  • As the smart home industry transitions to Matter, the biggest question for most of us is how do we get our old smart devices to upgrade to Matter? Sadly, no one's talking about it...so I did. Here's how your old smart home devices get updates or upgrades to become Matter smart home compatible. Everything from Zigbee, to Z-Wave, to WiFi, and Thread, and everything in between could eventually become Matter ready, and today I'm showing you how.
    The first big piece of news is Zigbee Direct, which is finally available. Zigbee Direct adds Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to the specification and this means a single Zigbee Direct device added to your home will expose your entire Zigbee network to BLE hubs, speakers, and more! Learn more about this in today's video.

    Great video, Brian. Having Zigbee devices connect w/o a manufacturer's hub seems a bit problematic when it comes to firmware upgrades. Simple devices might not really need the upgrades, but others will. I have, for example, 16 Hue bulbs that all receive firmware updates from time to time and of course Hue handles them all. Even though Hue might support Matter, it isn't really needed now as Hue already works with everything. For me, Matter "doesn't" anytime in the next few months. IMHO Matter will really only be useful for the relatively expensive devices/systems that won't currently be accessible by your chosen ecosystem. For example, folks with Nest cameras, doorbells, will want it to use them with Homekit. I have a Ring Alarm System and have it working in Homekit with Homebridge, but it would be nice to bring it in the "front door" via Matter.. Aqara already works with everybody, but Eve doesn't. For the handful of folks who might want to use their Eve sensor with something in addition to Homekit it might be good. Anyway,, keep doing these kinds of videos, Brian as folks are going to be awfully confused in 2023 while this all sorts out.

    I bought my first Smarthub - the Aeotec - in early 2022. At the time, it seemed like most things I read / watched suggested that Z-Wave was preferred over Zigbee because it used less energy. The exception was if you needed farther range or faster speeds then Zigbee would be best.
    So, if I can find the same quality / priced solution in both Z-Wave and Zigbee then I’ve been picking Z-Wave.
    Now, it seems like people are preparing a burial shroud for Z-Wave. The idea of Matter allowing many devices to talk to it instead of just a single hub is awesome, but it seems like I will still need a hub of some sort to run my automations / routines.
    If I need a hub anyway, and if Z-Wave use less energy and hence has better battery life, and if all other things are equal (like Schlage Connect Z-Wave vs Zigbee) then why wouldn’t I want to go with Z-Wave?
    The only argument I can see is that companies *might* drop support for Z-Wave - which I doubt will happen as long as Z-Wave has a power advantage and people keep buying Z-Wave products.
    Do you see it differently?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  Год назад

      Sadly, I do see things a bit differently.
      One thing you said...if you need range, go Z-Wave, not ZigBee. 😀
      Anyways, Z-Wave has been in trouble since Thread. Thread and ZigBee are relatively the same when it comes to power use, Thread can travel as far as Z-Wave, and includes tech to stop it from being interfered with.
      And it's as fast as ZigBee and IP based.
      It's taking out Z-Wave, not Wifi or ZigBee.
      That's where Matter comes in, because it uses Thread and therefore has a low power solution. Z-Wave is dying right now, unless they do something dramatic.
      It'll still work though! So don't throw out your stuff.

    The way I understood Matter from the start, I believed Zigbee was going to be part of Matter anyway. Zigbee being an underlying protocol, and Matter sitting on top of it, same as Bluetooth, WiFi and Thread were sitting underneath Matter.
    So existing Zigbee devices that do not have BLE would still not be able to be Zigbee Direct, so is Zigbee Direct now a competitor for Matter? So again, is the Alliance is fragmenting the market?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  Год назад

      Hey Brendan, I agree that Zigbee will eventually end up in Matter so I think you had it right from the start.
      Existing Zigbee devices won't have that BLE connection that Zigbee Direct has, but all existing Zigbee devices (Direct, or not) are exposed to BLE Hubs/Etc. through a single Zigbee Direct Device.
      So you need one, and then it acts just like Matter and I think like you said, the underlying technology is there with Zigbee 3.0 and DotDot.

    • @Gorgggg
      @Gorgggg Год назад

      @@AutomateYourLife One is probably a little too little, especially for larger homes since BLE reach is not that large, once hubs like google home hub or apple tv or whatever talk could talk to ZigBee direct devices though, it would remove that problem mostly.
      Also interesting is that many ZigBee devices already contain chips which could potentially talk in BLE, and the newer hue lamps also already contain Bluetooth support right now, so it could be that those devices will be updated to ZigBee direct (and therefore start forwarding other devices in their ZigBee network)

    This standard is taking way too long to roll out. I feel like I'll be 65 by the time this is all connected the way I was hoping it would be by now. I'm losing interest in this space because it's just taking forever to roll out.
