I gave your name to my son for his middle name. It does me no end of good to see him grow and take with him the ideals and attitudes that I would have hoped. He also adores your music. Now, 15, he plays guitar and thinks my taste in music and my own songwriting is not so bad. Your music means so much to me, James. I am proud that my son has turned out to be such an amazing human and also has such an appreciation for art such as yours. The chain is active, James. Good souls beget good souls. ILY.
I'm two weeks away from attending my 14th James Taylor concert. I'm thrilled he's still touring reassuring us, "That's Why I'm Here." James, his guitar, his music, and a few hundred strangers who quickly become friends . . . what a way to spend an evening!
cathey shaw Believe me I know the feeling. I sit there in his audience at EVERY show amazed that I am actually seeing and hearing this music legend, this storyteller live!
Profound changes in one's enviornment often give way to new songs. The Bee Gees had sensory overload when they arrived in New York for the first time and were looking at maps with the names of the different places in that part of the U.S. They seized upon the name of Massachusetts and began writing some verses associated with that state. They came up with the song Massachusetts and wanted The Seekers to record it. For a number of reasons, the members of The Seekers didn't find out about this and the Bee Gees went ahead and recorded it themselves in 67. The Beatles had written a song for Helen Shapiro and her manager turned it down on her behalf without even telling her about the song offer. I'm not sure the same thing happened with The Seekers and the song Massachusetts. When the late Dusty Springfield first arrived in New York, she was overwhelmed as well and heard a song on the radio for the first time and decided that pop music just like it was what she wanted to pursue. She was headed to Nashville, but changed her mind just because of being in New York and hearing that song. The genesis of the song White Bird by It's A Beautiful Day was their being cooped up in an attic in Seattle and not being able to get out because the weather was so wet and miserable and their draconian manager had them on meager rations.
Just got a DVD/CD of his concert with Carole King. He is very much a gift of God to humanity. I am just happy to belong to a generation span that's witness to Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Andre Agassi, Tiger Woods, Manny Pacquiao, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Don Mclean, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Carole King, Ayn Rand, Bill Clinton, Mother Theresa, Larry King and Nelson Mandela.
These stories of the context and the genesis of a song and how it is written is so worthwhile to document. I bought your album when it first came out and enjoyed it immensely. You have a good curiosity about how songs are written and, in your interview about John Lennon, were curious about how much of the Lennon/McCartney songs were inspired and written by each individual. The decade of the 70's became evidence for that. Paul and Linda SMOKED John and Yoko the entire decade of the 70's. RAM was undeniable evidence that Paul had been the melodic and lyrical superstructure of The Beatles. John woke up and returned to writing music for the sake of music like Paul always had, but John was killed shortly after he had regained his musical bearings.
I've always wondered what the reference was to "Sweet baby James," in his song, _Mexico._ I think it may come up in other songs, too, but I can't remember any at the moment.
Growing up the relatives away from my immediate family weren't friends or close either. Funny how we see people and their actions as we age. Strange just like Sweer Baby James..
Thanks for being a great person and so friendly! My dream came true to sing with you, though it isnt the songs I'd love to sing with you, but it turned out to be a gift to be able to give to some friends! Check out my site to see the clips I hope that I get a chance to sing one of your songs with you someday!
A funny story about the Apple label you first recorded on. Crosby, Stills, and Nash auditioned their material for George Harrison in hopes of getting the nod from George to record it on the Apple label. George didn't like it all that much and denied them the permission to record it on Apple. Another record label denied them as well before they finally found one that would record their material.

It's a lovely lullaby, which I sang to my friends son when I rocked him to sleep. It worked every time. He's 28 now and doesn't need it anymore. 😊❤

Love, love, love JT. Always have, always will.
Love hearing what something means by the person that created it.
