Never mind the fact that the Von Trapps were Austrian, not German. If anything, it would actually be more accurate to put said reference in Italy. Georg Von Trapp actually was eligible for Italian citizenship given that he was born in present day Italy.

Matter of fact Becks makes a beer only sold in the states called St. Pauli Girl (the packaging is Bavarian themed and would be laughed out of Germany if it was displayed there) .I know of no place that imports Augustiner kegs... especially Maximator ( I had in Munich Starkbierfest Spring 2012)

Very diplomatic answer from the German girl about her costume. As an employee, you don't want to piss off The Mouse. Showing my age, but back before the internet we went to Epcot as kid in the 1980s and we learned that the Epcot workers were a very presitgious job for young Europeans. Many of them loved being in Florida and liiving and working in FL on work permiits. I don't know if it holds as much prestige now that. going to America to visit is a lot easier. Thanks for the tour of the updated Epcot.

I went to an interview/recruitment type of event in Munich in the 1980s, to fill a gap between school and university (and hoped for a nice experience), but backed out after I read the fine print in the contract. You have to be really desperate as a European to accept those working conditions.
And those Disney people who were there to hire staff? Seemed more like cult members looking for devote followers. Maybe that's just the American business culture, but for me it was quite annoying.

To explain the caramel, it's marketing. Werthers candy sponsors the German pavilion, and so their stuff is all over the place. It isn't supposed to be authentic to Germany. It's a branding deal. Kinda like product placement in a movie but in real life. All the pavilions at Epcot have sponsors, and even specific rides throughout Disney have sponsorship deals. It's a way for a brand to get their name seen in a place that has happy vibes and associates them with your happy memories of your vacation. In turn, Disney gets millions of dollars to fund the upkeep and expansion of the parks. It's actually brilliant marketing, but unfortunately, the reason why we aren't getting any more countries in Epcot. Brands aren't willing to shell out the millions of dollars it takes to build a new pavilion. The last new country was Morocco and the country itself sponsors the pavilion. They think of it as a way to encourage tourism.

When I lived in Florida, I worked for Disney IT. Used to go to Epcot every weekend and ate at the Biergarten many times. The beer selection used to be so much better. They used to have several selections from Hofbräu, Spaten, Radeberger, Paulaner and even had Dinkelacker at times. This was all before the pandemic however and the list to choose from is much smaller. The deserts used to all be like how the apfelstrudel was served. I always had a nice size piece of Schwarzwälder kirschtorte and strudel at the end. Shame to see it change so much but happy to see you enjoyed it for the most part.

The topic of "Germans and potato salad" reminds me of an episode from my time in the German Navy. When serving on board of a Destroyer one day, there was potato salad on the menu, but the Smutje (cooks) couldn't agree on one and so we had six different varieties of potato salad to choose from and one of them was warm - and all of them were very good.

As a former EPCOT cast member (20 years ago) who loves the German Pavilion, I really enjoyed your honest perspective. I laughed at the lack of a proper Weißbier Krug and the warm kartoffelsalat, but some accommodations must be made for the American populace I suppose. If the menu mistakenly offered a Kölschbier, it would certainly be served in ein Maß, haha. Visiting here in my youth enriched my desire to travel to Germany (which I have and love), so there is some value to this saccharine Disney version of the Alpine culture.

If I were to make a guess, I'd say that the warm potato salad (which I love) is based on Kartoffelsalat from German communities in the US (Amish, Pennsylvania Dutch, etc.) variations of the originals. Every type of beer had it's own glass and would get sent back when in the wrong one or it didn't have enough foam (crown) on top. Often we would have to drink it then. In the very western part at the Moselle River, they eat the potato salad warm as well. And the Epcot Wine selection ( yes I paused the video) is from the warm - potato salad - area as well. 😅Maybe one of the Epcot sommeliers,f&b Managers or Chefs had a connection.

I absolutely love chatting with the kids working at the various Epcot World Showcase pavilions, Germany in particular since I'm moderately conversant in German. Last time there, one of them saw my Werder Bremen jersey, and we spoke for several minutes about the team and Bundesliga soccer in general. It was nice that he appreciated an American trying to speak German, and that he switched to English when I started getting out of my depth.
There are a lot of Disney-focused channels on RUclips, I wonder if some of them would like to interview you about this foreigner-visiting-native-Epcot-pavilion angle.

I'm happy to hear your feelings about the German pavilion. As an American who lived in various regions of Germany for 13 years I found most of the food in the Biegarten to more of an Americanized version than the same foods I ate while in Germany. I've never been a fan of Becks and will agree that drinking Hefeweizen out of a mug is just wrong. My wife and I were annual passholders for many years and thus have been to EPCOT many times. I have found that they do rotate the Bier from time to time.

Going to the Germany pavillion when i was 12 was a pretty formative experience for me. When i went with my father, it was later in the evening and I remember it feeling more lively and a much bigger room than depicted here (probably because i was young?) In any case, I would attribute this experience with my later fascination and infatuation with german/bavarian culture. There was just something about it to me that was particularly visually striking compared to other european cultures. The lederhosen/dirndls, timber-framed architecture, cheerful music and sense of community and belonging. It may be an oversimplified vision of Germany, but it was enough to be a catalyst for my lifelong love and fascination with German culture and history.

Great Video - I've been here maybe 2 dozen times over 20+ years. I am of German heritage - and have been to Germany multiple times. I love the pavilion, but mostly the Biergarten. the nightime/fall setting is underrated. I've told my family to leave me here sometimes, but usually they stay. The band is the #1 reason to eat here. Its very fun and surprisingly one of the best interactions at any Epcot World Showcase pavilion. You usually get at least 1 full show during a seating - and maybe 1 and a half or two if you really stay long. I only go a couple liters of the Konig Weissbeer lately. - but over the years beers come and go. I can do 2 easily and have done 3 once. :) My son and I like to guess the state flags. My family most like the band as well, we have some great videos of the kids dancing as toddlers to the show....and love the pretzels (or pretzel buns I guess now) and the "beer cheese" - which isn't always available outside the Biergarten. The food overall is just OK - compared to some quality Northeast US German restaurants, but good enough! I could fill up on red cabbage, spaetlze, pretzels and beer and feel I got value from it. The gift shops have been gutted a bit, but still good. I got the pickle for our Christmas tree here, plus many other glass ornaments. The wine tasting inside the pavillion is underrated as well. The kids are grown up now, but looking forward to them sharing a "legal" beer with me soon. ;) Overall - I think all the pavilions have some stereotypes and are not perfect - but I am happy when I am there. p.s. There is a Germany Magicband if you are into that thing - You would have to buy second hand though like I did.

If you are still in Orlando then please try Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe in Sanford. It is on the northern end of Orlando and is run by a family that is first generation from Germany. Their shop is packed with items directly from Germany. I dated a server in the Epcot Biergarten for 5 years who was from Hamburg. When her family would come over that is where we would go. For dinner for sure but also the shopping. The band at the Biergarten is incredible. I was honored to attend a reunion they had. The gentleman playing the cowbells for you is one of the founders of the band. Old members came from all over to attend and play. The night with these people playing just for each other was amazing. They had 3 xylophones going at one time with 4 players moving in and out without skipping a beat. The talent that these folks have is amazing compared to what Disney lets them do. They take what do very seriously and try to be as authentic as possible. Many of them preform in different bands around the country during the Oktoberfest season. Your opinion about the food is a common one.

To be fair, if € 8.95 is the bottle price when buying it from the store (which isn't a cheap wine, you can get decent wine starting from about 4-5 €, at least if you are living in a wine region), you could expect the bottle to cost about 3 times as much in a German restaurant. The Schoppen (0.5 l) at the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (biggest German wine festival) costs around 8.50 €, so 17 € per litre, and those usually aren't wines that would be sold in the store at 8 € a bottle and they are from local vintners. $ 80 is still outrageous for a bottle of wine, but so is just about any price in Disneyland.

My wife and I went to Disney World 30+ years ago for our honeymoon. She had never been to Florida before, and the last time I was there, it was for a family trip to Miami Beach a year before Disney World opened, so I had always felt a little cheated. And yes, we spent a solid day at Epcot. About the year-round Oktoberfest: Obviously, Oktoberfest is something that Americans readily associate with Germany, so it's hardly surprising that Disney would make it part of any German-themed attraction. I don't know how many Americans have seasonal Oktoberfests where they live, and those who aren't so fortunate surely enjoy being able to get a taste of it at whatever time of year they happen to visit Epcot. The other reason it's presented year-round is most likely financial; Disney probably doesn't want to pay to keep their German exhibit up-to-date on a seasonal basis, especially considering that most visitors won't know the difference. I realize that to you, as a German, this is inauthentic, but remember, it's Disney, so it's not meant to be taken too seriously. From the sound of it, you felt that Germany was represented respectfully, even if they didn't get all the details right, and I think that's what's most important. I hope you had a great time!

I have not been to Epcot in over 25 years. I was in your home city, Munich for four days in August. I LOVE your hometown!! Yes, I did a lot of the "Tourist Things" but was able just to walk around and really enjoy the city for itself. For people who will not or cannot do international travel, this might be a way to give them a bit of the German "Lifestyle" and taste. But no were near as the real thing.
One of the best things was our visit to Hofbräuhaus. We found an unoccupied long table and sat down. Two young men ask if they could sit with us and we said, yes. Also, a couple ladies sat down with all of us. The guys were from Austria and the ladies were from Netherlands. Good conversation in English, a few beers and great food. I got up and ask our waiter to bring us 3 serving of apple strudel, served with the vanilla sauce. Plus a few more beers and add it to my bill.
The funny part is the waiter first look at me as "what do you want, I'm busy". Then glance at the table, then gave me a nod and a grim, yes.

You have to remember that it is very HOT in Florida for most of the year, so the costume needs to be relatively inexpensive for the employer (Disney), and as comfortable for the employees as possible. The heat also leads us to the ICE in drinks. With global warming, Europe will learn to have more ice in their drinks too. The food is designed to appease a North American Audience with kids in tow, with a German flavor. So the food will be blander, sweeter, and more American. I've been to EPCOT about five times in my life. It is not the best part of Disney in my opinion, but Walt Disney loved World's Fairs and this was his/their permanent version of a World's Fair. If it makes you feel better, I am from South Louisiana / New Orleans and generally whenever, we are depicted in American media or in food in other parts of the USA, they get it really wrong.

Thank you, Feli! That was really interesting hearing your opinion of the place. I was there about 35 years ago, and I brought my oma, originally from Oberkirchberg. My grandparents owned and operated a German-style deli in NYC for over 30 years. So there was no comparison on the food aspect, it was disappointing. There was no buffet style back then, so we ordered the sauerbraten, which was grandma’s specialty. But I think the buffet is a good idea, so the diners can get a sampling of the different types of food available. And I prefer the Spaten Oktoberfest!

It makes me somewhat sad thinking about this but also the reason your presentation is so loved.

My family has dined at the "Biergarten" @ EPCOT dozens and dozens of times since 1986. One year we were having so much fun, and many, many steins followed by a variety of schnapps. Might have stayed almost three hours LOL
The band members appear to have changed slightly. There also used to be female German dancers and the sets were more varied. The Christmas season is a really nice show. Spaten Oktoberfest Ur-Märzen was removed. Additionally, Spaten Optimator and then Beck's Dark were replaced by the Warsteiner Dunkel over the years (sad face). The buffet changes slightly as chefs and seasons change. There was a cold German potato salad option my last visit (December 2023)
    Prost!

I'm from Florida, 🌞all my family worked for The Disney theme parks and hotels, so I always got into all the theme parks for free because that's a perk he employees at Disney get, they only pay their employees minimum wage, so at least they let you get other family members or friends in for free. I had liked eating at Germany, Morocco, Italy, and Mexico when I was there. I always knew most so called international food are pretty Americanized, but it is nice to know some of the things they got right.
The only German potato salad I knew growing up was a vinegar one that was tangy, and later when I started dating a German girl. the potato salad she made for me when she was here really reminded me of American potato salads, not really all that different at all. But than she is from Duisberg so.

Yeah, potato salad is regional totally different... in the north it's mayonnaise based without the sourness of vinegar, whereas the south makes the potato salad just with vinegar and not with mayonnaise... and with many traditional recipes around the world... almost every family has there own holy recipe and it is often totally different in the taste and sometimes even ingredients than the recipe of the neighbours....

As far as the focus on Bavarian culture in America, on my last trip to Germany, I learned that there is a reason for this. When Germany was divided after WW2, Bavaria was in the American occupation zone. This is what returning GI's thought of when the thought of Germany. Also, the beer choices probably have more to do with what brands are marketed in the U.S., and who has the partnership with Disney. Beck's, being one of the major brands distributed in the U.S., is much more likely to make the cut that better German brands.
