiful inline 6
It’s glorious especially up high in the rpm range
Each has their own strongpoints; love the turbo spool of the single but loooove the tone and rasp delete of the equal. Definitely the best comparison video I've seen
I 100% agree and you can’t go wrong with either, thanks so much for the feedback!
Shoutout to you for taking the time to do a very good comparison video. I like the custom plate too 😄💪🏾
Thanks so much Kenny! Of course, figured many other people had the same dilemma!!
I would like to say thank you for doing this; currently trying to decide between the same.. gratefully you have allowed me to listen to both without spending and regretting. EL seems to be my choice after hearing the comparison.
That single midpipe just hits different for me. Thanks for the vid! 🔥
Awesome! It sounds amazing especially down low. Glad you enjoyed!
1:24 ... we were all there at some point heh. I currently have mine set to 3200 RPM minimum and 0.6s duration, going to turn them down even more with my next setup.
Even stock turbos howl like a banshee through the single midpipe! I'm about to swap mine out for a resonated EL... after the car makes a quick pit stop to have the factory cats reinstalled so it can pass emissions. After doing that dance it will be Eisenmann catless DPs > Active EL resonated mid > MPE.
After living with catless/Active single mid/MPE for several years, IMO it's just too loud and flabby sounding. I leave the valves closed probably 95% of the time now. If it's not brought into check by swapping in the EL resonated midpipe, I'll probably bite the (big) bullet and throw some Active GESI catted downpipes on it. Going to rejigger the tune too so it's more "backfire" than burbles. Upping the minimum RPM to 5500 and setting duration to 0.2s. That way, it should give just one loud bang when you're really giving it the beans, and you can actually drive around with the valves open and not draw too much attention of the "unwanted" variety.
@@blendtecbrah5761so in ur opinion , full straight piped single is louder than full straight piped equal length?
@@user-mq5jd5wy6p I had the resonated EL mid installed this week and IMO it's a little bit quieter than the single mid, likely due to the resonator.
Omg that equal length really made it sound classic straight 6 w a hint of turbo spool! 🙌🏼🙏🏼 Sounds amazing! Both set ups actually sound really good but I'd I had to choose for personal preference I'd go w equal length! I'm all for raspy too so even to try the single would be an honor! Beautiful car can't wait to pick on up my self!
I think you can’t go wrong with either. They both sound amazing in their own ways: the single midpipe has much more noticeable turbo spool, but with the equal length it just sings up top. Thanks for the kind words. Best of luck
@@VinceFung of course brother!! I love that white too. White is such a clean color. You can color match any wheels and there's a lot of room to work w for other coloring combos. I'm in a 2018 m550 right now and working on my n54 335 sedan and a 2014 m6 I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor and getting it track ready. They just don't hold the reliability that the M3 and m4 hold tho hence my reason for really wanting the M3 or m4. I feel like I'll get more beneficial track time w them and keep the other cars for show and just to drive! Can't wait to see more of ur build! God bless you brother!
Congrats on the 1k subs 🎉🎉🎉.
Thank you homie!! Saw that you did the crankhub yourself! Super cool.
@@VinceFung yeah thanks, ready for tune next.
Great comparison video
Thank you for the kind words! Very appreciated
Single mids for sure..more turbo spools it seems and there’s the deep more tone
single midpipe ftw💯 awesome video thank you
Hell yeah!! I'm glad you liked it :)!
IMO, equal length is very obviously better
I absolutely agree! The only thing I do miss on the single mid pipe is the more prominent audible turbo spool.
Great video! Really helpful. Please can you let me know if the backbox is stock? Cheers.
Hi Graham! Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, the back box is completely stock (non zcp).
You should add a AR or ER catless downpipe and repost
AA + S55 are the best ! who knows how it sounds in the combination AA mid pipe + Akrapovic slip on
Not even a contest. EL mids actually make the sports car sound like one. Single just makes it sound like any other 6 cylinder.
Great comparison! Do you find just the equal length midpipe loud enough? I’ve always done full exhaust with downpipe on my old subies so im wondering if id be satisfied with just the midpipe…
I definitely find it loud enough! I’ve had just the midpipe for both set ups and find it to be the perfect volume. The only thing I would like is some spool but a catless downpipe makes these EL midpipes sound very farty down low. The best set up I’ve heard so far if you want more volume with the EL is the M performance rear muffler (v1/v2). Nothing beats that EJ257 though!!
Are these the AFE Track carbon intakes? Also what camera & software do you use for the cinematics? Looks fire
Yes they are the AFE Track Carbon Intakes! As for the camera, I use a lumix G7 and for the software I use Adobe premiere pro. Thank you I appreciate it!!
Dope video thank you. What made you go for non-resonated versions? Thanks
Thank you! I choose to go with non resonated as I plan on keeping stock downpipes.
@@VinceFungdo u think single or equal mp is louder when paired with catless dp?
I would think the single would be louder with a catless DP due to the more direct flowing design vs. the equal length "zig zag". If you're going catless DP, I would definitely go with the single and avoid the EL as it tends to be really raspy below 2k rpms, with the DCT exaggerating tis even more. @@user-mq5jd5wy6p
Equal length sounds miles better
What do you think about those being swayed to go back to single for a fuller sound recently? I went to single and like it but now going try the new Valvetronic EL.
Honestly I do miss the spool of the single mid pipe but the top end is where the EL really shines for me. Low end though, Single definitely sounds better IMO.
@@VinceFung yup, the engine revs much better, or alteast sounds better with the equal length. Your set-up definetely matters as well bc being catless can make it sound awful without resonators. Catted (oem and high flow) sound the best without resonators.
@@VinceFung how about single with catless downpipes on the top end compared to EL with OEM downpipes
Great video! My F83 is AA equal + Dinan muffler. I'm on the fence to upgrade to CTS high flow cat downpipe 🤔
Thanks so much! I was looking for the Dinan muffler too but wasn't patient enough and found a turner motorsport muffler locally. High flow cat should sound decent! I've heard otherwise though for EL + catless DP's lol
@@VinceFungmy EL is non-resonated so I won't go with catless DP😅
I have a Dinan muffler and debating EL .. now confused if to get resonated /non resonated. Did you get the CTS DP ? How was it on sound? I’m planning on leaving mine stock.. thank you.
Im also running the AA EL non res with catless downpipe and M Performance muffler.
Which muffler do you have, i feel as if you’re car sounds a bit different than mine
Stock muffler! The M performance muffler might make the tone a little bit higher with it being titanium but without a doubt sounds great.
Hey bro, great video! I have two questions for ya…
Is there any more noticeable drone during daily driving?
And which part of PA you from? I’m out in the Poconos.
Thank you! There is only noticeable drone if under moderate load around 2k rpm’s. I am about an hour west of Philadelphia! I love the Poconos! I go there every day for MPact.
@@VinceFung thanks for the reply! I guess I’ll see you at mpact this year🤜🤛
@@Adam__B Hell yeah man see you there!!
@@VinceFung Is this drone for both setups? Was there a volume difference between the setups?
@@louis4357 Yes both had drone in the same RPM range. I didn’t really notice one being particularly louder than the other personally.
Thanks a lot man, really helpful. I have an equal on my f80, but cant deal with the lack of body, etc, even with the swap of turbos, which improved the tone. Guess I’ll try the single with Dinan axle.. Does this intake sounds better then the Eventuri by any chance? Will be getting one soon.
Not a problem at all, I’m glad you found it helpful 😃. I would say Eventuri sounds much better and louder, mainly because the AFE carbon intake I’m running has a heat box that may muffle the sound. However, I have not yet compared the Intake Air temperatures between the two intakes so I am not quite sure on which is superior. Eventuri looks a HELL of a lot nicer though as well lol!
As for the exhaust, I have heard Dinan works well with the equal length. I have heard that catless downpipes will make it sound unpleasant, so I personally would stick with a high flow catted downpipe if you plan on doing downpipes. My current set up in this video is with the stock down pipes.
@@VinceFung Thanks man, guess Eventuri is the one. I had burger intake, but recently my F80 reached 620+ whp and the guy who did the job said burger is crap and the original intake of the car is actually the best, especially for better low rpm power, so i'm back with the original, but lacking the sound of the turbos. This mechanic did dozens, maybe more then 100 F80, and more importantly, he showed me in the dyno. He said that not even Eventuri is actually better then original, but as good, but if I want the sound so I should get it. And yeah, it looks really good.
@@VinceFung You meant the Dinan dont work well with catless downpipes (and not the equal lenght), right? Really? Didnt know that, I actually have catless downpipes, even before I had 620+ whp.
wym by body. Like the mid low frequencies are gone? While i like the high pitch its sorta somewhere in between a ferrari and a 350z lol i cant decide which its more close to
Both sound awesome as hell. What steering wheel is that?
Thank you! I purchased it from a business in Germany that remanufactures them. I've had it for about four years and I daily drive this car all year round to work and it's just as good as new! Here's the link: ebay.us/4yDXAe
@Vince Fung It is a great looking wheel. I like that the leather is on the high contact areas instead of alcantara compared to the V2 M Performance wheel. Thanks!
@@MrTwizlexable I agree! This definitely helps with the longevity of the material and the steering wheel itself. I just had to get a new one because the previous owner left a real sticky steering wheel for me LOL!
is the single midpipe louder than equal length? every time i hear equal length it sounds a lot quieter
I could not tell you to be honest as they both sound just as loud to me in the car. EL has just as much drone but it’s very minimal and at the lower RPM range (2k ish). But in a design aspect, it would make sense that the single would be louder but again I personally didn’t notice much of a difference. Maybe the ones you heard were resonated?
Single sounds better than I thought but the EL trumps it
I definitely like the EL higher up in the rev range. it's glorious
@@VinceFung Haha I just learned about EL for BMW's so it's all new to me. I thought it was only a Subaru thing 😂
@@spoolindsm127 Lolol I also came from a Subaru so I was just as surprised. Unequal length on an ej257 is an unbeatable sound but the EL on ej257’s make them sound like wild rally cars. Can’t really go wrong with either
@@VinceFung Haha no way! So that's the natural progression 😂 True UEL sound is classic but 1000% nothing beats an EL straight piped EJ 💪
@@spoolindsm127 And the external waste gate 😫😫. “SWAAAHHHHHH”
Single
What would you recommend with a REMUS cat back exhaust? I can’t decide /:
Do you mean with a Remus muffler? Honestly prior to going AA EL, I was very set on the Remus muffler with the AA Single mid pipe.
Thank you Vince!
with the el midpipe what dp should i use? also is there any way i could try and increase the turbo spool sound a bit? thanks
I would recommend a high flow cat downpipe with the EL. The best way to really hear the spool is to go with a catless downpipe, however with the EL I do not recommend it as there is a very buzzy rasp around 2500rpm’s, especially on DCT cars as it’ll hold around that rpm when driving casually. If you really want to maximize the spool sound without a lot of rasp, go with the single midpipe and catless downpipes. Just my two cents
got it thanks so much for your response, and i have a 6mt just like yours! what setup are you running rn ? and is the turbo still decently loud with the el and high flow dp? thanks
@@josha8086 Of course! Currently I'm running the EL with a turner motorsports muffler.
As for the turbo spool sound, It's definitely a lot quieter than the catless DP/single mid pipe set-up, but it is still audible. I remember seeing a few videos with a high flow catted dp & EL on both RUclips and the Facebook group for F8X
Hey bro what crackle/pop tune are u running? It sounds more aggressive than GTS burbles
I might have had it at a higher aggression at around 7 but I sort of got annoyed with it after a while hahaha.
@@VinceFung Damn that was only 7? I cant imagine 12
@@erictran2286 Yup lol! It could be the microphone accentuating the burbles. 12 would probably be for someone looking for straight up gun shots/flames LOL.
@@VinceFung yea your 7 burbles sound really good I'm gonna copy the set up!!!
What’s the difference between this AA single mid pipe and the VRSF single mid pipe ? 🙂
Honestly not quite sure, but from what I’ve seen they sound very similar. Besides originality, I can only think of a slight difference in design and differences in clearances.
@@VinceFung btw stock muffler ?
@@M3F80BMWS55 Yup! Stock muffler! Any other questions feel free to let me know.
How do you get the cold start disabled?
Bootmod3! It’s a life saver
How is the drone on the EL?
There is very little drone, the only time I notice a slight hint of drone is around 3000-3500 rpm's. If you're in a high gear and on the highway at around 70-75 mph, there is no drone.
the m4 is one of the prettiest cars of all time
Agreed!!
Is a tune needed when changing the Midpipe?
Nope but it would be wise to do so to take advantage of your modifications
do you have downpipes or is this stock cats?
Nothing else done except for the Mid pipe. Stock downpipes, stock rear non ZCP muffler
What intake do you got?
For the clips with the single mid pipe, I ran the BMS Intakes. However with the EL mid pipe, I ran the AFE Carbon Intakes with the box as I faced severe heat soak with the BMS intakes.
Single sounds crazy and probably will be my choice. Any recommendations on the DP?
It definitely sounds mean! If I were to stick with single, I’d honestly probably go with ARM or something similar in that price range but I would definitely go catless downpipes with the single midpipe.
As for the equal lengths midpipes, high flow catted downpipes are the way to go as it welcomes a putrid rasp on the low end.
What axle back are you using? Stock downpipes?
Stock non-zcp rear muffler and stock downpipes. Only exhaust modification with these two set ups was the mid pipe (non resonated for both).
Is EL at 2k and under raspy or have rattle.
I have noticed a little rasp below 2k for a quick second but I believe the notorious rattle below 2k rpm is wastegate related, unless there was installation error on the midpipe.
Which one did you end up staying with?
Ended up sticking with the Equal length! I really like the way it sounds in the upper rpm’s but the single Midpipe sounded a little bit better in the low rpm’s in my opinion lol.
@@VinceFung I agree with that. The stock exhaust sounds really good with it. Like the right amount of aggresiveness, deepness in tone, and screams at WOT. I have an MPE which axtually sounds good with the resonators, but it missing a little bit of what I like in the ZCP muffler, but still screams, lol
@@carsandcoldbrew6489 I want an MPE or Dinan muffler but I’m not sure how much if a difference it is with the stock non zcp muffler vs a MPE/Dinan. I really have to hear it in person but that’s a tough scenario to find lol. Dinan mufflers also apparently have valve issues so in that case I’d lean more towards MPE.
@@VinceFung the valves on my Mpe rattle for like 2 seconds on a cold start, lol. I think something like Meisterschaft have solid valves. I'm back on my stock zcp muffler and prefer the all around sounds it produces, although the MPE is a tad louder, I'm not sure what I want, lol. The mpe is noticably lighter and doesn't drone in the lower RPM range. I want to hear all of them in person too, particularly a Remus.
@@VinceFung Nice. I have some videos of my MPE with AA resonaors. I'm also selling my MPE v2.
What's the full exhaust setup?
Strictly just the midpipes for the exhaust. Nothing else
I heard single mids better with catless and highflow better with equal length and thst catless with equal don’t sound as good
Yup I would have to agree. The equal length with catless DP's are even more raspy low end.
Hi Im a fangirl #1 uwuwu
Is this with everything else stock?
Exhaust wise, yes everything else is stock. Stock downpipes and stock rear muffler. Thanks!
Which one you think is best if catless downpipes may be added in the future?
Single for sure. A catless downpipe with the EL will sound very raspy from what I’ve heard, especially down low. I would personally go with the single in this situation but some may enjoy the EL + catless DP more
@@VinceFung thanks! That’s what I was hoping for

Sorry for the late response. That was the MDM kicking in. Basically traction control not allowing any slip and will cut your power/fuel. A lot of people have this same question!
car with single midpipe sounds like a 4 banger lmao
