Would have been nice to know if the ?? operator actually returns a value to use or whether it mutates the given variable to the assigned value.

@@Codemycom Is nummy being mutated from null to '0', or are you effectively saying you can write: var newvar = nummy ?? '0'; and newvar is set to zero when nummy is null and nummy remains null.
