    HA and Node-RED are very powerfull tools to perform energy savings. For example at my home: when i have sufficient solar production, Node-red will detect this and will start my washing machine. When we are leaving the house, it shut down all the lamps, powerplugs,... (and turns then back up when we are comming home). powerplugs are getting shutted down when we go to sleep,... and this all with HA and Node-Red

    I use Home Assistant to check the forecast for the day at 5am. If it's going to be above 15 degrees, then the heating is disabled until 4pm. At this point it checks the internal temp of the house and re-enables if below 20 degrees. Works wonders in Spring when we have cold nights and occasional warmer days

    Couple questions:
    - how to you power down the computer (smart socket? sounds a bit brutal... Some remote shutdown method?);
    - What's the website you use to compute the cost of a device?
    I have a power socket with energy monitoring, which controls my "media center" (tv, apple tv, couple of home pods, dvd player). When the system is idle for more that 15mn, it just cuts the power completely. It'll come back on in late afternoon ready for evening viewing, or explicitly with an smart button (easier to access than the smart plug's button)
    One thing I'd like to have is a calculation of how much power these smart devices are using. Every smart socket or smart bulb will drain a little even if not on. That must add up also. I suppose it's not that hard to compute since they are on 24/7 and power usage is usually documented. But I guess I could compute things like: this bulb was on for x minutes today, and on idle the rest of the time, so this is how much it will have consumed today...

    @macartanmcquaid22 2 года назад

    Another good video 👍🏻
    One thing I've been looking for but haven't found yet is a smart wall socket or smart plug that knows to shut itself off when anything connected to it isn't using power.
    I've tried to implement something in HA where if the charging percentage on my phone reaches 100% that I turn off the socket.
    The problem here is that I can never know if anything else is also currently plugged into that socket that is still needing to use power or in fact know which socket my phone is actually plugged into.
    I'd love a device that would know itself that if it's on idle to simply shut itself off when everything is fully charged...

    On separately heating rooms: This sounds like an excellent idea at first blush, but, if one has rooms that are interconnected (rather than closed off by doors) then a room that is heated will, to some extent also heat those rooms nearby that are not being heated. So, there's a point where separate heating will have diminishing returns. That point comes more quickly if your home is poorly insulated, if you leave a window open, etc.
    Otherwise, I completely agree with the ideas.
    In fact, I also have outside lights in my back yard that are only on when the outside light drops below a particular level and then only if motion is sensed in the yard. (I do have a way to switch them on for when we have company over on the deck, but that's also on a timer so it shuts off if I forget to do so myself.)
    For security purposes, I have a simulated presence add-on (to Home Assistant) that mimics the use of our lights as if we were home when we're away for long periods of time. That's a lot better than simply leaving a light on or just plugging it into a manual timer.

    • @teunvl95
      @teunvl95 2 года назад

      Our flat isn't particularly well insulated, but room based heating and closing doors helped save us quite a bit. Even leaving a door to an unheated room open was fine as long as the target temperature was based on the termperature sensor in the room where presence was detected.

    • @ALaModePi
      @ALaModePi 2 года назад

      @@teunvl95 My point still applies. What I was saying is that, if you're not insulated or blocked off, you're heating the unheated room (or the wall or the outside).

    • @teunvl95
      @teunvl95 2 года назад +1

      @@ALaModePi of course you lose energy that way. But the size of the surface that is exposed to outdoors or rooms that do not need to be heated determines how much energy is wasted.
      If your house is not insulated and you only heat your living room, you are still saving a great deal of money, especially when the internal doors are closed. Warm air diffuses to the other rooms slowly, but the heating source and the thermostat are in the living room. If the room next to the living room ends up being 3 degrees colder than the living room, you are saving 3 degrees in heating that room.

    • @ALaModePi
      @ALaModePi 2 года назад

      @@teunvl95 Exactly. My point wasn't that this disqualifies anything like this, only that you should be aware of it and take it into account.

    Found that while motion sensors are great for turning on lights in a room when you enter keeping them on when your still in a room like when reading or using the computer can often leave you in the dark. That's why I use room presence devices like esp32s with espresense firmware on them to till when I leave the room and turn off monitors, lights, fans, ect. Once calibrated they work very well for this. Also use room presence to tell who starred the washer and dryer so can target just that person when it finishes

    Why spend money on all this kit? Just turn the blinkin’ lights off as you leave the room. You would be spending just as much on all this ‘stuff’ than your energy! Get a simple power down plug that turns everything off when you turn your TV off. Sometimes these are free from Energy companies. Turn your condensing boiler thermostat down to between 50 - 60 deg C. Your boiler works best at this temp. Also simple cheap timers connected to devices that turn them off at a particular time can be used too. You don’t need all these complicated ‘smart’ gadgets!
