Dan Fogelman (Tangled) teams up with composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Glenn Slater (Tangled) for ABC's offbeat new musical-comedy.
Think people are slightly missing the point here... It's supposed to be ridiculous and over the top, and the bursting out into song is meant to be silly. People saying "It would be better if it wasn't a musical- the entire concept is that it's a medieval, fairytale type adventure but people keep interrupting it by bursting into song and it's completely incongruous. It's taking all these genres and mixing them up and parodying them and it's hilarious.
I don't understand how people don't understand that. I mean it's not like the show is trying to be subtle about it. And musicals + fairy tales go hand in hand, just look at Disney.
Looks good. Kinda reminds me of others great parodies like "Robin Hood: Man in Thights" or "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". And I love that it's a musical. I'm so gonna watch it!
I do not really get why the ratings were so... low and the reviews often turned out to be just... meh. I watched the first episode and immediately the seven remaining episodes in a single watchthrough. I am so sad season one is over. I really think this deserves another season or at least some sort of movie cut with an alternate ending if season 2 is not meant to be produced so fans of this show at least will have some closure on the cliffhanger. There are some really clever jokes, straightup upbeat music, very well done costumes, particularly brilliant acting (just look at the king!) and it really sets the mood skyhigh. Also, as a medieval movie, maybe comparable to Brooks' "Men in Tights" or the old Python movies, this works, too. In my oppinion, this show is brilliant and has the cha ce to become something like an "underground hit", like back in the day, when Jack Blacks "The Pic of Destiny" was conceived to be "a bum" when it was played in cinemas, but became a legend on DVD-sales afterwards.
They got season 2. Perhaps, if we keep pointing people at this gem, they'll be allowed to keep going. Very much Robin Hood Men In Tights sense of humour (and Princess Bride). Brilliant stuff and a lot of high grade actors having a LOT of fun!

If you're a theater/musical kid you will enjoy galavant. All the musical number is top notch and the plots full of twists
