I’m a stylist and I am so happy other stylist are finally talking about pricing!! People just thought we charge a lot because we can instead of knowing why 👏🏼👏🏼
Legit obsessed. I’ve barely found you on here and I love how much you educate. This is so long but I loved it so much. So much information. Thank you so much
I’m a stylist and I have such a hard time charging what I SHOULD charge because I ‘feel bad’ ! Which is crazy! I tend to charge by what the outcome ends up being. Which I know is terrible! Ty for being so honest throughout the entire video. I agree with EVERYTHING you said from the start to the finish!
I’m sorry I’m seriously spamming your videos with comments, but I can’t help it and say you are the most transparent hair stylist I’ve seen. I love your selfie style in person/in depth intros and information. I did my sister’s balayage last week just by watching your videos and your toning formulas. Even I couldn’t believe that I did that, my sister was praising me and I kept telling her its all cuz of Kristi😂😂 My sister was so confused and kept asking who’s Kristi??? I said she’s my hair Goddess🥰🥰🥰 I love you and love how you’re humble and positive vibe shines through that screen. I wish so so much more success in life. You’re biggest fan♥️♥️♥️
Why would anyone tell you or comment on here for you not to talk about how much you charge? Girl you talk about whatever you want on your channel! This is such a great channel I'm learning so so much!!! I'm not a hairstylist but I cut, dye and highlight my own hair... thank you! I love hearing and seeing these long videos. Gives me great tips!
I am a retired hairstylist and I think it’s a win win to both the client and the stylists. Get what you are worth! There are a lot of services that are charged by the hour. I would pay big bucks for what I want. You are awesome!!
I think it's crazy when you really think of it, how people will complain about paying for things such as this which a stylist takes hours of manual labor and a lot of other things that go into factor to put into their hair that will do so much for them after their appointment. But yet they'll go out to dinner and spend a hundred something dollars on just one night for dinner and drinks! That's what boggles my mind
Eat are overall haha x) I don't can understand this, too. But i buy things that i don't need or spend money for nothing, buying cheap things and wondering, why it doesn't help. Maybe this is wrong to think but i don't know and I'm change it. But some things don't changes fast. Maybe from earlier, where we was kids. We don't have so much money and i see, that i do things, without reason, because from the childhood :$
As I client, I have no problem with $100/hr. Most important to me is the knowledge and experience of the stylist to help me get the results I’m looking for. During consult I always ask the stylist if my goal is possible. I’m totally amazed at what you can do on color correction. 3rd session two days ago and still a lot of warmth in my hair. But Professionally colored dark brown for years. So yes. It’s a process. My current stylist wants me to wait about 8 weeks before coming back. Just trying to get icy blonde with lowlights so my natural brown and silver gray can grow in. You are the best colorist I’ve seen and I truly appreciate all the discussion you provide. If I wasn’t on the east coast I’d have made an appointment with you. Just amazed at your work!
I'm a brand new Stylist and starting to do a lot more services but am scared to charge since I'm not in a salon and working on my own time. This helped me understand how much work we put into services and that we should be getting paid for it. This will help me be more confident in saying a definite price right off the bat and not feel bad. Thank you for this!
I appreciate your videos, I used to think charging $120 for full highlights was a lot by my hairdresser and I have a lot of hair! But when I thought about it hourly that makes so much more sense and I also kind of feel like my services are so rushed now. Thanks for your perspective, sometimes people are ignorant to all that goes into it like I was! Also you answered my question why balayage always looked too warm on me!
I'm cracking up right now! Right there with you on when your client is early. Yeah that bugs me. I just say, "Your appointment isn't for another 30 minutes. Do you need to run any errands?" lol And thank you so much for the conversation about what we charge clients for big and complicated jobs. I understand that our clients don't always know what we've put into our education to know how to get the look they want, and also at the same time keeping the integrity of their hair. This conversation is important and validating for us because it's also letting people watching this video WHY these services are so pricey. Not everyone can create this look. Not everyone has the know how. I've fixed so many hair colors gone bad by stylists saying they could give them the look cheaper and in a shorter amount of time. And their road to recovery starts with lots of hair repair.
Your so right finally i can relate. I thought i was the only one that felt that way. Your right we have to appreciate ourselves more. Thank you for talking about this thank you thank you
Just a lil tip a phenomenal older color specialist shared with me once that made a difference I never thought it wld.... When using 'water' to drop the volume, try n use distilled water because most tap is a higher level on the alkaline scale which can cause more drying. She wld also sometimes let the lightener just sit 5-10mins before starting saying it drops in strength naturally once mixed. She taught me to go back n mix fresh batches throughout the application process too which also ensures more even results. Jus sharin what I've learned along the way. You're such a hard worker too. Love the passion most of us share!😉
Thank you! I remix often but honestly only do a little water to thin it out, not weaken it. Schwarzkopf tends to swell so much and the water prevents it
I definitely agree with the hourly charge on long services or colour corrections. I charge £60ph and the first 5 bowls of lightener are included but for every bowl after that is £5 but fit every other service I have a set price! LOVE your channel and your work. You are amazing & hilarious❤️
I agree with your pricing concept. Each client is different. They go in with an expectation of what they want and we need to be realistic about hours and cost of time and product. I think that’s honest and fair 💯
I love your channel Kristi! Everything you put your hand to is done with such care and skill. Your work is top of the line and it all turns out so so beautiful. I really thank you so much for taking the time to explain everything of why you do things and how you price is so helpful to us. I love the fact that you just keep it so real and you’re so down to earth and you’re not fake and phoney like some people especially the trolls that are down the bottom of the comment section. I hope you have a great day and keep being you we love you Kristi ❤️
I looovvvvee your morning chat..and I love your hair...people should appreciate the time they wait..that means your not going to rush through my hair...nobody wants their hair artist to rush through their service... ❤️
I am not a stylist but what you do is an art, it requires your exoertise, wisdom, time and money. I think you are undercharging at 100 an hour. Ive seen your videos. You are worth more. Id be happy to pay your rates! ❤❤❤ from Alaska
@@hairbykristijennings6648 Hi Kristi!! I'm doing great!! I hope you are doing good, too!! You are very welcome, Kristi!! I enjoy your videos very much! I look forward to them all the time!! Have a great day, Kristi!! ;)
Oh my god..I so appreciate that you told everything..because I had a same feeling like you when I just start work..and then realize we deserve to charge what we do. I'd asked the other youtuber about price stuff.. but she hesitated to answer. I was so disappointed.. I love you that explain every details.^^
Love your stance on multiple sessions vs blocking out your whole day! I usually tell people “this will take 2-3 sessions” and if they ask why I offer them a hourly rate if they want to spend the $ to book a 6-8 hour appointment.
Kristi,I've done hair for 40 years now, and I never have run on time, and when my clients come in 15/20 minutes early, it make me want to charge double!!!! But when it's even your own parents do it to you, why does it seem worse? My dad has a cane to walk with he's 94 with a head start wherever he goes, never late lol my mom is the late one, she's 85, no cane!! Oh well I guess hopefully on time than not!! Beautiful colors Kristi, you always do beautiful!!!
Gorgeous work! Thank you so much for talking about pricing. You described me to a T with the "afraid to charge more than $250". I get so anxious and feel awful charging more than that, even if I work for 6 hours. I know I'm being ridiculous but it's so difficult. Thank you for being open about what you charge. It helps me be more confident.
Of course! Im glad it helped! Even I still have a hard time but it gets easier setting up the appt with that conversation at the consultation.... that way they know from the start
Be kind to yourself. Stop saying you are a loser. Say positive things to yourself inside your inner voice and out when you are talking on RUclips. You are a great stylist.
Girl, you are brilliant at what you do! such an informative video! keep up the good work. I swear you we're gonna take the girls eye out with that comb at one point thou hahaha xxx
Fellow hairstylist here...my favorite is when you tell a client that you don't feel well and they hit you with "oh you should go home after you get done with my hair" but they have to get their hair done first!
We need more video time about the toning👍 My haidresser just overtoned my bottoms, and not toned enough my top. It looked bad overall. I was able to wash it off, so now I am planning to tone it by myself with Redken 9V+ 9P.
I agree that the discussion of charging was put into your video..I think you should do a separate video just on this topic. It needs to be told and heard by both clients and other stylists as well..
I totally agree with your breakdown on cost on a service that will last all day, totally fair!! Why should us hairstylist short ourselves for an all day service when you can be getting multiple clients in making more money. It should be talked about for sure!!
Your Amazing !! And YOU are worth the price , some stylist ' are Not ... But with your results yas mam !! Worth every penny . Love this video as well you are my GO To .. for my hair and others I do : )
About early clients.. A few years back, I was booked a new blow out client by the front desk. The girl's hair was so thick and it tangled bad after washing. I started to ask the front desk to call my next client just as she walked in 20 minutes early! I ended up running 15 minutes behind. So she waited 35 minutes because she was early. She was so angry and was so awful to me because she had "waited an hour"..... I apologized profusely to her while she kept telling me she could have been doing other things. She was so nasty to me that I had to tell her we were going to need to reschedule because I could tell she was angry with me and didn't feel comfortable. I had never been late with her before and it was only an actual 15 minutes. When I mentioned rescheduling, she changed her tune real quick and chilled out. The next appointment, she walked in 15 minutes late and smirked at me! I'm pretty sure she did that crap on purpose. If any of you knew me, im the least confrontational person and always nice. There was no need for this behavior. The 3rd appointment after that, she no showed. I called, texted, and waited around 40 minutes and told the front desk to reschedule her if she called back. So I left to get supplies. Well, she called and flipped out on the front desk girl threatening to go elsewhere because she thought she was supposed to be there at 12 instead of 11. Ummm, we have multiple texts stating 11, the booking system sends reminders for 11. She realized she was wrong and texted me. I told her we needed to reschedule. She just sends me a "remember that time you were an hour late?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣" with all of these laugh emojis..... oh no she didn't! I set her straight that I was 15 minutes late and she was early. I fired her then and there. People are nuts!
Omg.... reading this gave me so much anxiety! I was literally fuming wanting to go off, I'm so glad this had a happy ending where you kind of told her off! My kind of stylist!
I love and appreciate your videos and your personality! Im binge watching today and wondering how the heck you get all the teasing out? I have struggled with that and its awful when it turns into a tight knot (its happened to me twice now lol). I use number 2 and it helps some and leave ins and oils but still sometimes get stuck with a giant knot that feels impossible to untangle. How do you do it?!
I had a potential client. Just for a cut and all over color. She lives 100 miles away from me and I told her that with mileage, my time plus price for services was going to be $450 and she said she couldn't afford it 😅 I was willing to only charge $200 if she came to me.
For long hair toning, its best to fill 1 bottle with the toner formula, gently mix and divide the formula between 2 bottles and add developer accordingly :)
Thank you! I was also thinking..... what if I pour too much then don't have enough room to add developer? After 1/2ing? Cause the bottles were different and i wasn't sure if they had equal amounts of ounces? Il try it next time!
I am a client. I will tell you that I see no issue because you have experience! What I would worry about is the labeled beginner stylist who might charge the same thing, and have you sitting for four hours while they don’t know how to accomplish the same thing the experienced colorist would but charging the same amount. I’m just being honest here, but if you are a beginner please just tell me you don’t think you can help and point me to someone with more experience. Don’t just take my money if you haven’t earned it. Hope this helps.🎉
Gorgeous!!!! Im a new stylist and I started right before the pandemic, so technically I haven't started lol but you always give the best advice. Taking notes for sure!
Wow that’s gorgeous! I’m considering going to cosmetology school. Would you ever do a vid talking about pros and cons of becoming a hair stylist? I want to do hair but I’m worried i want be good at it 😬
hair by Kristi Jennings thank you! And this might sound crazy but I’m not sure if it’s my passion without trying it 😂 i do enjoy hair and i think I’d love it but still worries me lol
You should definitely get what you’re worth. I had a color correction done Thursday. She only charged $75 an hour. I asked about how long it would take. But no one really knew how long exactly. I let her know I didn’t want to spend more than $400. My hair is shoulder length. I know she deserved more than she charged me. Considering it took about 5 1/2 hours. I like the bluntness so I know ahead of time. But she only charged me $280. When she really should have received probably an extra $100. But I don’t feel bad because I told her I didn’t want to spend more than $400 and she only charged me $280. Maybe I’m over calculating it. Idk since I do have short hair. But yes you guys deserve what you charge. If the customer can’t afford it then don’t get it done. I also told her that if it was going to be over $400 to just color my hair the burgundy I had been coloring it myself and do a cut. Either way I would’ve still had my hair done. She was really sweet. And yes sometimes it is nice to do a little extra at no charge because that can possibly bring back potential customers. And charge what it should’ve been next time. Either way just be honest. They can find another hairstylist if they don’t like it. 🤷🏻♀️
Yes! It's nice to see understanding and reasonable clients like yourself! Chances are, cause I have under charged when someone gave me a priced they'd top out at, I way under charged cause I either wasn't able to get to the final end result, or cause I still had a hard time mentally charging more. Even if it was discussed. She also could have under charged hoping it would allow you to leave her a larger tip. But who knows there's many reasons for the low ball charge. I think it's nice to charge less. When you could have charged max, it builds trust with client to know it's not just about the $$$
I'm a client, and my first question if I'm looking into going to a new stylist, would be "what is your hourly rate...because my hair is thick AF, DARK AF, and I'm a nit-picky virgo who is going to take pretty much all day.. so I need your hourly rate so I can start pulling cash out of the ATM in preparation for my visit." Usually, they don't message me back lol.. Nobody wants a client like me, no matter how much I'm willing to pay LMAO.. that's why I gotta learn to do my own hair "laughs and then cries* Girrrl, I would have guessed that this service was at the minimum 1500! You are definitely worth what you are charging and I really hope your clients are tipping you WELL..
Thank you so much! Honestly, I think it's good to ask and be open about price.... I wish more clients were like that! It's more also does the stylist think they can accomplish your goal
Love this! Pricing has definitely been something that I’ve struggled with, I live in a small town so people expect to pay less, but like you said, we end up doing so many extra steps, colors etc that it isn’t realistic. Love your honesty!☺️
I just want to say you are blessed with talent ❤️..... Your amazing. May I ask what state your from..? Because if you are in California I'm willing to drive to see you and have you do my hair 🤗💞💯
Maybe doing a partial to start.... especially when doing balayage, cause your painting thru the ends typically, they can keep going thru the ends multiple times and lighten different areas. Or if the hair is dark going very light, only lightening a few levels then next time going even brighter
I haven't tried it..... I feel like it would be so time consuming constantly picking up the dryer..... even tho some people the comb out probably equal the difference lol
I like the hourly rate. I was scared to charge when they ask for extra. I am finally getting to the point I dont care and charge because it takes so much extra time when they ask for extra services.
If it's a full lightening service it's easier to start at the bottom with a lower developer. Just make sure you keep checking if you need to pull the foils out
Oh wow, I've been wondering how you get all that back combing out, I had no idea you spend so much time with the brushing!!! I've only back combed my hair and a mannequin head, but not a TON, and both times, I just soaked in the olaplex #2 and kinda waited for it to detangle... but I used A LOT of the product in order to help with that, but still, I can't imagine how time consuming that is!!!! SO worth it though, it looks so amazing!!
Client side, $100 is good if the stylist is reputable and does a good job. Some newer stylists/ colorists take forever because they are still learning, and it’s anyone’s guess if it will come out the way the client was told it would. I don’t think it’s fair to have the same price rate for varied quality in work. With that said, if a colorist/ blinding specialist is going to charge $100 an hour for a service, don’t double and triple book your appointments. It’s not good for you (you’ll burn out quick) or your clients (they may want to ask you a question about their hair, or tell you it’s burning, but they can’t because they were left under a dryer or at a chair all by themselves to process. Some clients are too shy, or scared to interrupt another appointment with their issue.
I’m a stylist and I am so happy other stylist are finally talking about pricing!! People just thought we charge a lot because we can instead of knowing why 👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you so much! Stylists have shadowed me so that's an option too!
Girl, you are brilliant at what you do! such an informative video! keep up the good work. I swear you we're gonna take the girls eye out with that comb at one point thou hahaha xxx
Not the eye but definitely have slapped the mask strap with it 😂😂😂🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@hairbykristijennings6648 HAHAHAHAH! Brilliant! I love your video’s Kristi! 💖💕
You should totally talkmabout pricing it helps newer stylist like me, and its something I struggle with a lot
Im so glad to know! I will keep adding it into my videos!
Totally! It’s really eye opening
Love the video. Thank you Kristi
Fellow hairstylist here...my favorite is when you tell a client that you don't feel well and they hit you with "oh you should go home after you get done with my hair" but they have to get their hair done first!
We need more video time about the toning👍
My haidresser just overtoned my bottoms, and not toned enough my top. It looked bad overall.
I was able to wash it off, so now I am planning to tone it by myself with Redken 9V+ 9P.
You do an amazing job! Watched a lot of your videos
I agree that the discussion of charging was put into your video..I think you should do a separate video just on this topic. It needs to be told and heard by both clients and other stylists as well..
Very pretty results!
Thank you so much!
Good job really awesome 👌 👏 keep it up 💯
I totally agree with your breakdown on cost on a service that will last all day, totally fair!! Why should us hairstylist short ourselves for an all day service when you can be getting multiple clients in making more money. It should be talked about for sure!!
Awesome job!
Thank you!
Your Amazing !! And YOU are worth the price , some stylist ' are Not ... But with your results yas mam !! Worth every penny . Love this video as well you are my GO To .. for my hair and others I do : )
WOW WOW WOW 🤩
You’re a magician!
You know I’m obsessed with you work 🥰
Can I please ask what the end charge was?
Thank you! Yes, end cost was $550 with $100 deposit
I love all your face expressions!!! You are so funny in a nice way
About early clients..
Love a long video watched till the end
Yay! It's a long one! Thank you so much!
Oh, I like your hair, it looks really good 👍
Thank you!
I want to do hair but I’m worried i want be good at it 😬
Girl definitely go to cosmetology school you won’t regret it and don’t worry about whether you will be good at it or not.
Yes! I can! And also.... if it's your passion. Just go! You'll never regret doing something you love!
hair by Kristi Jennings thank you! And this might sound crazy but I’m not sure if it’s my passion without trying it 😂 i do enjoy hair and i think I’d love it but still worries me lol
I would highly suggest to job shadow a few local stylists? Maybe at the type of salon you'd want to be at?
Beautiful work!
Thank you!
I suggest using a ditangle brush instead on comb maybe that can help with the time it Helps me very much
Thank you! Ive tried a few combs and sometimes I like them sometimes not. I could be using the wrong one tho!
When you could have charged max, it builds trust with client to know it's not just about the $$$
So right about hourly charge, thank you,you are amazing 👍👏👌
Thank you for watching!
So beautiful!!!
😍😍😍
Thank you!
Underrated hairstylist 😍😍
Thank you!
Me too! Im from a small farm town so I totally get it! People will pay tho! Your worth it!
I just want to say you are blessed with talent ❤️..... Your amazing.
May I ask what state your from..? Because if you are in California I'm willing to drive to see you and have you do my hair 🤗💞💯
Thank you so much! I’m in Wa state..... which depending on where in Cali might be an equal drive! 😂😂 In any case, thank you for the consideration!
If they do decide to do multiple sessions, that means doing like a money piece today, partial the next, then the rest of the head?
Maybe doing a partial to start.... especially when doing balayage, cause your painting thru the ends typically, they can keep going thru the ends multiple times and lighten different areas. Or if the hair is dark going very light, only lightening a few levels then next time going even brighter
Finally someone that talks about pricing .it is a lot of work and we kinda undercharge bleach services
Oh yes, wayyyyyy under charge! Time to change that!
Coffe first, then hair always 💪🏼😂🥰 🏴
Hi kristy genning bcan you do bayeleg if hear is black what bleach you us what tonur you us what developer tou us mak sur can you do video
Haw do you water down the bleach? Thank you 😊
I just spray it down a little.... not too much!
Have you ever tried blowing the shorter hairs out with a blowdryer insted of backcombing it? It looks easy and you dont have to comb out the tease 🤔
I haven't tried it..... I feel like it would be so time consuming constantly picking up the dryer..... even tho some people the comb out probably equal the difference lol
So pretty!
Thanks so much!
I like the hourly rate. I was scared to charge when they ask for extra. I am finally getting to the point I dont care and charge because it takes so much extra time when they ask for extra services.
Her hair looks stunning!!! I have long hair that i bleached myself it took 4 hours and was such a struggle tbh.
Oh man I can't imagine doing a full bleach out on myself! You're brave!
@@hairbykristijennings6648 i did highlights... it turned out okay not too terrible... thankfully!
That's good! But still all over highlights would be tough! Especially down the back!
I love you and agree with you however I live in a tiny town and would never have color business.
How i can know, when i start in the bottom or on the top of the hair with bleach?
If it's a full lightening service it's easier to start at the bottom with a lower developer. Just make sure you keep checking if you need to pull the foils out
😂😂
You're real!!! Great post!!
Thank you so much!
I soooo agree with what you were talking about reguarding how to charge..
Im up at 3:20a.m lol love love all you videos
Oh yay! I love to see this! Thank you for watching!
Yes it's crazy how long it takes to comb out! But worth the end result!

Kristi, why do you have to be in the literal opposite end of the country from me? I would be in your chair in a heartbeat!
Omg thank you! That means so much! If you're everrrrrrrrrrr visiting.......
@@hairbykristijennings6648 you're welcome!! I'm in Florida so.... Lol.
Oh yes.... quite far lol
It totally makes sense for you to charge per hour on these long haul sessions.
Yes! I totally agree!
Omg I love you so much I’m so glad I’m not the only person that does ALL of these things 😂😂😂😂😂 be myyy frienddddd 💕💕
Frieeennnnddssssssss 😄😄😄😄 so glad to know im not alone! 😂😂😂🤦♀️🤦♀️
Time is money...product is money
👏👏
Lol so relateable (the beginning of your vid)
Love Love Love!!!
