I was a student in Plymouth in the 1980s and used to admire Lenkiewicz' wonderful paintings when I walked through the Barbican. Sadly, Wikipedia reports that he died in 2002 at the age of just 60, with 12 pounds in cash, having never opened a bank account. The embalmed body of Diogenes was found in his home (no suggestion of anything untoward having happened - Diogenes was eventually laid to rest 20 years later).
These are the local heros we need these days. The presenter walked through that archway into that Barbican 'council flats' area and there was something like Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. In the video above there he is as a youngish man and in 2002 ROBERT LENKIEWICZ sadly died; life is short, make the best of it and make a difference, make a point if need be.
A "doss house" (7:35). A term I haven't heard used for many years. Admittedly, I probably heard it from my mum, when she looked at my bedroom. ie. "This room looks like a.."
A dosser is someone who messes about and doesn't do what they're supposed to do, also 'dossing around' I heard as a kid / teen for when we just mucked about outside with no pre-determined organized activity. True though, I haven't heard the word been used since the mid-1990s.
It is and I'm surprised that only know having been a kid in the 80s and thought to myself being 'reasonably up on culture and art in the UK' that I've only just heard of this artist and his story.
The speed at which he drew is incredible (at least to me, not an artist); depicting what he was seeing on canvas seems to have been as easy as talking to express his thoughts.
An incredible talent! A man who also lived by his principles and actually helped people, not like the "celebs" such as Lineker that just virtue signal!
From Wikipedia: "When Lenkiewicz died in 2002, he left behind a particularly macabre legacy as the embalmed body of one of his friends, a tramp named Diogenes, was found in the cupboard section at the bottom of a bookcase..."
It was especially built to home Diogenes in the library, largest private collection of books in Britain. Before that he was in a chest at the end of his bed.

Growing up in 70s uk and now living abroad i love to watch these things, they mean so much, best wishes to everyone.
Not just a remarkable artist but a revolutionary and philosopher.
Well said 👌

@@davedogge2280 Interesting, thanks. 👍
An incredible story.

He painted Billy Connolly 😊 it was shown on Billy's series World Tour Of England, Ireland and Wales.

Thank you for this, really enjoyed it, and enjoyed Roberts work.
Incredible story
This is the much superior grandfather of modern hipster murals in 'gentrified' neighbourhoods. Genuine people's art!

To see the condition of Robert's wonderful mural today AUG 2023 is heartbreaking and a disgrace to PLYMOUTH.

Beautiful work!
it's crazy because many artists would love to be able to earn money even at those rates, today!!!....🖋🖋🎭🎭🎨🎨🖼🖼🎸🎸🎸🎸🪕🪕🎻🎻🎹🎹📕📕
