- For 30 minutes at a time, these kids own the streets. Our crew embedded with some up-and-comers in the Portland street takeover scene to see what it's really like to do burnouts in an intersection, surrounded by hundreds of other kids.
Everyone knows this is dangerous, and it's illegal. What you do with that info depends on who you are. Local news features interviews with people who hate it. Cops release statements saying they're cracking down. But for hundreds of young people, this is where you meet friends, stunt, and blow off steam.
We spent time at a couple of slideshows during New Year's Eve weekend, and interviewed people to find out how to gain notoriety, why this scene is worth the risk, and what they think of their public image.

Exactly. If they kept this to industrial areas and cleaned up after themselves it would be one thing. The reason they come to residential intersections is because the industrial areas now have security, because of all the damage they caused...
@@tylerroberts3574 you speak exactly like those dumbasses
The problem is with the people making it illegal. If you go all the way down to the root of it, they only go into the intersections because the cops ran them out their arena essentially and they don’t necessarily condone people getting close they just decide to. And for the fireworks there’s never been a problem as long as their traditional fireworks, and for people getting robbed and hurt, that’s just portland.

Summer 2023 there was a street takeover on NE 60th and Scott in my neighborhood. The attendees flooded the 7-11 on the corner and stole tons of merch, especially alcohol. Some kids came behind the counter and told the owner to open the register. When he refused 3 kids showed their pistols. They broke windows, the sign and robbed that immigrant family causing over $15,000 of damage. Cops would not come. The owner was on the phone with them while they were getting robbed and they would not come. There is a line between street culture and anarchy. Yes, let’s give kids a safe place to explore their culture and community, and maybe even be stupid, but not at the expense of the safety of families, children, and small businesses. This was my neighborhood. That was the 7-11 my kids go to. It’s fucked up. They have cars, drive away from population centers.
It's going to get worse. Move to the burbs, like Beaverton.

@11:01 "There's nothing like this on the east coast." My brother in Christ, I live in Atlanta... this is a nightly occurrence and way more dangerous. It's so bad that in Atlanta they have attempted to host "legal" takeover events at racetrack parking lots with barriers for them to get it out of their system. It didn't work, as things almost inevitably get violent. Many big intersections have steel plates laid down in order to prevent people from using them for this trash. This is just ignorant and ratchet behaviour, and to know one's surprise, Portland's version of it is tame in comparison.
We have the same deal going on in Miami, its a nightly occurrence as well and sometimes multiple spots at a time. That and also street racing on long stretches of road in the outskirts of the city
DMV gets it done fr!!
What do the plates do? Shred spinning tires?

I was part of the og "street" drifting in portland. Never once was there an issue with gun violence. We never shut down intersections. 90% of the time we were in industrial lots or areas that were shut down. We would bring trash bags and leave places cleaner than when we showed up. When cops would show up it was usually only one. They would come tell us to move on, or sometimes just watch. There was never a problem with it. No one got arrested. I dont remember any tickets given out, if any. It was a respectful way for us to go have fun. And thats the difference. We need to bring that back. Not losing someone to a stray bullet trying to leave.

Well that’s what the court system and police label it as.
I'm not a boomer - Gen X'er with a 68 Charger I've had since I was 15. Back in the day I cruised the streets, we all drove around, gathered around the Porky's hamburger stand in St. Paul and all the musclecars would cruise up and down the streets. The cops would show up once in a while and cruise around and occasionally pull someone over but mostly there was no big fuss. I remember one time some guys started putting down bleach at an intersection and people did burnouts and the cops shut everything down right away. But there was never the violence I see in a lot of these videos, and nobody ever stopped traffic in the middle of an intersection in the city. To me, it seems like it's kind of crappy that people do that these days. It's kind of arrogant and to be honest it kind of pisses me off, that kind of arrogance. Like you think you're more important than anyone else. I also don't ever remember anyone firing off any guns like what happens in some of these street takeovers. I can't relate to this new culture. To me, they seem like they're a bunch of dicks. Just my opinion.
They’re kids though. Like the host said, 19 year old him would be there. And 19 year old me would be there as well. But 31 year old me thinks just like your comment suggests
@@Boost-EdAutomotive No my comment suggests we would be there but not shutting down busy roads and being violent. We were there, and not shutting down busy roads or getting violent. At least the violence was very chill compared to this.
When he was talking about oldheads drag racing I was like... What about just cruising the strip? That was like the main thing, wasn't it? (born 96) I remember being out in downtown PDX summer Friday night like 12ish years ago people were still just cruising stuff like muscle cars, bobber bikes, low riders, etc. Everything these days has gotta be turned up to 11 for some reason
@@au1317 yeah! Thanks that really brings up a lot of memories. Everyone was pretty relaxed and it was just fun to cruise down the main strip checking out and appreciating the other cars. I don’t get all this modern stuff it seems very ego driven and empty.
For these people, the motivation isn’t anything related to car culture. They’re simply using cars as tools to achieve their actual goal; causing chaos.
Spinning in circles with automatics 😂
Most of them don't even know how to drive a real car with three pedals...

The crowd around it just sucks, and its not a good group of people to be around. There is an absolute attitude, intelligence, and personality difference between these children and old school street drifters. Its like kids with family problems bringing it out in public for attention being compared to guys who just want to slide in peace in the mountains or somewhere isolated and not bother anybody. People are justifiably angry at these kids because at its core its for attention and dont care on who they hurt or inconvenience. To compare these guys to skateboarders is like kids who think they are cool because all they can ride is a half pipe and nothing else.
There’s Portland International Raceway that could be used instead of doing the street takeovers. But because there’s rules/safety in mind, it’s no longer an option. It’s all about rebellion, instant gratification, and low effort required. As a car person I get having the passion, but not at stopping the lives of others or worse, risking their safety. Have fun, but do it sensibly 💁🏼♂️
Just imagine during a street takeover that an ambulance had some dying and couldn’t get through because of the congestion. Then the person in the ambulance dies because of a 3-5 minute delay getting to a hospital. It’s an unintended consequence, but a real possibility! That’s only one of many things I thought of from street takeover dangers.
What you just said is only adding to the problem. The solution isnt to go to a racetrack where it costs $100s a day just to get in, we need to give car people safe places where they can have fun FOR FREE. I absolutely do not and can not pay the fees tracks have just to use them. Theres also not alot of racetracks left so where are people supposed to go? My state doesn't even have race tracks any more, I have to drive 5-6 hours out of state to see a racetrack and its only a small circle course track.
@@mcfish206here's a better idea, every car at a street take over gets impounded and sold. Every participant goes to jail for a week or two and has their drivers license suspended for a year.
@@JoeStanek-vu7rl Thats a little extreme for just wanting to do a burnout or donut in your car. You clearly didnt read my comment. We need to give car people a safe, free space that they can have fun in. Like abandoned parking lots would be a start, then it takes it off the street
@@mcfish206100.00 a day? What track can you do that at? A single hpde event in my area at least is 450.00. It’s part of what’s been wrong for a very long time in the car scene. You’d hear stories back when my parents grew up in the area they could go to the drag strip on Friday nights and cost you next to nothing, meanwhile more and more tracks get closed so fewer locations and fewer days to rent the track which inflates the costs accompanied by entry level job wages being stagnant for decades (as mentioned in video it’s a bunch of younger kids) so they’re really isn’t an outlet for them. Other person in this threads comments doing some form of extreme punishment won’t work and has never worked, just look at skateboarding as an example. You can make it as illegal as you want but it’s not going to stop it, wasn’t until county and city made designated skate parks popped up and now it’s no longer a problem.
As a car person I feel this form of car enthusiasts is stupid and pointless and being older now with a decent job I can afford to do 450.00 track days but I remember in high school we’d be doing stupid street races because there was no alternative for us so in that regard I get it however we never blocked intersections and got in peoples way. There’s plenty of airport parking lots etc like used in auto x events that could be used instead with more safety in mind.

Im a former illegal street racer who raced in the Tokyo/Yokohama area from 1984-1995. It was nothing for a friday night to find ourselves out with about 2000 plus spectators lining the streets and a 100 plus cars out getting it on in a serious kinda way. We were primarily drifting and drag racing. It was very organized and a lot of the heavy hitters actually had sponsorship! I still drive a hopped up car today, I just dont get stupid on the streets anymore. If you wanna get it off the streets and make it safer for everyone, there has to be an outlet where you can do this sort of thing, have a little fun, burn off a little steam, show off your car and your skill behind the wheel. Unfortunately there are very few places to "safely do this" and a lot of it is due to the sue happy society we now live in.

I gotta read a book i lost brain matter watching this
Every generation seems to have their rebellion. With mine, it was cruising and 82nd avenue used to be a very different place. There were shops, people buying music, getting things to eat, and other things. Then the laws were passed to shut it down. That did stop the particular activity, but it really didn't stop the need to just get out there and do stuff.
So people did other stuff, and I'm not sure that other stuff was better --even for them. And 82nd changed. Once the money was pushed away, so went the businesses and in came the crime and in came the rot.
Back then, the idea of there being a place was not considered officially that I can recall. What I do recall was anger, and the loss of a scene that many people valued.
It's obvious to me these people value their scene. It's more than rebelling to them, same as it was to us.
Would a place work? I don't know. Maybe if it were something those people own, and by that I mean the inevitable commercialization of it would be their doing. Maybe. Do they want that?
Whatever comes of this, people should be asking the question, "what do those people do, if it's not this?" For us, the answers were not good. And people will do something. Again, for us, I wonder whether anyone asked the various businesses who often made it on those Fridays... Clearly they didn't make it without the scene happening and in many cases, neither did what came after. What came after is known as Felony Flats.
There is a place to do it it’s called the track

Concept: As a means of insuring safety, espicially with minors involved and wack adults, make events for folks to test their skills out at PDX international raceway. Anyone who seeks to ride/drive has to sign a waiver, crowd can gather, venue can sell drinks or whatever to get their money, etc. Do it every Saturday night or something, create an accessible, safe outlet for it as a means of prevention and harm reduction rather than reactionary response.
Street takeovers happen because Clackamas County shut down drifting at the one place you could do it safely and legally, Pat's Acres Racing Complex.
No mention of the shots fired on NYE at one of these in PDX?
Nah they’re clearly trying to make these broke idiots look like good people.
take overs on intersections < take overs in industrial parks
Drift day at the track >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Doing donuts and burnouts can’t be dangerous, it’s so basic. Racing downhill on a mountain is dangerous
Idc what you drive stop doing donuts in the intersection and hit the track 💯 your making real drifters look bad 🤦
Take your car to a damn track this is a discrace to the car community i love drifting! at the damn track in a legit setting where you're not gonna hurt ppl and not risk everything. TRACK THATS WHERE THIS BELONGS IS SIMPLE
you should’ve seen when they shut down all those bridges you drove by all through portland😂
I’m from oregon and always loved cars and know what a real race car is but i never attented these street takeovers🫡 all fuckin wack and the people too fck em all. One day ima start a better and more professional movement
