The best version of "Death on the Nile". Angela Lansbury stole every scene that she was in. The music was gorgeous and the costumes fabulous and the actors brilliant, especially the older ones!
She was hysterical but so were Bette Davis and Maggie Smith.
@@jonathanmcvay4499 True, they played very well against each other.
In these days I cannot in an adequate way express my admiration for their fantastic performance in this movie.
@@litteliten4999 indeed. I am so tired of comic book movies. Very few good films are released. Knives Out was a good one and not the normal fare.
@@bovnycccoperalover3579 It wouldn't be fair to compare these actors against the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarznegger who have benefited from several more years of acting school enhancement. They are decent though. Lacking in skill and eloquence somewhat compared to Arnie and Sly but again, not fair to rank them against modern day actors
This version and Evil under the Sun with Maggie Smith are the best movies.
Yes. As well as the 1974 version of 'Murder on the Orient Express'. They make a wonderful trilogy.
Goodness, are you kidding me? This is literally the who’s who of Hollywood back in the days. There’s too much talent in this movie. I have to watch the whole thing.
Easily the best version of Death On the Nile. The cast is brilliant!
Right??
Very true!
I liked the David Suchet version better. I haven't seen the Brannagh version yet so I can't comment.
@@Makeyourselfbig that is a very good version as well, but Emily Blunt's acting was painful.
@@tophers3756 : No, political correctnes shit, and on a 1930s egyptian nile steamer young women in short pants? Hercule Poirot was a belgian policeman, no soldier, men, being about 50 yesrs and in army would have served in rear line, not frontline. In 1914 was no military use of Poison Gas, ...
Angela Lansbury is so memorable, I could watch her for hours on end. She is one of the most brilliant character actors who ever lived.
She is a wonderful actress!
You're so right. I watch her movies over and over again. This is certainly one of her best films, which I love. And what a stellar cast... Wonderful
RIP Angela Lansbury😢
That part is the best in the film, Angela Lansbury is fabulous
Indeed. Tom Bateman has nothing on her.
Still alive (96).
I love the way Poirot sensed the danger of being asked to dance by Salome Otterbourne, and snatched the opportunity to ask her daughter first. Poor Colonel Race was left to face the indignity instead.
This version is absolutely the real one. I love David Suchet as Poirot, but in this movie, Death on the Nile this version is that ONE, with Peter Ustinov. The rest of the cast is brilliant as well. Love this version, always.
It is literally my favorite movie of all time. I am a hardcore Agatha Christie fan. Love the shows based on her books but my favorites are the movies with Peter Ustinov and the TV shows with David Suchet. I have watched this version so many times that l know every line. I wish Kenneth Branagh had not remade it coz l don't like the new version or his remake of the Murder on the orient express. Am scared he is going to ruin Evil under the sun for me too coz l heard in an interview that it will be his next remake. I wish there is a digital copy of this version. Can't find it anywhere just the DVD.
I agree. They seemed to "save" Orient Express and Death on the NIle until very late in the series, and then - as much as I love Suchet in the role as the definitive Poirot - found both films very disappointing. This is indeed the best version.
@@MrAdwoa2003 Please watch the old Miss Marple movies with Joan Hicks as Marple. Christi herself said Hicks was her Miss Marple from the books.
Suchet's Death on the Nile is far closer to the book. The Ustinov version took many liberties with the book.
@@JWRogersPS and??? This movie is the Best version
The snake scene is a perfect example of having a suspenseful scene without any over-the-top music or sound effects.
Poor used creature 😪
Suchet will always be THE Poirot but this will always be the best version of Death on the Nile.
That’s your opinion
Fact ain't opinion @@hardsam68
Such brilliant performance by all the cast, Angela Lansbury is hilarious!
The fashion in this one is gorgeous. Can’t stop looking at Jackie’s dress at the Tango dance.
Angela as always enticing in capturing her characters … a legend forever !!!
This is one of my FAVORITE MOVIES. I love the Agatha Christi movies. This ALL STAR cast is just EXCELLENT.
Angela Lansbury is perfect in it
the new version is garbage
Love it when her head gets blown off the red goes with her outfit
@@mediterraneanworld haven't seen the new one, but judging from Murder on the Orient Express, that Poirot becomes "physically fit" by chasing and fighting others, it's really disappointing...
@@zaiaraujo you're right.. I watched it online, and to my surprise, the movie started with WW1 so I paused it cos I was so confused... and like any other movie that I watched, I didn't wanna read any synopsis/review first, cos it would spoil the fun... But this time, I was curious, so I opened the Wikipedia's page...and my comment, WTF...
#spoiler alert..
Young Poirot joined war, and he kept his mustache to cover his scar, and by the end of the movie, he shaved it???
@@hilman94 the new version, is actually better than what Branagh did to murder on the orient express, allowing the remaining cast to act more. Overall this version is still superior’s to the new one.
The 1978 version of DEATH ON THE NILE, was fabulous. Haven't seen 😕 the new version yet. As far as MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS goes, the 1974 film is magnificent.
I sat through "the horror-that-is" the latest Murder On The Orient Express, and it was ghastly. I stupidly started watching the new Death on the Nile afterwards, and only got about 40 minutes in: it is utter drivel, with an appalling script and no character development whatsoever. The highlight of the film, from what I can tell, is Jennifer Saunders godawful American accent, which was at the very least amusing.
@@janknuckey I haven’t seen the remake, but if it’s anything like the murder on the orient express remake, I totally have to agree. They did it no justice.
Let's put it this way the new Death on the Nile isn't as bad as Branagh's Orient Express. Stick with the original films in my opinion although Suchet's tv versions are closer to the books.
@@zaiaraujo Gosh yes. So, so awful. Especially Kenneth Branaugh as Poirot. I wish he will stop remaking them. Murder on the Orient express was not good either. Everything, the cast the acting were just awful.
@@MrAdwoa2003 It's the Agatha Christie Estate that encourages the remakes on her stories. They get more $$ each time an old story is retold and reshot with a new cast. I like Kenneth Branagh as the best POIROT. The others are too fake and quirky. But this is the better version of the Nile story.
This, the original 1978 version is untouchable and with a stellar cast including Bette Davis and Maggie Smith make it complete. Any attempts for a remake should be abandoned. I think Ustinov here is perfect as Poroit!
You were about two months too late on that one. I saw the Kenneth Branagh one, and that was also very good.
This is SO much better then the latest version!
so true. My favorite version. I also loved the David Suchet version.
Latest version was a complete snooze fest.
My favorite as well! Love these actors and the girl that plays the rich girl is beautiful compared to other actresses playing this part in newer versions.
This is the very best version! I’ve watched it so many times and I never get tired of watching it.
The new remake is OK. Especially from a cinematography point of view. But this version is still the best.
I really enjoy watching this film Angela lansburny was very funny and fantastic in this movie
What a masterpiece and what legends these actors were.
Both portrayals of this character by the exquisite Angela Lansbury and the indomitable Frances D’laTour, Absolutely the best performances ever! So funny!
This version is so much better than the current remake. Not because it follows the author's book more closely but because it has humor and panache that Branaugh isn't interested in. Sections of this version were shot in Egypt ( a fact that Bette Davis complained bitterly as she was used to shooting most of her great films in Burbank) which the new version omits and uses DGI. Ustinov may not be the ideal Poirot but he is leagues closer to it than Branaugh.
@@zaiaraujo Branagh gives the impression he's just fulfilling a childhood dream to be Poirot at all costs - he's directing the movies and casting himself as Poirot. Unless he develops his own unique take on the role, the movies will always fall short of Suchet's versions, and indeed even more classic interpretations, regardless of how big his budget is in terms of effects and supporting cast. I just can't stop feeling that it's just his hubris which we are being forced to watch.
@@zaiaraujo For me too. I ain't able to watch his version. Horrible.
Agatha Christie didn’t write the book as a comedy. I think that she would be mortified to see all the camp performances.
@@zaiaraujo I love Kenneth Branagh’s version. Saw it last week.
This is so much better than the most recent remake. So much talent in this movie!
Totally! You cannot even compare both versions!
@@heloisachaves8414 Ustinov plays such a great Poirot.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere he does! I am now actually looking for other movies where he plays Poirot- such a great actor 😀
@@heloisachaves8414 Ignore that first sentence (and RUclips REFUSED to let me edit that line).
This has got to be the most star studded cast ever to appear in an Agatha Christie film. Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith, Peter Ustinov, David Niven. It really is just a joy to watch them spar with each other.
This older version is better than the new one! I also prefer the old legends and it was so much funnier too!
It’s not meant to be FUNNY!!!
Then there’s a big problem with it.
Peter Ustinov was my Poirot. Much as I enjoyed David Suchet and television production. These films of his are delightful.
Peter Ustinov is wonderful in everything he's in.
Hands down the best version!
What a wonderful movie. Great actors. Great costumes Great scenarios, and an Agatha Christie huge novel.
Such a great film. Many wonderful performances. Angela Lansbury & David Niven’s tango is legend.
Angela Lansbury nailed this version. So funny. I'd forgotten that scene with the snake. I would definitely demand a refund.
shes a queen
Simon MacCorkindale was sooo handsome 😍
He was married to Susan George but died very young in her arms, so sad.
This 1978 version of Death on the Nile is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I really have no desire to see the new version.
Better than the latest joke of a movie..hands down!
The newest one is disaster
it is SO stagey, camp & theatrical, and EVERY single actor is showing up for it and delivering...👏👏👏
Ustinov played Poirot for laughs, I am not certain where Branagh thought he was doing. For all of the humor, Ustinov was true to Christie's vision
I think Christie meant for Poirot to be laughed at sometimes, and Poirot himself says that he chooses to play the buffoon for strategic purposes.
The better version by far! Davis, Lansbury, Smith and Mia Farrow very underrated in her role as well. Angela Lansbury won Best Supporting Actress from National Board of Review for this film.
Masterpiece! The best DOTN!
The scenery and costumes are wonderful!
The dance scene is hilarious
I adore the costuming in this movie so much!! All the formal attire in that first scene is gorgeous-i love the daughter's almost fairytale dress the most, but i also like how much personality you can infer from the mother's gaudy outfit & linnet's racy dress (I also LOVE miss bower's masculine style of dress, it definitely sets her apart from the upper class women). Poirot's white suit looks looks fantastic on him, making him look very classy. This movie definitely deserved that academy award for costume design, the costuming is certainly one of my favorites in any movie!
I love this film! but the version with David Suchet as Poirot is also splendid and magnificent! It's not so funny, perhaps a bit melancholic, but very very good! And it is closer to the original.
Suchet is the best Poirot I believe
You either play it as a Noël Coward drawing room comedy or a serious mystery with a couple of funny lines here and there. Both have their good points. The tango scene is wonderful. Poor David Niven! Lansbury was hilarious and McCorkindale was so gorgeous. It is so sad that, like Patrick Swayze, for example, he died so young.
Wow! Hercule Poirot and Jessica Fletcher together!
Kenneth Branaugh’s version is good but no one can top Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, and Angela Lansbury in this one. Edit: I’ve just rewatched the Branaugh version. The ridiculous teaser at the end for Death On The Nile doesn’t make any sense with the subsequent movie at all.
They even mixed the themes of the two scorned women by the same man. One was the sun, the other was the moon. Guess which character wore the silver dress when they were the sun??
So much better than the 2022 version
Best movie with the best cast!
Definitely the superior version. Amazing cast, breathtaking costumes and scenes with real suspense.
unforgettable , iconic version !
The very best of escapism back to a totally different world that I think I would have loved!! This is superb film with an outstanding cast xx
7:51 - Angela Lansbury is such a fine actress! She can play a gracious small town detective, a flamboyant drunk or a true villainess, all with equal believability!
She and Tim Curry can be terrifying villians when given a good role to chew on.
THE MOST STUNNING FILM MUSIC EVER! (ALONG WITH L of A);
BRILLIANT CAST and PERFORMANCES!
WONDERFUL SCENERY (where did that come from? 🤔🧐😂);
Angela Lansbury's headdress steals the show- as does her heartbreaking, real performance!😢😢
- THIS DOES FABULOUS JUSTICE TO AGATHA!
All Agatha Christies Movies with Ustinov are superb and the cast also. Ustinov was multilingual so for example he dubbed himself in all the german episodes.

Gran peli 💯 Un reparto de actores 💯 y Angela Lansbury 💯💯💯💯
Extraño a Peter Ustinov 💖
To bylo nejlepší zpracování jaké jsem kdy viděl.
what a beautiful movie , like a visit to a museum.
Love this movie, great stars at their hammiest best!
You can tell Angela Lansbury is having a blast. And her dramatic mish-mash period costumes are excellent.
@@tophers3756 I think they all were. Maggie Smith lol...Bette Davis...what a cast
I haven't seen this since I was a kid. I remember loving this movie. After watching these clips though, I didn't remember how comical and silly it was. Don't get me wrong, still miles better than the newest one.
It was Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express that really upset me. One of my favorite stories, and the film looked amazing, but the script was terrible. Kenneth is a great actor, but totally wrong for Poirot.
Best version! Ever!! And the costumes were 👌🏻
Yes, the new version also has a cast of known actresses/actors, but the cast in the old version was of another level, and it really shows. With a large cast it is always difficult to give everyone a chance to find their place on the stage, but when you have people like Lansbury, Niven, Farrow... that isn't a problem. I absolutely adore Mia Farrow in this one, she gives Jacky so much personality, she steals every scene she is in with that face showing all those conflicting emotions... amazing. And though I really like Emma Mackey who plays Jacky in the new version, she is completely miscast. I also do not like what Branagh did with Poirot, I did not like it in Oriënt Express and I like it even less in Nile. Branagh wants to create a Poirot for the modern audiences, because he believes modern audiences will not like Agatha's Poirot, and that is so insulting. The scene with the snake is a beautiful example: Ustinov's Poirot is startled, but uses his little grey cells and solves the problem without becoming something he is not, Branagh's Poirot probably would have solved the problem himself without help and becoming super-Poirot. I love Suchet in the role, I love Ustinov in the role, and I did not mind Finney either, they stayed true to the character, but Branagh... It is like they would do a reboot of Columbo and take away his grey raincoat, his car, his references to his wife, and put in a few action-scenes in every episode. Some things do not need a modern makeover, I have no problem with bringing the books of Agatha Christie to the big and small screen, but I have a problem with over-adapting them for modern audiences. Downton Abbey worked perfectly for many seasons, the first seasons of The Crown worked perfectly, and so many other shows set in early 20th century work perfectly without a need to 'modernise' them, so why not give the same courtesy to Agatha's works set in these times. But the problem is that a lot of the modern audiences do not know the books, do not know the series with Suchet, do not know the movies with Ustinov, and those audiences do not compare; they are impressed by the cast of the movie and the modern take on it. Sherlock Holmes has been modernized in Elementary, Sherlock and Sherlock Holmes and both series and movies did very well, but though I liked some of the stories (the creators of the series also wisely decided to set the shows in a modern era), I never saw these modern Sherlocks as Sherlock Holmes, just as detectives who happen to have the same name as the character of Doyle. I think the Robert Downey-movies (set in the era of the books) inspired Branagh for his Poirot-movies, but where the Robert Downey-movies obviously were a bit of parody, Branagh still wanted to stay true to the original stories, and you just cannot have it both ways.
Really like this version.
I wish this would had been a series. So brilliantly done!
We need this one released, I will buy it day one. The newest one was trash. The people, the music, the sets, and everything just clicked together. I would agree with others that, all things being equal the only other version of this is the tv film but this will always be the gold standard by which others are judged.
Wait Angela Lansbury is in this?! Omg I must watch!
As Salome Outerbourne
Oh you absolutely must. It’s by far the best.
It's an all star movie: Maggie Smith, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Peter Ustinov. The whole movie is full of Oscar winners and it shows.
Angela, Bette and Maggie stole this movie, tbh. Everyone was great, even though Ustinov is an odd casting for Poirot, but this cast was golden.
Think you forgot Mia Farrow there.
@@robin231176 Sure, Mia Farrow does a brilliant job, but among the performances you remember, it's not her. Sometimes small roles with a few juicy lines can steal a film.
His silhouette might not be very "Pouaro "like but his talent!!!!!!!!!! it was something else altogether......
Angela Lansbury is the down-to-earth logical JB Fletcher while in Death on the Nile she is the loose flamboyant alocholic writer...she portrays both opposite roles well! Her drunken scenes remind me of Mrs Slocom of the British comedy, Are You Being Served?...hilarious.
Sono scene da OSCAR per tutto il cast e per il regista!!!!!
My favourite Agatha Christie movie is Evil Under The Sun with Peter Ustinov,Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg
In my ideal world, Angela Lansbury won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress this year and, although I'm glad for Maggie Smith winning for California Suite that year, I'd have her winning for Gosford Park.
Agreed. But besides the supporting Oscar for "Gosford Park", Maggie deserves another one for "The V.I.P.s". In my world, Maggie and Margaret Rutherford tied for best supporting actress of 1963.
Love Peter Ustinov! Favourite Poirot
Absolutely right, Brenda. One always feels that David Suchet is trying too hard. Ustinov is always so likeable.
i love the look on David Nivens face as she grabs him for the tango!!!
For some reason the musical score and the overt dramatic gestures remind me of the Aadams family movies,,, which I also thought were divine.
Esses maravilhosos atores!
Gratidão, pela contribuição e talento.

Great classic cast!!! Legends!
They killed Mrs. Potts!? Damn the person who pulled the trigger!
Peter Ustinov was the best Hercule Poirot!😀
He potreit Poirot's sense of humor is perfect!

A high second for me, David Suchet still steals the top spot.
Priceless!

Wow...what a fabulous cast!!!
The best vision costume is amazing beautiful brilliant stunning ❤❤❤
Fabulous
David Suchet still is the best Poirot. Nothing can ever beat him. Though i love this as well equally !
I didn’t realize this movie was a comedy too lol
It's NOT a comedy (lol?). It's an adaptation that has some humor in it, much like the David Suchet adaptations of Poirot's stories.
Muchas gracias , maravilloso
peter is the best poirot. he seems teh most natural. his costume his mustache etc is just all natural. the way he speaks doesn't sound like some forced french accent.
The actress who played Linnett Ridgeway in the 1978 version was in an episode of MURDER SHE WROTE AND A BOND GIRL in MOONRAKER. LOIS CHILES.
I absolutely love this movie!!!
Still the best version!
David Niven brilliant performer
Peter was perfect as Poirot!! Albert Finney was completely miscast in the 1974 film.
The snake scene is epic
Brilliant!
While I love the 2021 version this is by far my favorite. Mia Farrow is exquisite. She just shines.
How looks can be deceiving... Even an old Jewish fox like Woody fell for it. Ciao
She likes look a scarecrow.
Very enjoyable movie. A refreshing rewatch after Brannaghs abomination
I love the gold dress Miss Farrow wears in the TANGO Scene.
You can still tell that Lansbury was a beauty.
I love this campier, funnier version than all the attempts at seriousness now. The premise is too ridiculous for contemporary audiences to take seriously now. Better to treat it as a high camp comedy as you have here. The recent versions do not work as movies, because they are not mysterious or suspenseful, just a bunch of overdone dramatics that you cannot really believe in.
Maybe its because Poirot tends to treat everything as his Stage, but I never felt like Agatha Christies Books where very dark.
Tomsome extend maybe, but they mostly pretty tame and a bit silly.
The new version has its campy moments-the scene in the hotel/bar where they all run gleefully like carefree children of the night…Mrs. Van Schuyler thinks she’s contracted malaria…outing Mrs. Van Schuyler and Bowers as a couple…the British accents that come and go…
