    I've been chasing his tone since I picked up a guitar and man, the trick is how his tones can be so meaty/chunky but still retain clarity almost like there is no distortion at all. Absolutely phenomenal.

      Depends on the album, but I know Page didn't use much gain or distortion for the early LP albums. BUT, he did crank his amps.

    • @Mang213
      @Mang213 8 месяцев назад

      That's the trick. You found it without recognizing it. He barely used much gain or distortion and relied heavily on the tone of his guitar through an amp that has the volume cranked up.

    I think Jimmy Page was the most creative guitarist of the 70s if not the most creative riff-master of all time. This example maybe a bit clichéd but I have pretty much heard every singe bootleg of Stairway there is on RUclips and I can definitely attest to the fact that he's universally known for is that aside from the signature riffs, I have literally never seen the man improvise on the solo in the same way as before. I can never understand enough that just how gifted this man musically really was. Having been listening to so many guitar players play their songs for years, I strive to hear something that imaginably seems impossible now to play differently, POSSIBLE and much to my great astonishment, Jimmy for one has always delivered on that wish.
    I mean I solo over the song in my mind all the time and then when I come here and hear him play, I ask myself "just how in the world does he think of those gorgeous licks so damn quickly?" because I've been playing it in my mind again and again from days to months to years now but could never come up with something so magical. His brain clearly bred music so to speak.

      Exactly what I think whenever I put on a live Zeppelin album. I can definitely however tell that properly knowing the pentatonic and other respective scales makes soloing easier than what you may have come to believe so far. Then again you do have have to think your way into pressing those areas on the fretboard to get the desired magic out. Page knew his way around the fretboard better than anybody else which is even more amazing considering the fact that he never actually practiced guitar in the traditional method.

      S-AG-E - yes, Page is the greatest riff and song writer ever. Think of HOW MANY awesome riffs Page has written!! Many tonal variations on his guitar tones, not to mention he pioneered recording also, got Bonhams giant drum tones onto tape and wrote a ton of the lyrics! Page is hands down the greatest EVER!! Nobody comes close!

    Based on a really old interview Page plugged into old Marshall 100 watt heads, that were modified for higher wattage. His used Herco Flex 75 heavy gauge pics and Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings, .008 for the high E. Page set his live rig amp settings on his Marshall Plexi as follows:
    Presence = 10
    Bass = 9
    Mids = 3
    Treble = 5
    Volume I = 6
    Volume II = 6
    Hope this helps.

      Most likely it was a tele. The on-stage used guitars more times than not have no relation to the studio guitar. Stage is about the look and presence but artists are in no way obligated to record with any particular instrument. You'll never see Metallica play teles on stage but they too use on many of their records. There's even videos if you look at them recording "Ronnie" for example.

      aman chandra hmmm I'm not sure cuz they are correct, of course high watt amps are going to have that loud live punch but honestly I have some really great, punchy, real sounding plugins. I seriously think he might have just added a tiny pinch too much treble and he coulda used a tiny pinch more of mid. And then maybe used an equalizer along with the amp plug in to boost the bass frequencies a bit. And the reverb would have carried the bass frequencies to a good point. Take into account that RUclips streaming might not sound as good as his home studio speakers as well.

    I think most of the gear big musicians had back then was modified by themselves or tone nerd friends. This is why you'll never be able to match the tones of the greats. They didn't just chain pedals together and dial them in. They got into the guts of their guitars and amps and made something new.

    This is cool. I agree that there's little point attempting to emulate others, but Jimmy's SRTS tone is just incredible! I've been searching for that tone for the longest time, and I think you came close with the match to The Ocean from that concert. I'd love to see what you'd do with finding the SRTS tone from songs like Dazed and Confused. The one thing you seemed to miss was his use of the ECHOPLEX! That added the tight little delay and also the preamp brought a warmth to the tone that is crucial.

      A lot of that tone comes from the '59 les paul, trust me. Especially songs like Since I've Been Lovin' You from that concert, during the parts where he turns his volume down for quieter riffs. Go watch a video and listen to a '59 LP, it sounds exactly the same.

    A debate has raged for many years on what electric guitars were used on the first album.
    It’s hard for people to believe, but I just used my Fender Telecaster for the entire album, except for one track. Somebody was trying to sell me a Gibson Flying V at the time. I don’t what made them think I could afford it, because I clearly couldn’t, but I asked them if I could just try it out. I brought it into Olympic and used it on “You Shook Me.” With those big humbuckers, it was so powerful you can hear it breaking up the amp in the middle of the song. I could’ve tidied it up, but I really liked hearing the amp really struggle to get the sound out. It’s really fighting through the electronics to get out of that speaker. I’m not sure what happened to the guitar. It might’ve found its way to Keith Richards or something, but I really don’t know.

    I've watched most of Jimmy's interviews, read most of his books, he had a collection of 50 different small amplifiers in the early days, he actually cannot remember what gear was used. he knows what gear and pedals he likes, and like us he's always rotating new gear in and out, what worked yesterday is gone and forgotten, he generally remembers what is used on each song. the stories of the recording sessions are insane drug and alcohol fueled sessions, they borrow each other's gear, no ones worrying or remembering what the gear was used. small low watt amps were used in the studio in the early days, if you asked Jimmy page to re-create Jimmy page's tone today, he could not do it either.
    later albums, after they are extremely successful they start keeping track of how the music was made. by the way what settings did you use on that RUclips video 5 years ago, remember.?

    59 les Paul with an overwound, Alnico II PAF pickup in the neck and a standard t-top in the bridge. Neck pu is slightly hotter than the bridge. His tone gets a slight boost and tonal change by from running into an echoplex as the preamp tubes are providing this even when the delay is not actively being used. This goes into a Marshall plexi that has been modded with KT88 tubes for more clean head room and some tightening of the lower and lower mid range frequencies. Amp settings: treble usually at 8-10, mid 0-4, bass 0-4, presence around 7 and volume/gain around halfway. There ya go folks.

    Nice demo. I've almost always played real amps live, but I have used modelers for almost all my recordings of electric guitar and bass since about 2000. First and foremost, they can sound good if you know what you're doing. Without that, there's no point. But also, as someone who made his living by the hour, the flexibility to change sounds, effects, etc. without re-tracking is priceless.

He was answering a audience member's question about what his favorite amp was...he didnt want to get into any details and claimed a fuzzy memory...but said that Supro was probably it.

He has a pedal Marshall sound through a music man amp . He got the mod from Pages guitar tech in the early 70s . I ordered a pair and there awesome. All three settings , he shows what pickup setting he’s using for each song . Watch his Demo on you tube . And it’s affordable and not a one trick pony . You did good on this video . I Play Guitar since 30 Years ..and Jimmy Page /Led Zeppelin i know Tons of Stuff ..and i go into the details of Pagey´s Style ..He is my Nr 1 because in his songs have ALWAYS something Special..
    And his RocK n Roll Influence beneath the Typical Blues scale ..Later the more progressive Stuff (Achilles last Stand" "No Quarter" etc..
    All in all i have to say Page was the most versatile and greatest Guitarist of that Golden era
    I mean ..."It´s been a long time since i+ve Rock n Roll ...Its been a long time since i´ve did that stroll ...Let me get it back l et me get itback let me get it baaack"This Music is so PERFECT
    The Solo of "Rock n Roll" is so OVERDRIVEN Cool (i don´t find the right words )
    And .. i mean some may say Overplayed ..but "Stairway to Heaven" is a ANTHEM ..this song which starts with a Music like from Centurys ago and then growth to a 20th Century PEARL ...
    Damm .. i say THIS is the best song of All Times ...the Beginning of the drums . then Jonesy´s Tastful 7ender rhoades Piano + the PHANTASTIC Guitars and Plants UNIQUE Voice (there will be NEVER again Such a great voice like Plant with the early LED ZEP) The Guitar Solo ..then the Powerchord riffs with his Marshall Plexi ...This is SUCH a Perfect Song ..could you imagine that they first don´t wanthis on Led Zep IV ??
    Led Zep I (the first Record) was the Big Bang of Hard Rock (The Second Record with "Heartbreaker Omg too )
    I think you can hear it that i am a Fan :-D,

    Before Zep while he was a studio musician he used a telecasters as well. That telecaster (b-bender i think) also made it into the recording studio while with Led Zeppelin he even mentions not being able to nail the stairway solo with the Less Paul so he plugged in the tele and wrapped up the solo in two takes. Kashmir was a Danelectro and I believe he had several of them in the studio as well.

  • @YouSpamTard

    You can't even buy the tone if you had the money. The tone is lost and gone forever because the old Celestions speakers are gone and lost. It also has to do with other things such as amplifier tubes from back then which are also non existent. The analog magnetic tape is not used anymore and the mixing consoles are gone as well. None of this stuff can be made again and certainly not in any sort of digital way. The real secret of it all was the Celestion speakers made in the 60's. If you ain't got that, you can not make the tone. The reason is, you could distort the heck out of a signal using tube amps and it would never clip (square wave) the signal, and the Celestions would cut out any mid to high frequency noise. If you think about it, its the lack of hi-fidelity of it all that made it all sound so good. As an interesting fact, Celestion speakers were sold for PA intercom systems for boats and ships, and Marshal just kind of by using what was available in England put them into the cabs. I bet you even Page can't make the tone he used to be able to make anymore. I wonder what he has saved from the old equipment because I have not heard a good tone from him in at least some 30 or 40 years. It was all just a happy accident they had the equipment available. Good luck.

That's what makes slash's guitar playing unique and the chromatic notes in his blues improvisations.

  • @jamesalvinlee9004
    @jamesalvinlee9004 4 года назад

    The guitar choice is easy depending on what number and whether you are trying to emulate studio or live tone. You’re looking at either a Les Paul, SG double neck or Tele in many cases. And if you’re specifically looking for that TSRTS Les Paul tone, you will need: 4 wire PAF’s, overwound bridge, a “normal” wound neck, and super circuit wiring scheme are must haves on board the Les Paul. The phase switching, along with series/parallel switching was featured heavily on those recordings. Example: listen to the opening lick of Over The Hills. Neck pup selected, parallel switch, low pup volume, and scooped pup tone. It also would help to have a Les Paul that is from the early 90’s or older. My ‘’89 Heritage Pre-Historic Les Paul does the job for me with the setup I just laid out. This is key because of how mahogany ages, and how that aging affects the guitars tone. As far as the amp goes: Has to be a tube driven Marshall. I specifically use the JVM410H. Have to scoop the presence, mid and bass. Dial back the treble a touch. Definitely a need a bit of the amps onboard reverb. Effects are fuzz box, wah peddle, phaser, chorus and tape echo (each depending on which number being played) and that’s how I’ve achieved that very specific tone. It’s not exactly easy to achieve, but it can be done with the right rig and the patience to toggle all the controls just right.

    First album was a Tele and a Supro amp along with a wah and an echoplex. He did a lot of open tuning and a combination of close and distance amp miking.

    I think you were spot on. I don't see how you could have been better. Sounded perfect.

    Should of used a Tone Bender. The tone was very close though. Maybe using a les Paul or a Tele with a Supro amp and then plug in the Tone Bender or say a Blue Box for “ Fool in the Rain “ or a Vox Wah for Whole Lotta Love. I guess this was a product plug for UA which could be why you didn’t use all the actual gear he was known to use.

    I had a les Paul studio and a cheap line 6 spider and I loved jimmy page so much he was the the reason I started playing and I scoured the internet and found settings that sounded pretty good but this was atleast 10 years ago
