- Ever wondered how to make a HUGE, awesome rug that feels like clouds beneath your feet? Well, wonder no more. Enjoy the tutorial!
WHERE TO GET ROVING: amzn.to/2MBDRo7
Have fun and be sure to post your giant rug pictures on your favorite social network and share with me! Thanks!
I used soft merino wool which is more spendy than other types of roving, so feel free to use Corriedale wool or BFL (Blue-Faced Leicester) wool, or even cotton, bamboo or any other type of wool.
Another option is to cut 2-3" strips of fabric and use that. That's a much cheaper route. The roving can cost several hundred dollars for this size of rug. I used 7.5 lbs total.

my gramma used to have thoses rugs in every room of her large house i loved them all she had all sizes from small in the bathroom to large in the living room she had made them all! BOTH SHE AND MY MOM and my aunt have all died this could be very valuble to me if i can grasp it but first the basic stuff
Thanks!! I just grabbed some wool and knitted a thingy that goes under a cup lol🤣🤣
I was so impressed with your video that I had to give this a go. Unfortunately I could not get a hold of roving, so I decided to "finger knit" approx 60 meters of thick wool which took about 1 week. And then "crochet" the 60 meters into the circular rug! It turned out awesome, and very thick which is great to sit on, it turned out 2 feet wide and looks incredible in a nice dark purple! :)
+Sarah LL Impressive! :D
Can you clean something that thick?
Thanks.
I would assume you could hand wash it... I dont know however ;)
+megan holmes I have washed it seeveral times, hand wash in a big bucket/tub in cold water with wool detergent has worked really well! To dry, i have not hung it on a line, but layed it out on a towel under my pagola so it is not in direct sunlight (so it wont fade) ☺

Thank you, thank you, thank you for finally making a tutorial that makes sense. I just crocheted a small round rug for my bathroom out of cut up sheets. I have taken the rug apart three times before this because I did not like how it came out. This time, it is going to stay. Thanks again for sharing.
this is crocheting blown up into a larger tool-free scale. beautiful work and informative, thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much!

You can make another one the same size. Use that one and the other one and stuff it with fiber fill, make a huge pillow!!!
Excellent! I am not a crocheter. For Christmas I got a set of round looms and have been knitting like a fool! It's my new love! Since I've learned to recognize stitches I've been delving into crochet and knitting. For someone(me) who has never crocheted a single thing, this video is very easy to follow! I'm currently gathering some old t shirts I haven't been able to make myself throw away, to make some t shirt yarn out of and then I'm going to make this rug to go in front of my kitchen sink!! I'll post it on my blog and send you a link if you would like to see the finished product! I knew I was keeping those old t's for a reason!!
I'm doing the same, cutting up tshirts to make yarn and make a rug like this. I'm too poor to buy the roving.
Raeanna McMahan lol im too poor too!!! the t-shirt is a great idea. I think im gonna go to the thrift story tho since I don't really have a lot of t-shirts
That's what I had to do too. I went to the half off Saturday at Goodwill and snagged a bunch. My rug came out good!
nice!!!! i still havent even started

I have zero experience crocheting and you made this very simple to understand and follow. Thank you.
I love your hat, Chandi! Thanks to you I learned how to knit (I don't though. I know how, but I haven't had success) and crochet. I LOVE crocheting. I do it all the time now! I just want to say thank you, Chandi.

very good idea...
would loveeeeee a tutorial on a rectangular version!
I love this, cannot wait until a fiber show to get tons of roving like that. Or go to my friends and see what she has. I also have a shop I will now have to visit to request a large amount like this. Wonderful energetic tutorial. Thank you.
Wow what a creative ideas on how to use a rug! you are so bubbly and cute. Thanks for sharing it. Keep making more videos.
I want to try this pattern with tshirt yarn! It looks great!
Hi, I just saw this video, I love it! I tried going on your shop site, and I couldnt create an account, nor did I find roving...... the yarns I did see are all beautiful! I just bought a yarn haul.... but my next haul, im absolutely getting yarn from your shop. They all are beautiful colors! Btw, I just subscribed
Thank you so much for sharing and teaching. I knit but need help with crochet and I love the rug!
Love this tutorial! Not just the rug, but the music is very relaxing, and with basic crochet knowledge, the construction is explained very simply. I greatly appreciate that when I watch your tutorials, you don't consume time with mistakes, or talk about anything but the task at hand. Thank You Chandi ❤️
Thank you Lindsy! ❤️❤️
Love this rug ~ excellent job!
Thanks!
I am go through your video its mind blowing
+Sunil Keshari thanks!

Most Welcome
i love it i just cant seem to do it
What a fun way to use unspun roving! And the rug is gorgeous!
I just started to relearn how to knit today, I use to crochet also and will try to relearn that next. I really want to get to the point of being able to make this. It just seems like rocket science at this point. Fingers crossed I will get to be able to make this someday!
Love the video . I can see many of these rugs in my place. Thanks
Sensational job! I love this rug so much 👏👍❤️❤️
I loved this video thanks Shandy ! Especially the part where you dance around on the rug at the end ! thanks for this wonderful video.
This was super well done ! Your instructions were very clear and the little reminders about counting ur stitches as you finish each spiral was needed for me, so thank you ! Super inspired now !!
Glad it was helpful!
That was a great vid, but did anyone else's heart skip a beat when she said she had 7 POUNDS of roaving? I had to go back and watch the vid again because I was daydreaming of all the spinning I could do with 7 POUNDS of roaving! Beautiful rug!
And although it is VERY cute and neat, you'll never be able to wash this. :(

7 and a HALF Pounds! Where to buy?
Erika Rodriguez
Why can’t it be washed?
This is fantastic! I want to try this with cut up t-shirts!
I love how you ended the round! i have never seen it ended like that. i must try! i've made several rugs. one thats my favorite i used fabric that had been waiting to be used for 4 years! purple and grey stripes. took me a while to cut it up. total cost less then 10 bucks! what! made a 5ft by 4 ft oval t-shirt type material rug. took an hour to hand crochet.
Courtney B Awesome!
I can't wait to get good enough to try this. Thanks for posting!!!
I love this. /thank you so much for the tutorial x
Where can I buy this amount of wool and how much does it cost?
Love it! The most accessible tutorial I’ve come across :)
I love this idea! It was very beautifully done and when I get some funds I will try this! I love this idea. I am a new crocheter and I am making a blanket as we speak LOL but not with roving with regular yarn but I am open to new and exciting projects!
Christina Marrow yay!
I feel like I would have to sell my first born for this much roving!! $$$ it is so beautiful though!
it is so cool
it literally blows my mind! you're great! thank you!
+Serena Suraci
Ooh, love that! And I need rugs desperately!
For the people who are asking what yarn she is using: it's not yarn. Lol- it's called roving- it's what is used to make yarn- like before its spun. I haven't seen it in craft stores so you might have to find local farms that raise sheep that would have the wool, or just go on line. She said she used 7lbs of it for the size rug, and I think she ha a shop herself. It is pretty expensive, and I asked if I could use a supper bulky yarn and it would work but you would have to use multiple strands-
ت
I found a version that is close to what she's using in the video in Michael's if anyone is looking. It looks just as good as what she used and is very soft, I used Loops & Threads brand Huge (Super Bulky). My local store was sold out when I decided to make the rug I was working on bigger, so I used Loops & Threads brand Biggie (Super Bulky) as a border. It's not as soft, but still has the rope look and is a little more durable than the Huge kind.
+Wyestael what was the price point?
stacie cook 6.99 per skein, but it was on sale and I can't remember what the regular price is.

Your video is rather relaxing.

I don't even remember how I got here but DAMN she can come over to my house ans make any kind of rug she wants
Would you be able to do this with smaller yarn?
8
Yes I tried!
I tried to learn this with the hooks and yarn but somehow you doing this with your hands made more sense lol

Wonderful idea! I'm going to try it right away, but using T-shirt yarn. Great! A big rug, easy, no loom, and for me, very little expense.
Perfect!
Fantastic work!
I jus love your creations!
Really original and beautiful !
For the cost of this Yarn you can buy a really good Rug lol. It´s cool and impressive, but the costs are too much
hi wow it is so cool bye
Simple but looks amazing shall b trying this one out thanks for the tutorial x
Love it, and I can't wait to try
جميل جدا 😃😆😗
If anyone found me on the floor doing this they would think I had absolutely lost my marbles. That being said I am so going to try this one day. There are so many different terms online, for someone who knows nothing about processing fibers. I'm tempted to just send them a link of your video and say "I need this but colorful, how much?" But, one day, not today. Was wondering though since you didn't specify in your video I think, how many more rows did you do before you finish it? For 7 1/2 lbs at least?

hi
I wish I could afford the $200 plus for the yarn. I would LOVE to be able to make cushy beds for my pets.
+Judith S I have made a lot of rugs like this and a simple weave type with strips of material and it is pretty cushy
Luna Persephone Please explain. you use regular yarn and tshirt yarn together?
I can't wait to walk on it😆💗
OMG, I love this rug💓
No. You can never wash it as there are no twists or braids. This is beyond cost prohibitive to the point where it's just wasteful. This is tantamount to buying an italian ice machine, in the winter in new england, to make snowballs. If you want to make this then rip up old sheets into long strips, braid them, then crochet as shown here. You would have to have HORRIBLE money management skills buy this much roving on etsy to use on this one project, especially without at least spinning it first.
Next week we'lll learn how to turn a brand new ferrari into a fun clubhouse for your cats.
If it's their money and they want to buy it, then who cares??
Dylan McConnell Would you knot the strips together to make one length?
+Dylan McConnell Thought the same about the waste... waste of money and waste of great wool that could be used for more useful things with (socks, sweathers,...)!! But it's a nice tutorial video so for this thank you CHANDI!!
+Dylan McConnell Yeah that's my thing (great analogy btw) - this is just way too expensive (with or without a coupon) that it's ridiculous. Spending roughly $120 on just the wool to make this one rug that can never even be washed which means you better not have kids or pets or clumsy people near it ever or it's going to look atrocious pretty quick is really over the top (especially since I wanted to make this for my mom's class and she teaches pre-school, SO not happening) it would be more cost effective to just go out and buy a rug from the store! Even the super expensive places like Pottery Barn have rugs for less than what this would cost and I don't have to spend hours making it (although a nice rug from Target will obviously do just fine) kinda disappointed that this is so expensive because it is a lovely rug. Maybe I will try it with a super bulky yarn braided together ( I would do old sheets but I think the yarn might be cozier for the little ones). :/ off to the craft store.
Dylan, I used a type of wool sold in Michael's. I couldn't find the exact type of wool she's talking about here, and I had the same concern for price. The kind I used looks just as good, cost me $45 (for a rug double the size of the one she did in the video), and the type of material I used can be hand washed and air dried. No reason to be so pessimistic when a little research can solve all the problems you had with how this rug was done.
anotherone 😂😂
This is beautiful you also made it look so easy
This is the coolest thing I have ever seen!
May I ask, how much did you pay for the 7 lbs of roving ??
Nadia Ch. I don't remember exactly but usually this much will run you about $350
Ooooh okay... Well, that's one DIY I'm not going to do then !! I was confused when I saw people selling 100grams and stuff like that, but I wasn't expecting it to be this expensive, thanks though ^^
Nadia Ch. As a spinner, I was horrified to see that she was using such beautiful roving. I mean, that's cool that you can afford to turn 7lbs of gorgeous merino into a rug, but I'm totally not going to do that. It's just absurd to me.
cross fit Your comment made me laugh so much !!! But she never said that this was cheap or anything ^^
weehasu I know nothing about roving, but I see that the roving she uses looks way too good to be used as a rug !!
Waste of time, materials, and talent. The roving will snag on everything, and be shredding and shedding continuously. Ridiculous.
+Sandra Cervantes 😔
+ExpressionFiberArts but at least it will make us happy while it lasts lol and it looks awesome!!
+Squirtlesquad54
This rug is not a work art. Crochet is an ancient craft that should be respected. Women (and men) have been making rugs using crochet for centuries, we don't need someone to come along and 'teach' us how to waste precious wool. This rug will not hold up to daily use.
+Sandra Cervantes While I understand that you think this is a waste of time, I disagree because I believe that there is no rule as to what you do with your money and skill/talent. Additionally some people know how to take care of this. While I am not as educated about this as you are, I can assure this is not a waste I find it quite beautiful. 😊
@@kaleochipz so, it's 2020 - have you made this rug yet?
SOo beautiful! SOo creative
This is a GOREGEOUS rug!!!!!!
Excellent video. I prepared a rug with my old sarees which were dumped aside. . . .
Priyanka Bekal great idea!
Very Nice and Explained So Clearly... Very Good Instructor!
Wow superb. I love it. Its so easy that too without any crochet needle or anything. 👌👌👌👌
Thank You!
That looks so cool I am going to have try and make one
What a great idea. I would love to make one for my daughter to take to her dorm room when she starts college in the Fall of 2015. Thank you.
Now I know what to do with all of those flat sheets my family doesn't use! Thank you so much!
+Shaina Moravec Perfect! : )
very smooth and lovely. I'm going to try it now 🙆😍

awesome instructions..... Working on mine now.
+Lois C Wonderful!
My mom crochets, and I always wanted to learn. She tried to show me several times but I just never caught the pattern... until now. Using this big wool and your hands made it all make sense to me now. I think I might still start with something that I can do with my hands/fingers, but then I might graduate to a needle. Thanks.
+Joe Joseph Awesome! : )
Very talented, thanks for sharing
Thanks for the compliment!
Beautiful, Love How You Ended it.🎉😊
So glad! 🧡
This looks so cool!
Thanks!

Miss Bee search for "wool roving" - it's unspun fiber.

You are crazy ❤❤❤❤
Woooow its lovely weaving....
Thank you! 😊
Increadible work! Congrats!!
,
Fantastic and marvelous.
Thank you! Cheers!
its very beautiful
Great job.
I've often wondered about the durability and cleaning with these "roving knit" projects -- BUT!!!! I'm going to now pull a bunch of rags (and rag sheets) that I've been stuffing into dog beds for filling, and I'm going to try ripping the rags into THICK strips and finger-knit dog beds!
lindo trabalho ,mãos preciosas .
This is wonderful and fantastic AWSOME!!!
Gracias señora del tapete. Usted es lo máximo. La queremos. Whoop. Saludos.
De nada! ❤️❤️
I love it!
I think it would also look nice with different colors cut out of old clothes! :)
