My 140 lb (ish) Great Pyrenees tries to passive aggressively wake me up at 2 am to go on her 'night patrol' (she doesn't actually have a 'guardian' job but likes to pretend she's in charge of the neighborhood, but only at 2 am because daytime patrol has scary sounds lol). The process of waking me up begins with those 'huffing' sounds, going from quiet huffs to loud enough to imply she is suffocating. If I don't respond (sometimes on purpose just for my entertainment) she will jump on my bed, push her giant face right up against mine, and repeat the soft huffing, trying to seem as innocent as possible. If she has to, she'll bring out her 'paw routine', by ever-so-gently tapping my shoulder with a paw, wait, repeat: huff huff, paw tap, maybe add in a little wiggle (feels more like an earthquake at her size), wait again. If push comes to shove she'll go for the winner by putting her cold wet nose directly inside my ear and sniff!! That's risky because it could land a knee jab to her ribs, but it's more likely to induce a giggle for the win! Thats 90% of the time because a dog who looks exactly like a baby polar bear and has such fine acting skills deserves a 2 am off-leash walk! And for as much as I'd like a whole nights sleep, I think I'd miss her antics trying to wake me up, and would definitely miss those occasions when we are on patrol and she sees a cat or wild rabbit! She goes full Genghis Khan chasing after them! But they're not worried because they know she won't last at a full run for more than 12 seconds! They are quite safe. Even better, those few seconds of hard cardio (and a job well done protecting the streets from those intruders) will bring on a solid 4 hour deep, snoring sleep when we get home. Fair trade. All is good in the world when your guardian dog is snoring!! 😅
