I would like to apologise for the shaky camera footage on some occasions. I need to buy a longer Camera extension pole to rest on the floor, the one I am using now attaches to the table and so shakes when I am drawing.
In this video I try to layout the differences between the Derwent Chromaflow and the Derwent Coloursoft. Both pencils in my opinion are excellent and although I wasn't too surprised with the overall conclusion for both the ColourSoft and Chromaflow, there was one or two little surprises.

The paper used for testing both the Derwent ColourSoft and Derwent Chromaflow was the Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Velum. This is a fantastic paper surface for any colored pencil artist to use, be they beginners or even more experienced. Whilst not full 100% cotton, this excellent quality velum surface provides enough tooth to allow fantastic pencils such as the Coloursoft and Chromaflow to layer. For higher quality paper take a look at the 400 and 500 Series paper from Strathmore.

I have a theory that softness vs hardness in coloured pencils is due more to the type of binders (methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, other synthetic polymers, etc.) present (and the amounts present) than anything else. :) I wonder if the Chromaflow pencils have slightly more binder in their formula. I also wonder if some of the softness (and opacity) of pencils like Coloursoft and Prismacolor is due to the addition of kaolin clay to the cores - maybe that's causing the "claggy-ness" that you experienced when layering. So much chemistry in pencil cores. :) Thanks for the great comparison video, Harry!

      @TheArtGearGuide  2 месяца назад +17

Your theory is absolutely correct, it took me a few years of research and waiting to talk with Chemists from two of the major pencil companies before I could make my video titled Wax and oil Myth. They use different types of wax and they have varying levels of hardness and softness.
When I first got into reviewing colored pencils it was widely considered by many at that time that wax equal soft core and oil was a hard core. However, the Derwent Artist pencil was considered a "Wax" based pencil and it was that reason I had to find out the truth. If you look back at my early videos you will see that almost all of the comments were asking if the pencils were wax or oil, or if I said they were wax, have the comments claimed the pencil to be oil.
The Derwent Artist core is perhaps the hardest core of all colored pencils I have personally tested, turned out the core is so hard due to the type of wax used and there is also oil in the ingredient. After about three years into reviewing pencils I stopped talking about wax and oil, I felt it was lazy of me and so I describe the core if it is soft or hard and how it layers and blends.
excelent comment and thank you as always for your comment and support

I love my Coloursoft. When the Chromaflow came out I was tempted but decided after trying them out in my local store that I preferred the softer lead of the Coloursoft. It's a personal preference. And, I really don't need another set of pencil crayons. I started out many years ago with Faber Castell but gradually found I like Derwent for some projects. Basically, they're all great quality pencils.

I am lucky to have both 72 sets. I like the thicker barrel of the colorsoft as its easier to hold with my hand issues but I prefer the chromaflow as they work in all my adult coloring books no matter how smooth the paper is where the colorsoft is picky which paper in coloring books It will lay down on nicely.. so Chromaflow is the winner for me. Won't buy the 150 set unless the 50 become available open stock but would consider upgrading to the 100 set when budget allows.
Thanks for all you do 😊

@nwaltz59 Colour with Claire has a free video here on RUclips that talks about how Derwent is going to bring out the extra 50 colors of the Chromaflows for sale open stock in the UK and the USA in the future. She plus states that Cult Pens website is going to sell a separate set of 78 Chromaflows you can buy if you already own the 72 set of the Chromaflows so that you don't have to buy the 150 set of the Chromaflows if you don't want to.

Thank you for this comparison. I have a few Coloursofts. I can't afford buying the whole tin right now. I'd also like to test the Chromaflow. Unfortunately they no longer carry Derwent pencils in our local art shop and I cannot justify buying online with the added shipping cost. I can buy Polychromos instead so I might collect those, but I'm sill on the fence about buying individual pencils or sets. I find it hard to locate the pencils I need if I just keep them in a random box. So, at the moment I took a break from buying art supplies in order to use more of what I have and learn what I actually like and use instead of what is trending.

Thank you for this comparison. It's very interesting. I have Coloursoft pencils and I really like them. I had bought the 72 set of Chromaflow and i had to sell them second hand as I really didn't like the quality of the wood and the thin barrel. A lot of the pencils had a broken core and the wood didn't sharpen well at all. I was really disappointed. However the Coloursoft pencils sharpen really well and the wood is much better quality, personally.

She also mentioned that the Cult Pens website is now selling a separate 78 set of the Chromaflows for those who already own the 150 set of the Chromaflows and just want the extra colors to have 150 colors without having to buy the 150 set of the Chromaflows.😊

Harry, thank you for this cimprehensive video. I agree about the Chromaflow being a little harder or as I like to put it, firmer. It seems to combine the advantages of a soft pencil with the control ability of a harder one, wntirely without compromising on vibrance or opacity. Interestingly, Lachri wasn't fond at all of the Coloursoft because she found them difficult to layer.

Hullo Harry, I am so appreciative of your efforts to keep us informed of pencils and related technology, thank you. I am not considering a change in my pencil brands just now, yet I do enjoy watching your videos. I would like to offer a tip? I have used several different kinds of brushes over the years when blending pencils. I use water most often but I have used Zest it and other pencil blenders and I have found that the best brushes to use are “scrubber” brushes and I like the shorter handled ones. I wholeheartedly recommend the Silver scrubber 1/2 stencil tip brush and the angle tip brushes are 2 I always have on hand! If you want a more affordable price the Creative Mark brand also has a scrubber line of brushes. I am sure any brush will work out, but please take care not to use your best brushes as they will fall apart quite quickly! Thank you for sharing all of your ideas and expertise with us.

thank you for the comparison! I have a 36 Coloursoft set and about 20 Chromaflows bought open stock, so I couldn't compare colours side by side and I was curious if there was a big difference in the drawing experience when drawing with proper layering techniques and such - I mostly take my Chromaflows outside for urban sketching and my sketches don't take long so the techniques are different too. I can fit more Chromaflows in my pencil case, but I felt like they were very similar other than the colour selection and thickness.
I do feel like the Chromaflows go down on paper a bit smoother when drawing with a heavier hand (happens a lot with the way I sketch) and I had some problems with specks of different pigments in lighter Coloursoft shades, but my set is about 10 years old, I hope that's not a problem people have anymore ;)

I bought the Derwent Colorsoft portrait set a couple of years ago, and I can relate to the “claggy-ness” that you describe. I was so excited to find this portrait set at a more affordable price than the Caran d’Ache set, but found that the face ended up uneven and really claggy in the final layers, kind of ruining my work. It has since been in my drawer, and I don’t use it anymore. I love my Polychromos, where I can layer as much as I want 😊. So I would guess that Chromaflow would suit me better. I am so fascinated to read comments here of people that have experience with both, and everyone’s preferences. We are so different in how we use them, what paper we use that there is a market for both of these. Thank you so much for this video! This is so valuable on so many levels ❤

I have a small set of Derwent CF pencils. They are nice to use but the small barrel bothers me. I’m not a coloring pencil expert but I prefer OMS rather than blender pencils. OMS is easier on my hand and I get better results. Thank you for this comparison video. I’m very curious about the CS pencils. I might have to try them out!

From both of these I've got the 72 set. I prefer the Coloursoft slightly more because of it's softness and the textures it creates when a paper with some tooth is being used. From my experience I get more layers with the Coloursoft, but that may well be down to the paper and techniques I use. They're close.
I've beem tempted to buy the new colors for the Chromaflow, but for me 72 is a sweet spot already. Not being able to expand the set 72 set to the full 150 set is also not helping to make up my mind. If they would have released new colors for Coloursoft I would have been really tempted.
There's on colored pencil from Derwent I like even better than these 2 sets and that's the Derwent Drawing Pencil. Unfortunately it has only 24 colors, if that ever gets more colors it will be a no brainer for me.

I like them both, and use them in tandem or separately. I think the Chromaflow is easier to use for plain old coloring books. I have open stock Coloursoft that works better than just about any pencil brand adding onto watercolor, in a more serious art form. They go together well in one piece, too. I do wish the price was less in the USA, although it’s also apparent that the Coloursoft seems more high end in character. But I remember when Coloursoft was more reasonable in price not too many years ago.
Once I had them, I liked them better the more I took a little time to experiment and learn how to use them, esp. with their unique textures; it takes awhile before judgment should be made. I own other top and medium priced brands of pencils, too. Use them all. The smaller barrel of Chromaflow doesn’t matter to me as much as a good color quality and selection, and I hate overly waxy pencils. I’m OK with harder, layering pencils. These pencils are very nice in softness and colors, although it drives me nuts that Derwent didn’t put a solid rosy red in the first set. Brownish Strawberry red just doesn’t cut it in a small set, even though it’s a decent color in itself.
I admire Derwent for their inventiveness, but I hope they figure out the quality/price ratio a little better for some of their pencil types. Perhaps Chromaflow is an attempt to offer a lower-priced pencil, what with the smaller barrel and cheaper wood, but it’s still quite expensive in the US. I’d buy a bigger set if I knew the quality/price ratio was a little higher. Even with the occasional wood split, they’re far better made than Prismacolor. It’s great to support pencils made in Great Britain, also.
I also love the Inktense pan paint sets, and am intrigued by Derwent’s new watercolor set. The Inktense cases are great because paint doesn’t bead up, even though it’s plastic. The paint is really fun to use too.

As always you produce a thorough and detailed analysis with a thought provoking ending, thanks Harry for your always detailed and interesting analysis I have both pencils I got the 150 Chromoflow recently and love them I had bought the other two sets before so have a few spares already. I got the Derwent Coloursoft a few years ago and also the Procolour they are a little bit harder pencils but I keep both sets in the one case. I have all of the Derwent pencils so far and agree I think they are a company that produces great pencils. I have Prismacolor also but hate the lack of control they have, split barrels and breakage, the colours and softness are good but their quality control has really nosedived since being made in Mexico. Thanks again and keep up the great work you are doing!

And you can definitely make lovely art with both. I got the 72 set of Chromaflow and im very happy with them. I do think they are slightly better quality.

Many thanks Harry, I love and respect your reviews. They are so considered and thoughtful. My views on this, love both pencils. I find the Chromaflow being a finer core and slightly harder, shine where I need a bit of detail or precision in a tight spot (in colouring books). In saying that, the coloursoft as a palette pair wonderfully with the pro-colour (only a couple of duplicate colours) and provide a wonderful 140 ish colour palette. Something to consider if you prefer the thicker core and barrel. I also prefer the Derwent colour palette to Prismacolor. The few different choices between brands do make a difference. Also….. I must have ALL the pencils, it is a collection not an addiction. Funnily I keep gravitating back to Derwent. My 36 year old Derwent Artist set has only been unseated as my favourite by the Lightfast.
