Hi, I am going to do some online courses this spring that will cover everything in much more detail, keep subscribed as I will put out the email list soon x
Lol the part where you used cards for the ears- I've never thought to do that. For pieces like that I pinch it flat between my finger and thumb and felt through it that way. Yes I prick myself once or twice, but usually I just slowly carve away skin layers as the barbs grind against them lol. Gives me that good shape! But uh... your way seems a lot less painful
Am doing a video covering hooves, hope to do it in a week or two but have been saying that a while! Fingers crossed I'll do it soon, thanks for watching 👀 x
how many layers does it take to build up the base? i used pipe cleaners for my horse as the armature, and it is still super thin even with the fibers. how many layers do i need to make it stalky like a horse? Also im strugglign with filling up the legs
Maybe wire will be stronger for the armature, have a look at my armature video for more on that. I wrap wool round the wire and just keep felting and building. Once it is a bit bigger than I want I spend ages felting all over to really firm it up. I also have a video on doing the base for legs so have a look there. It's not really about layers but just building up. I have an Exmoor pony time lapse too. I will be doing online horse courses in the new year which will follow the whole process and explain all in detail. Not sure what you mean for filling the legs, just wrap more wool round slowly plus I use carded wool, are you using the same or is it a roving type wool (my wool video explains the difference). Horses are tricky but practice really helps, thanks for watching x
@@feltsbyphilippa thanks for the advice! I was able to build up my horse really well, but his hooves and legs were a struggle. My next question...as im watching you do this video, im confused about how you make the mane and tail fluffy and not too firm like the body.
@@RaychelD2400 I use roving or tops types wool and just attach at the crest of the mane or top of the tail. The tail is the hardest to make it look long. My online tutorial will cover all of this in much better detail but that won't be till the new year. Attach the mane in the middle of the wool and then fold over to which ever side you want it. Same with the forelock, attach in the middle and fold forward. Well done so far, legs and hooves are so tricky and just take practice. Take care Pippa x
Thank you for your comment, I will, at some point but I may develop an online course for horses once I feel happy I am good enough. Glad you enjoyed it x
@@teacupasmr.x5598 Look closely at other needle felted horse's heads, the eyes are at the side but facing forward and you build up above the eye, the face actually has a thin nasal bone down the middle, look at the cheek bone and try and chisel it on the side of the face, the nostrils are like tear drops. Practice is the only way to improve but good luck. If you get stuck join a Facebook group for horses (there are about three) and post your picture, I have seen one of the ladies draw on a photo to show where the horses head could be changed, quite helpful x
@@teacupasmr.x5598 I know the feeling, I have worked and owned horses too for most of my life but yet it is still tricky to do a head, I think it is about really looking, I have my daughter's Schleich toy horse with me too so I can see how they have modeled the face x
Hello! Thank you for making an amazing video!! I was wondering a few things, #1 how long would this take a beginner to make? #2 I really want to try to make this, but I am just a beginner. any tips? #3 how many days did this take you? I would have three weeks to complete this, because it is for a school assignment. #4 do you think I could make this a llama? Thanks!
Hi, This one took me well over 10 hours over at least 5 days as I can't needle felt all day, have to rest your hands. You could certainly make it in three weeks and the only way to know is to just do it. Try and find a model horse or photo and keep that in front of you checking the proportions as you go. Watch my keeping legs thin as starting thin really helps. It may take a while first time round and you need the base to be fairly firm plus look at my wire armature video too as it definitely needs wire. A lama is probably easier and a better shape to start with. I hope you give it a go and you always improve with each felt. I will be doing an online course in the new year for horses so if you get the bug then I will explain in great detail how I make my horses in those video's. Thanks for watching and good luck x
So talented ..your art is amazing looks so realistic and expensive..... is it an expensive hobby .. wish I had the money to buy one because they so beautiful and well Hand crafted .. , from Mrs Williams xx
The expenses really depend on how often you felt and what you felt. 1 oz of wool roving can last me a while but my sculptures arent nearly as large as hers. The wool is usually the priciest point as you can get some cheap wire from craft stores.
You simply need a needle, a mat and some wool to start. Starter kits are about £15, my first kit was for three little dogs and it was not much. The wool for simple makes is not too bad but you do need a lot of time and that's why needle felted items can be expensive to buy. You can easily make a sheep or highland cow from my video's with Shetland carded wool for about £10 total but be warned, it's addictive! x
Hi, thanks for your kind words, I will do a horse tutorial soon but they take so long to make it will have to be in several parts, glad you enjoyed it.
I would love to make a unicorn for my forest. are you making one soon or a horse in full video? You are a great artist.. I love your horses and your other vids ty for those xxx How did you learn this? Just curious..
Hi, self taught, RUclips, books etc, yes to horse video but not for another month, commissions get in the way, really glad you like my videos, very kind of you x
@@feltsbyphilippa Yes i can't wait for the horse video to learn how to make one.. But for now i am trying myself, just hope it will look like one :) Never made a horse before i did other animals but a horse hmmm idk if i can pull that off.. i do needlefelt a few years now.. and i have all the stuff i need to make one. so i am forcing myself to give it a try.. wish me luck xx

Hi, You are very kind, thank you! I have an Etsy shop called "Felts by Philippa" and this is a custom horse for £79.50. Horses takes ages to do so you have to charge a fair bit to cover your hours. I am going to do another horse time lapse of an Exmoor pony this month with much better quality recording and in time I will do an online course. Watch this space, I have so many video's to film and get out as I love doing what I do and needle felting is becoming really popular. Really appreciate your comments, thanks! Philippa
I don't know you can learn when it is so fast!
This is just a time lapse not a teaching video, it would be about 20 hours long for teaching 😀x
This is beautiful work! I would also be interested in seeing a more detailed tutorial, specifically, the armature development.
