    • @dovnotarius2825
      @dovnotarius2825 2 года назад +14

      Actually it maybe connected (the fact you are a foreigner and the fact you understood) because native speakers of English usually have a bias towards their accent unknowingly, so when they hear another accent they usually will not understand it. But the foreigner doesn't have this kind of bias. I'm a foreigner too so I learned my English from a lot of sources so I usually will understand most of the accents I hear.

    I think Brits generally have a very good ear for deciphering accents because we're used to hearing a variety of them. I didn't realise people as far down as Birmingham used "our" when talking about close family members, eg "our John". I always thought that was a very northern thing.

    I'm from North West England (South Lancashire) and have no problem understanding the Birmingham accent despite our accents being very different. The two most impenetrable British accents have to be Geordie (Newcastle) and Glaswegian (Glasgow). If you want an example, the British classic sitcom 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet' has some strong Geordie accents whilst something like 90's comedy 'Rab C. Nesbitt' showcases a thick Glaswegian accent. Good luck understanding either if you're not used to them.
