ABOUT BROOKLYN NINE-NINE
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" follows the exploits of hilarious Det. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and his stoically ever-professional captain, Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), along with their diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD's 99th Precinct. In this final season of the series, Jake and the squad must try to balance their personal lives and their professional lives over the course of a very difficult year.
Rounding out the ensemble is Sgt. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumera), who has a passion for organization and a weakness for dork dancing; Lt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), a mountain of a man whose most powerful muscle is his sweetheart; Jake's best friend and human puppy dog, Det. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio); and the incredibly secretive, tough-as-nails Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Also part of the Nine-Nine are veteran officers Det. Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) and Det. Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker), whose only skill as police officers is their ability to make a passable pot of coffee.
Created by Emmy Award-winning writer/producers Dan Goor and Michael Schur, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" won the 2014 Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical (Samberg). Emmy winner Braugher earned four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Capt. Holt.

nah i think the story line dictates that the only time she laughs is when she meets the Uber driver, otherwise the whole interaction "is that your laugh?" doesn't make sense

This isn’t the actress breaking character, it’s ROSA slipping character while constantly trying to hide she has human feelings

It is, but the laugh was not of Rosa's, but Stephanie's - hence why it was counted as breaking character (which doesn't mean bad at all)

Not really. There have been several times when Rosa has laughed at other people in pain or getting their just punishment. She smiled when Holt told Peralta he was going to break him (with the special high fives)

I love me some Rosa clips but none of these were her breaking character. She can smile, on her terms, like a badass

The second one definitely was, you can see her trying to recompose herself while nobody else is laughing.

I love how there's an entire episode about how Rosa doesn't smile but we see her smiling pretty often throughout the show actually
In a way, Stephanie breaking character from Rosa still works because I can imagine in all three scenarios, Rosa genuinely wants to laugh out of pure mockery at either Holt (for stepping of "his" character to play a guessing game), Jake (for thinking he's actually tricking those in the main office) or Boyle (for just getting hurt for the umpteenth time).
That second one was defs intentional. She goes back to being stone-faced as soon as Jake opens the door; because she’s helping him to put on an act. Defs just a character choice.
I’m convinced Amy knew she would be late and called Holt to tell him why. Holt decided to play and made her tell everyone where she was because he already knew the answer and wanted to show up the squad.

I remember the episode where amy and rosa were chasing after a guy they've been after for years, and Amy jumped off a roof or something and dislocated her knee. In that episode towards the end when Rosa was chasing the guy while Amy was waiting by the exit with her crutch, Amy had knocked the guy down but in the back i could see that Rosa/Stephanie Beatriz stopped to quick and her ankle had twisted. In the next cut of that scene, I noticed her face of pain. I'm pretty sure that could also be considered a scene where she sorta broke character.

She's so gorgeous and I love the detective version of April Luggate. Her breaking character is adorable.
Am i the only one that thought the first one doesn't count? She just smiled and wiped her nose that's completely believable for rosa to do, especially since she finds jake funny and smiles and even LAUGHS when he's goofing around 🤷♂️
The last two don't really seem out of character xD just Rosa's sadistic side (exspecially the last one)

Rosa does a lot of smiling and smirking in season 1, so it’s interesting to see the writers slowly make her more and more opaque with her personality as the seasons go on.
I’d noticed the first two before but not the third one - great spot! Someone else said how good the acting was and in I 💯 agree

I've had two yamaha cruisers. One being the virago 750. I had a suzuki m109r too which was fast asf. I've now dropped down to an 865cc triumph america and I don't miss the power.
It was somewhat in character for her to smile at Jake yelling. She does enjoy his antics every now and then like when he won the best against Amy and she started dancing in the background.

Is this really Stephanie breaking character or is it just Rosa laughing? Rosa does laugh sometimes, even when Stephanie is in character.
I'd argue that none of these are out of character. Rosa often laughs at Jake's jokes, so it makes sense that she would be laughing during the first two. The third one is a little more debattable, but Rosa would still be laughing if Boyle got hurt.

all of these track for her character though. first one, she smirks at jake bc of holt wanting to join their game. the second one, shes smiling bc of jakes antics and purposely drops the smile when he opens the door to keep up the cover. it was intentional. the 3rd one just makes sense like. boyle got hurt by gina. ofc rosa will chuckle lmao

You’re missing a scene. In Season 5 Episode 6, there was a briefing on missing Sgt. Peanut Butter, the horse. Boyle considers Peanut Butter as his nemesis, and Terry said that his kids loved that horse in which Boyle replied “Well, your kids needs help wiping their butt Sarge, they’re not exactly geniuses.” You can see Rosa was holding her laugh and covering her smile with her hand….

Pretty sure the second clip is in-character. Not a break. Jake is being silly. It's funny and a bittersweet moment. She also immediately stops when the door opens, showing she needs to hide that it's a silly moment from the bullpen.
