"I do want to rewind this back a second and I wanna hear that transition piece between these two movements." - Every Unwound fan that has heard Terminus
You also have to consider this was tracked onto 8 track analog and self recorded and produced in a barn, so there was some obvious bouncing down going on and "executive decisions" happening during the tracking which made things push left or right. Some criticisms of the balance are really not appropriate unless considering the limitations of 90's recordings in a pre DAW world. It is an absolute masterpiece and I wish a lot of contemporary recordings had this much interesting vibe going on with all limitless possibilities.
Strange, i feel nothing but euphoria when i listen to this song. I can understand why some people might find jarring songs uncomfortable but for me I think one of the main staples of punk or noise rock is to make music that is dissonant or discordant. And what makes Unwound so special is that they capture this ethos whilst also mixing in incredibly beautiful and emotional melodies. Overall, if experimental and dissonant music can make you feel uncomfortable than I would've definitely not have dived into Unwound with Terminus. A lot of songs from that album are very experimental and dark but if I were to recommend one from that album for you, I would say listen to Demons Sing Love Songs or maybe Look a Ghost
This is straight up avant garde rock to me (but that's just like saying it's really original...). Anyways, I'm really digging it! Reminds me of something I can't put my finger on right now. But there's some things that makes me think a bit of a fusion between Talking Heads, Primus and early Jane's Addiction. Whish I could recall what it really reminds me of though....
It's mainly just Post-Rock, Art-Rock, Post-Hardcore but it draws influence from Punk , Noise Rock and Chamber Music . It's an interesting blend of sounds
AWESOME 👍 KILLER BAND... I grew up in Olympia WA 👌long time friends with them from way back when 🤘 Definitely need to explore some more Pacific Northwest bands... BOTCH, KARP, STEEL POLE BATHTUBS...
Sara Lund does teach drums online out of Portland, and she’s really nice. I wish I could have been there in Olympia when all those amazing bands were playing
That's awesome! I always hoped that some of my high school/uni friends in bands had actually made it big but I've never heard any of their stuff so I have to believe they all quit trying due to life or burnout or whatever.
Were they... Tight Bros from Way Back When? Also... They are back!! My God! I saw them in LA on Valentine's Day, and I hope you're coming to the Olympia show if you didn't see them in Seattle the first go around. Jared Warren is playing bass in lieu of Vern. They all sound so, so incredible. Do not miss it.
@@StaggaLagsImpressive 😂You must be like the only person than me that would get a Karp/Tight Bro reference 😂😂👌 However I was referring to Botch whilst using that reference as you surely know 😂 Have not seen Karp since 94 🙄 I had no idea they are playing again 🤷♂️🤷♂️👌🙏🏻I definitely definitely need to look that information up 👌thanks I even just saw Unwound and Jared was filling in on bass at the Seattle Show Box 👌it was iconic
"Anxious, discomfort, unease and paranoid"... sounds like my kind of music 🤣. I actually really liked this on a first listen. Your analysis was very interesting as always. I have no idea how to break it down. I just listen and feel the vibes. I didn't find anything uncomfortable. I actually I found it rather relaxing/enjoyable, especially the 2nd half or wherever it mellowed out. Maybe a break from the black metal vibes.
Never heard of these guys, but this was definitely interesting. Kinda reminded me of a more psychedelic, proggier, post-ier Sonic Youth at times, though I very much agree with the intro that it's pretty hard to classify. It's definitely a track that keeps my interest if purely because of all the fascinating sounds and genre mashups, yet I consistently found myself more intrigued than moved. There was never really a moment where I went "this is awesome" as opposed to just "this is interesting."
The way you talked about how the musicians sound like they can’t play together during the analysis around 25 minutes is incredibly intuitive given that this is essentially there breakup album
You r doing God's work!!!! This is my fav song of all time. Have to admit I don't understand a thing about the underlying intention, but for sure it's a super epic song mentally and really beautiful
this album is a masterpiece tbh. i know they are divisive but it's really good to go through their discography and see them as a whole. this is, as they stated, a "guitar-drums-bass" band. it's so interesting to hear people talk about it but that melancholy mixed with fear and joy....you should try swan lmao
Definitely one of their oddest songs ever, yet very beautiful. I believe it's mostly abstract and indeed they have an earlier song titled "Abstractions". They also have an earlier song titled "Nervous Energy" which seems to be one of their most common themes throughout their entire career, this song is no exception. Unwound takes the cake when it comes to experimentation in punk, post-punk, grunge and the 80's/90's heavy underground scene in general. They took it to a new and exciting level that has hardly, if ever at all, been properly replicated.
Fake Train and New Plastic Ideas are two of my all-time favorite albums, but after that, they start to lose me, although Repetition wasn't too bad. The only time I got to see them was on their tour for this album, and, honestly, it was a disappointing show. I've never liked this album, the overall sound is just boring to me. I would label their early material post-hardcore, this album post-rock. That's just my two cents.
Hell yeah New Plastic Ideas is probably my fave Unwound album, Repetition has its moments which are admittedly some really high highs but NPI is just the most consistently awesome

the violin part in this song has always given me some heavy Godspeed You! Black Emperor vibes. Love Unwound and Godspeed
Here after Unwound posted a screenshot of them watching this react video. Congratulations, CR!
same lol
That's awesome!
One of my favorite albums of all time. Criminally underrated

Unwound are top 3 all time for rock

One of the best rock albums ever
Yes I love this band!! Leaves Turn Inside You is a post hardcore classic.
Oh fuck yes. My favorite song from one of my favorite albums.
"anxiety, paranoia..."
Yes. Well observed, tbh. Welcome to Unwound.

nice reaction
Top 5 band for me! so many great albums in their discography

They were close associates with the Sonic Youth and freqeuntly opened for them.

The shift at the end of this song is magical
Do October All Over!!!
I would absolutely love to see his reaction and thoughts on anything from the new Black Country, New Road album, especially basketball shoes.
Top 10 favorite band for me.
this album is a freaking masterpiece
I still love to scream “PSYCHEDELIC PUNKS” at few select shows…
This single song was a big turning point, putting the 90s to bed, bringing on the aughts, swan song of Unwound🖤
For anyone who is interested, Snowy reacted to the entire album so head over there 😃

YES!!
please do a tutorial on how to train your musical ear and get better at song analysis
Great idea!

Gray Matter- Thog
same vein as Unwound but more melodic.
I've spent 15 years trying to fathom what's so special about this album.
