In Canada, most high-rise condominiums only have an 8" concrete slab that separates neighbouring units from above one another. All too often condo by-laws and rules are written poorly or inaccurately. What this means is, in over 85% of the inspections we conduct homeowners and contractors install acoustic underlays NOT tested for condos. If you wish to learn more about how to prevent noise, instead of only dealing with it after it lands on your door step we would be pleased to continue this conversation.

There is a "magic" threshold for noise violation. The laws where I am written clearly define ways to measure the volume of the noise from the property of the person writing the complaint and what times what thresholds are legal.

I live in an apartment building and my upstairs neighbors are always banging around, even in the middle of the night it sounds like a bunch of elephants walking around. I tried to talking to them on multiple occasions but the last time they were kind of rude and dismissive to me. So at this point what should I do?

If you've already spoken with the noisy neighbours with no success, the next step would be involving the landlord or property manager of the building. It helps if you can keep a log of the disturbances over a couple of weeks, including the times they occur. You can read a more in-depth guide on our website, if you're interested: www.squareone.ca/resource-centres/homeowner/noise-complaints-and-disturbances
