All the imams agreed on the soundness of the ahadith which forbid singing and musical instruments, apart from Abu Hamid al-Ghazzali, but they did not have knowledge of hadith. Shaykh al-Albani (رحمه الله) explained where Ibn Hazam went wrong, and Ibn Hazam himself said that if any of (these ahadith) were sahih, he would follow that. Now that we have proof that these reports are sahih their stances on this issue are invalid. [1] 1.Prohibition of music from the Qur’ān First verse from the Qur’ān: “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (لَهْوَ ٱلْحَدِيثِ) to mislead (men) from the path of Allah” [Luqman 31:6] According to Ibn ‘Abas رضي الله عنه idle talk (لَهْوَ ٱلْحَدِيثِ) means “singing”. [2] You may ask why is his opinion correct? First of all, he is a sahabi and they are more knowledgeable and better than the rest of the Ummah. Second of all, the prophet ﷺ made a du’a so that Ibn ‘Abbas will receive knowledge of the deen and ‘knowledge of tafseer’. [3] Even though the tafseer of Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه suffices (and is the most correct) let’s take a look at the tafseer from other scholars; Al-Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله) said: “This ayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). [4] Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said: “The interpretation of the Sahabah and Tabi'in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. …” [5] Second verse from the Qur’ān: “[Allah said to Iblis:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allah's disobedience)…” [al-Isra 17:64] Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said: “… Everyone who speaks in any way that is not obedient to Allah, everyone who blows into a flute or other woodwind instrument, or who plays any haram kind of drum, this is the voice of the Shaytan. - Everyone who walks to commit some act of disobedience towards Allah is part of his [the Shaytan’s] infantry, and anyone who rides to commit sin is part of his cavalry. - This is the view of the Salaf, as Ibn ‘Abi Hatim narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas: his infantry is everyone who walks to disobey Allah.” [6] Third verse from the Qur’ān: “Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Quran)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” [al-Najm 53:59-61] Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه said that al-sumud, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” means “singing”. And he said (رضي الله عنه): When they [the kuffar] heard the Quran, they would sing, then this ayah was revealed. Ibn Kathir (رحمه الله) said: “Allah says “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” - Sufyan al-Thawri said, narrating from his father from Ibn 'Abbas: (this means) singing. - This is Yemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana [sing to us]. This was also the view of ‘Ikrimah.” [7] 2.Prohibition of music form reports of the Prophet ﷺ Some Muslims with weak faith often argue: “If listening to music is prohibited in Islam, why was this not clearly mentioned in the Qur’an? We only obey the commandments of the Qur‘an.” This objection is not new, as it has been raised by many apologetic and modernist Muslims over the whole course of Islamic history, Surah Luqman, verse 6, provides a clear proof of the prohibition of music in Islam, … … but we must go to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for further clarification of any commandment of Islam. The Qur‘an is general; it does not go into the fine details of the various commandments but directs us to follow Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for guidance. The Qur’an tells us clearly: “And whatever the Messenger has given you take, and whatever he has forbidden you refrain from” (Al-Qur’ān, 59:7) First hadith: Saheeh al Bukhari, the most authentic book of Hadith. further confirms the unlawfulness of music and singing with this hadith, in which the Prophet ﷺ said: The Messenger of Allah sani صَلَّى اللهُ عَليهِ وسَلمُ "Among my ummah there will be people who will regard as permissible adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments.. Sahih al-Bukhari 5590 Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah رحمه الله said: “This hadith indicates that ma’azif are haram, and ma’azif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all such instruments.” [8] Detailed analysis of the Arabic word ‘ma‘azif’ (الْمَعَازِفَ) shows beyond any shadow of a doubt that it refers to musical instruments, the sounds of those musical instruments and singing with the accompaniment of instruments. Imam Qurtubi narrates that al-Jowhari writes about three words with the same Arabic root, asserting that ma‘azif signifies musical instruments, al-‘azif indicates one who sings, and the ‘azf of the wind is its voice. Closer analysis of the wordings of this hadith establishes the prohibition of music for the following reasons: The word 'seek to make lawful' () shows that music is not permissible because one can only seek to make lawful that which is not allowed. If music was not prohibited, then it would not have been brought within the same context as fornication and wine drinking. When we look at these four items, another element appear. They are not only haram but are mentioned with phrases such as 'an immorality and is evil as a way' (Qur'an 17: 32), 'those will have a humiliating punishment' (Qur'an 31: 6), and 'defilement from the work of Satan' (Qur'an 5: 90). Therefore, it can be concluded that these sins are not minor sins. After all, what can be assumed about the grouping of the four together in this hadith? It shows, at the very least, that enjoying and listening to music is not a minor sin. The Arabic word yastahilloona means, 'they will seek to make lawful! This means that those people will not only commit sin but they will also consider it to be permissible in religion. This is the worst type of rebellion against religion, and it results in an increase in the intensity of the sin committed. V. If someone claims that music is only unlawful when it is in combination with alcohol, adultery and silk, this is a false claim. The reason is that if this were the case, then why would music be the only exception? The same could also be claimed for adultery, alcohol and silk, so one could then make the case that alcohol or adultery is also permissible unless it is found in combination with the other things. Second hadith: .said, may God bless him and grant him peace, The Messenger of God "People among my nation will drink wine. calling it by another name and musical instruments will be played for them and singing girls (will sing for them). Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up. and will turn them into monkeys and pigs." Sunan Ibn Majah 4020 Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani Third hadith: The prophet ﷺ said: “Verily, Allah prohibited wine, gambling and the kuba, and every intoxicant is prohibited.” Sufyan رحمه الله said: “I asked the narrator, ‘Ali ibn Badheemah: What is the kuba? He answered: It is the drum.” [9] There are many more narrations of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding prohibition of musical instruments and unlawful singing. Only a few have been mentioned here. Imam lbn Hajar al Haythami (died 974 AH/1567 CE) gathered all these hadiths, which total approximately forty, in his excellent work, Kaff ar-Ra’a’ ‘an Muharramat al Lahwa was-Sama’ (Prohibiting People from the Forbidden Distractions and Singing), and then concluded: “All of this is explicit and compelling textual evidence that musical instruments of all types are unlawful.” [10] 3.Did the Companions listen to singing? Some people even have the nerve to suggest that the Sahabah and Tabi'in listened to singing, and that they saw nothing wrong with it! Shaykh Al-Fawzan (رحمه الله) said: “We demand them to show us sahih isnads going back to these Sahabah and Tabi'in, proving what they attribute to them. Then he said: Imam Muslim mentioned in his introduction to his Sahih … … that ‘Abd-Allah ibn al-Mubarak said: The isnad is part of religion. Were it not for the isnad, whoever wanted to could say whatever he wanted to.” [11] 4.Agreement Of The Four Madhhabs About Music. Shaykh Al-Albani (رحمه الله) said: "The four madhhabs agree that all musical instruments are haram." [12] And Allah ﷻ knows best.
