HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR BROCCOLI HARVEST BY GETTING THE MOST SIDE SHOOTS

  • Get tips for raised bed garden-grown broccoli with more side shoots. Organic homegrown broccoli doesn't end when you harvest the crown. Learn how to harvest broccoli and the side shoots for maximum production. I've been growing vegetables year-round in Austin, Texas for over ten years. When I plant broccoli in the fall I'm able to get multiple harvests of the tender side shoots into early spring. Broccoli is great roasted in the oven with garlic or prepared in a cured salad. If you have a surplus of homegrown broccoli try blanching and freezing.

    When cutting broccoli head, its wise to cut at an angle above the side shoots. Keeps rain water to roll off the plant.

      You can do it! The most common pests are caterpillars, followed by aphids. Observe the underside of the leaves regularly early in the morning, or after dark. You can remove caterpillars by hand or apply B.t. (bacillus thuringiensis). Aphids can be blasted off with water, or you can spray them with insecticidal soap. 👍✨

I was constantly putting cups of beer outside around my plants to keep the slugs away. I also used BT. I am not sure if that stuff is organic or not.. does anyone know? Is BT safe to spray on plants?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  6 месяцев назад

      I think it's best not to disturb the soil and I leave the roots. They will eventually be broken down by soil microbes and the broccoli stumps will come loose in following seasons. If you are growing other brassica varieties such as collards, kale, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and cabbage be aware that they will cross easily when saving seed unless isolated by distance, time, or physical barriers.

    New subscriber. I love your enthusiasm. I've grown numerous vegetables but never broccoli. Would you recommend pruning any of the outer leaves like some people do for tomatoes or in your opinion would that be detrimental to the head and cause premature flowering? Also, do you eat the leaves too?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  4 года назад +6

      Hello! Thanks so much for watching! I will prune away some of the lower leaves of the broccoli plants if they turn yellow, otherwise I leave them be. All of those leaves are feeding roots through photosynthesis and I want the plant to grow as vigorously as possible. The healthier and more robust the plant, the healthier and more robust the head of broccoli.
      I do eat the leaves, they are sweet and delicious. Typically, I don't harvest any until the main broccoli head has been harvested.
      I hope all of that helps!

    I live in Oklahoma and I have yet to master growing my cauliflower cabbage and broccoli or weather fluctuates so much here finding the right time is difficult do you have any tips on you start your plant seeds indoors or plant your seedlings outside

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 года назад

      Hello! Check to see if there is a local county extension service that has a vegetable planting guide. Here in Austin I can begin setting out seedlings of cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli in mid-January and through the end of February. Those seeds need to be started indoors 8-10 weeks ahead of that target planting range, so that would be in the November-December range. You may also have a fall planting window and those seeds would be started indoors, likely in mid-July for mid-September planting. Try succession planting to hedge your bets with the weather, that is starting seeds indoors every two weeks or so for staggered planting within the target range for your area. I hope that helps! 🥦✨

      Hi Tom! In my Central Texas garden, my spring broccoli goes in by the end of February. Our last average frost date is around that time, and tender transplants may need protection. The stress of warmer weather can push them to flower rapidly. You may be able to go for a fall harvest by planting in late summer as the heat breaks.
