I know this is an older video but would you still recommend Lifepac? I keep reading negative reviews even though to me it looks very organized and thorough.
We have 9 kids and we are still using Lifepacs for homeschooling. I have two graduated from college now and two more in college…. All homeschooled using Lifepac, Horizon and some Monarch electives in High School. Yes, I would still recommend. We are a very structured and academic family, so I really like the way everything is laid out. The high school grades are well advanced compared to public school, as my two older kids took homeschool biology and then tried public school biology and decided that they wanted to continue with homeschooling because the education was better. (Nothing against public school.) Of course we love that God is incorporated throughout and that is a foundation must for our family. I am not sure where negativity is coming from, but I would say that there are just different approaches for different people.

Thanks for such a thorough review! I've been researching and looking for a better history/social studies program for my 2nd grader. I think this will work perfectly. I had been used 180 days of Social Studies and it didn't seem like it really taught.. just skipped around a lot.

I was wondering for a ASD child that levels learning vary , does this curriculum allow grade levels to be mixed? My son is lower level in language art verse math. He’s a higher level.

I am so glad you got use out of the review! Our family does a traditional 5 day school week. Time and length of schooling depends on your circumstances, which is a benefit of homeschooling. For us, we incorporate electives which adds to our school day and because we have multiple children homeschooling, overall that adds time to our school day as I work with each child. If you have never homeschooled before, I would say evaluate the needs of your child and the needs of your family. Create a goal/plan and then adjust as needed. (Also be mindful of the laws in your state. Some require a certain amount of time.) God bless you on your journey!
Have you done the ACE paces kind if similar? The only thing with ACE isa lot of daily work I was looking for something that was broken down into lessons.
I have not done the ACE curriculum. The teachers guide are really good about giving instructions on how to teach materials, as well as suggests additional projects and readings, but they are not going to say specifically how fast you have to cover them. That would still be up to the homeschool teacher. The younger the grades, the more specific the teachers guides are about what to say and how to teach. As our children progress through grades, I start at the beginning of the school year by planning time for each subject and number of pages needed to be covered to reach our end of the year goal. That keeps us on track throughout the year. I hope this helps!
Not sure what you mean about US…they teach mostly feet and inches in early years but as the grades move up they teach the metric system especially in science.
I have found an occasional error, but that has been few and far between. They may have miss numbered a section, or repeated a sentence, but it certainly is rare. As far as being outdated, the only thing I can say is that history is current to the Obama presidency, which I feel is great. And in the kids books they have updated the animations to include cell phones and things, more modern like…but they still talk about dictionaries and encyclopedias - I have no problems with this at all. These are useful activities to teach children how to research information and alphabetize. When we google the meaning of a word, we don’t need the guide words on the pages of a dictionary, but we still need the useful skill of knowing where a word would fall in the alphabet. Hello! There are no videos for this curriculum. It is completely self-paced by the parent. If you are looking for more of a video type format, you may want to consider AOP’s Switched-On-School House which is computer based. It is the same curriculum, but it is solely on the computer. But, it only begins with the 3rd grade. As the parent, you can plan out your child’s schedule for the year and it will tell the child what to do everyday and keep track of grades as well. We use this format for electives, such as Elementary Spanish and French. There is one more platform offered by AOP as well which is called Monarch, it is also basically the same thing but is internet based instead of being installed on your home computer. You can access the platform from a login screen from any computer that can access the internet. I hope this helps!!! The instruction in the books is so well written, it is very easy to follow.
The set up would be specific for each family. For our family, I take the number of weeks in the school year (minus a few weeks for review for end of the year testing) and divide that time by 10, as there are ten books in each subject. So for example, if I know to stay on track to finish all the books for the school year I need to complete a LifePac every 2 weeks (ten school days), then I take the total number of pages in that particular LifePac and divide by 10. If my LifePac math has 48 pages in it, I round up to 50 and tell my kids we need a goal of completing 5 math pages per day for that LifePac. You also may want to read over the teacher’s manual in advance, look for any experiments or reports that could potentially expand that time and consider that as well. It also depends on the pace of your children, so if I find that my kids are getting frustrated, or maybe zipping through a subject I may want to adjust my timeline. It is a whole lot easier to start out a little more aggressive in the planning in the beginning, and then relax if needed, then it would be to start lax and then try to cram information in at the end. I don’t know about missing material and information, if you have any specific questions I would be more than happy to try to help!

I love questions! My kids have used this curriculum all the way through graduation from high school and I have two children almost ready to graduate from college, one as an Engineer and one as a Chemist. The ages of my kids are 19, 17, twin 12 year olds, 7, 5, 4 and 2. We have a total of 8 children and we homeschool all of them. I use Horizon’s for pre-school, health and physical education. We have also substituted for is Music Theory, Typing and Latin. AOP does not offer Latin as a language option. But, I found a curriculum that I absolutely love that is Christian as well. I have found that the younger grades from AOP are right in line with end of year testing, but high school subjects are by far advanced and superior to standard high school curriculums. I can attest to that personally, as I have compared them side by side. As the children get older, I use AOP’s switched on school house electives to incorporate computer usage. I hope this helps!!!

That is a great question. We have been through many years of the Lifepacs and as far as I can tell, mostly it is updated graphics and layout, rather than change in lessons. Many of my old teachers’ guides still provide the same answers that line up with the same pages. Very rarely I come across a new or different question. Slowly over time I have been updating the teachers’ guide to save money...we have 8 kids :). Two of which are now in college and the high school Lifepacs were right in line with everything they needed to know to prepare for college. I hope this helps.

Homeschooling is wonderful because it allows us to teach our children according to their needs. These have not overwhelmed my children, but I may choose to break up some of the assignments so that a child that maybe is losing focus for the day in a math page that is getting long can start fresh the next day…. The freedom is great! It is always up to you how you teach the material. The boxed curriculums are great for a standard.
Yes for sure! The LifePac series is not part of their online curriculum. It is just like ordering books online. You can either order as a set, or individual books. I hope this helps :)!
Spelling is included in the main Language Arts subject and has really good implementation. As part of their daily work they write and use the words in different ways and then after each LifePac they take a test for that booklet. The teacher’s guide even gives you sentences to read aloud as part of the spelling tests. For reading, In the younger grades, they offer reader books to go along with the curriculum. It has sight words in it and stories that follow along with the curriculum. In the beginning you will read to the child and ask questions for comprehension, and then the child will learn to recognize common words. I would also suggest for young ones, finding a phonics book reading set that gradually progresses. But you don’t have to. There are lots of opportunities to read and learn reading patterns in the standard Language Arts curriculum.
The Lifepacs are the “textbook” intermixed with questions, quizzes and tests. This is one of the main reasons I love this curriculum. There is a bible subject for each grade beginning in first grade. We study the Bible as a family every morning before school starts, so I have not opted for this as a school subject for my kids. There is certainly biblical principles throughout the core learning subjects. I have ordered the Foundations and Principles of Christian Living elective for High School and it was excellent! My high schoolers really enjoyed it. I hope this helped to answer your questions!

That is a great question! The school day for the elementary kids is from 8am to 3pm with a break for lunch and break at 12. So they get 6 hours of school time with an hour break, and this is 5 days a week. Preschool is 2 hours per day 5 days a week and kindergarten is 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.
That is a really good question! Keep in mind all children are different, but I usually allow for at least 4 hours of instruction time for core subjects a day. As you work through each daily lesson you will quickly see what your child may be quicker at completing, or may need some extra time :). But, that is a good rule of thumb.
If you visit the Alpha and Omega Publication website, you would want to look into Switched on School House, which is a computer based program...Or Monarch, which is an online program. It is all the same curriculum, just different platforms. For the younger grades that are very writing intensive to train their little fingers, I am not sure how that would workout but we definitely use the Switched on School House for our electives for the older grades and my kids love it. All grading standards and assignments are something you plan through the teacher’s portal and the system grades and tracks the progress of the child. I hope this helps!

There are 10 books per subject for grades 1-12. The first book is usually a review of the previous year and the last book is usually a review of everything that was covered during that subject year. It is a great reinforcement.
We do Bible study as a family from the Bible in the mornings, so I hadn’t in years past, but this year I ordered the Bible curriculum for my 8th grade, 6th grade, 4th grade and 2nd graders and it looks to be just as thoughtful and well laid out.
I wish this wasn't christian! I'm struggling to find a curriculum that my 10 year old can use for LA. We are NOT religious at all. This will be her first year homeschooling. We are looking for an open and go type work book. It can have some god stuff in it. Any ideas??
This curriculum presents all subjects with the foundation of God as the creator and center of all things. This matches the foundation and principles of our family and so I have not tried to find any other type curriculum. You will find Christian principles in the Alpha and Omega books all the way through high school subjects. I am not familiar with any world-view type curriculums. I don’t think I can be of much help there. But you are correct, it makes it very convenient for the parent to make sure their child gets all the needed educational teachings for each grade. In the homeschool world, we call these boxed curriculums.

I understand completely where you are coming from. A very common question is that if God is so loving and all powerful, how could he let bad things happen. I myself have experienced very painful and horrible experiences. God is a revelation, and he will show himself to those who seek Him with their whole heart. If you have something inside you that is longing, or wanting a comforter and healing from the brokenness, Christ is longing to comfort you and heal you from your experiences. It was through deception and disbelief of God’s word, that the devil has been able to enter the world and create horrible acts through sin. God has given us a choice and wants to express His attribute of Savior in our lives. I can’t explain why bad things happen, but I do know a living God who performs acts of supernatural miracles and gives his peace, protection and love to His children. This is not because anyone has told me, but because I have had an experience myself with Him. I am going to pray that if you desire to see Him, He will touch you. Don’t be fooled, the life of a Christian is not a life free from trials and suffering, but the difference is that you have God on your side! Now He is there to help and you can call on His name and He will hear you and answer and give you protection.

How many hours a day do you "school" and how many days a week?
That is a great question! The school day for the elementary kids is from 8am to 3pm with a break for lunch and break at 12. So they get 6 hours of school time with an hour break, and this is 5 days a week. Preschool is 2 hours per day 5 days a week and kindergarten is 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.
By break, I mean some sort of recess or free play time.

That is a really good question! Keep in mind all children are different, but I usually allow for at least 4 hours of instruction time for core subjects a day. As you work through each daily lesson you will quickly see what your child may be quicker at completing, or may need some extra time :). But, that is a good rule of thumb.
I like what I see but it seems very teacher intensive is there anything online?
If you visit the Alpha and Omega Publication website, you would want to look into Switched on School House, which is a computer based program...Or Monarch, which is an online program. It is all the same curriculum, just different platforms. For the younger grades that are very writing intensive to train their little fingers, I am not sure how that would workout but we definitely use the Switched on School House for our electives for the older grades and my kids love it. All grading standards and assignments are something you plan through the teacher’s portal and the system grades and tracks the progress of the child. I hope this helps!

There are 10 books per subject for grades 1-12. The first book is usually a review of the previous year and the last book is usually a review of everything that was covered during that subject year. It is a great reinforcement.

Yes. But, I start them in a
Homeschool preschool program (Horizons) before Kindergarten at 3. So it is a natural progression.

Do you do the bible
We do Bible study as a family from the Bible in the mornings, so I hadn’t in years past, but this year I ordered the Bible curriculum for my 8th grade, 6th grade, 4th grade and 2nd graders and it looks to be just as thoughtful and well laid out.
I wish this wasn't christian! I'm struggling to find a curriculum that my 10 year old can use for LA. We are NOT religious at all. This will be her first year homeschooling. We are looking for an open and go type work book. It can have some god stuff in it. Any ideas??
This curriculum presents all subjects with the foundation of God as the creator and center of all things. This matches the foundation and principles of our family and so I have not tried to find any other type curriculum. You will find Christian principles in the Alpha and Omega books all the way through high school subjects. I am not familiar with any world-view type curriculums. I don’t think I can be of much help there. But you are correct, it makes it very convenient for the parent to make sure their child gets all the needed educational teachings for each grade. In the homeschool world, we call these boxed curriculums.

I understand completely where you are coming from. A very common question is that if God is so loving and all powerful, how could he let bad things happen. I myself have experienced very painful and horrible experiences. God is a revelation, and he will show himself to those who seek Him with their whole heart. If you have something inside you that is longing, or wanting a comforter and healing from the brokenness, Christ is longing to comfort you and heal you from your experiences. It was through deception and disbelief of God’s word, that the devil has been able to enter the world and create horrible acts through sin. God has given us a choice and wants to express His attribute of Savior in our lives. I can’t explain why bad things happen, but I do know a living God who performs acts of supernatural miracles and gives his peace, protection and love to His children. This is not because anyone has told me, but because I have had an experience myself with Him. I am going to pray that if you desire to see Him, He will touch you. Don’t be fooled, the life of a Christian is not a life free from trials and suffering, but the difference is that you have God on your side! Now He is there to help and you can call on His name and He will hear you and answer and give you protection.

I don’t know of any curriculum teaching cursive that young. Maybe you could add in a cursive curriculum in addition to the regular alphabet.
