So, I've been wanting to carve wooden figures for months nearly a year already, but I wasn't sure how to start. Watching this video, at 2 in the morning. Gave me the biggest inspiration, I am ready to put weeks, months, and even years of hard work into this skill.

I felt inspired after having done a decent pumpkin carve this halloween after accidentally doing this that you're doing 05:26 but as i know from many works. Pumpkins rot and get soggy over time. Now i feel like trying out these more delicate moves on wood. Thanks for the extra tips in the video!
My grandfather carved wood, he did it so beautifully, sadly he has alzheimers now and cant get out of bed. Wood carving has been an interest of mine for a while, I remember carefully wiping his sculptures from any dust when I was little. This is such a beautiful hobby, it connects you to nature, and how we, as people used to be. Thank you

They are a hard wood tree, so it would require a very sharp and sturdy knife to carve something from that. I know its a old post and you probably figured it out, but ah well.

i just carved my first walking stick it came out fair and im proud of it but there is room for improvement of course. i didnt watch any carving vide0s till now and i learned that i used all unsafe and thumbs down moves to make my stick lucky i got my fingers still thanks for the video now im into two kinds of beaver crafts

I mean you can first start with only a regular pocket knife like an Opinel for 9$ then if you are really into it but some more tools. Also you can go for second hand tools as old tools are often been taken care of and not used for long years. Just need a sharpening and it is as good as a new one
Your safety tape is the same as vet-wrap, for bandaging animals! That's such a clever use for it, I never would have thought of it. Haha Great price, too!
I wish i saw this video for the finger wrap idea years ago. My first time cutting with actual tools, i coughed and ended up cutting my pointer finger down to the bone and was sitting at the ER with the tool stuck in the bone.

I've been carving on branches and driftwood I picked up from the beach, the driftwood is easier to work with, fresh branches are a little tougher. I will get basswood when I can do something decent on the scrapwood, I don't want to waste money.

Try to follow these steps: 1) Sand the wood with a palm sander and 80-grit sandpaper to smooth out the wood overall. 2) Change the sandpaper to a finer grit, such as 120, to further smooth the wood. 3) Use a putty knife to fill any nail holes or cracks you don't want to show with wood filler. 4) Select a finish that you prefer for your katana handle.
