This was written for fans by fans, and newcomers can still enjoy it. Fun fact: Chris Hemsworth actually worked with Peter Cullen (the original voice of Optimus Prime) to get the voice right and at times you can hear it.
To be fair, this is why people watch youtube reviews. I was on the fence about watching the movie, so watching teh review was teh push I needed. Thanks as always Greg.
Usually, with good movies I had low expectations for, there's a single moment that finally makes me fully buy in. In this movie, that was when Megatron's glowing red eyes started blurring across the screen as he moved.
My expectations were extremely high going in, and that has always ended in disappointment. For this movie, they were exceeeded. I was truly stunned at how good it is, and I clapped when the credits rolled.
my favorite thing about this channel is the reverence you show for children's entertainment. I have long thought that entertainment for kids (movies, cartoons, comics, books etc) tend to talk down to kids and simplify everything unnecessarily. Kids pick up on way more than we give them credit for and more challenging stories and themes won't be lost on them, they'll pick it up.
At first, I found the plot predictable, but when they did not go in-depth on the class struggle between the two side I was surprise. They followed a simple plot and did it very well. I was impressed. I look forward them putting out a sequel.
Man, Paramount barely promoted this one but I’m glad to hear it’s not terrible. Will be checking it out this coming weekend. Thanks for the great review!
I went into this movie blind. Not even seeing any advertisements for it, unaware of it actually existing until a friend of mine asked me to see it with him once it hit the big screen. I loved this movie as someone who grew up collecting Transformers before my Lego obsession took over. I loved how they paid homage to the comics a little with Primus becoming Cybertron instead of the Quintessons creating the Cybertronians. Everything about it was awesome! Second best movie this year!
I wasn't really paying attention to the lead up for this movie, and we weren't planning on seeing it. But your review convinced me to go see this with the kids. Thanks. Your review highlights all the areas that usually concern me as a parent.
Sounds like a movie where the writers / creators understand: 1) Create a coherent easy to follow story with solid characters 2) Give the audience what they want (good story, action, humor, an escape from reality) 3) Don’t insert our own personal biases or any “message” I’ll take my family and pay to watch movies like this all day
Wait..we're living in an age where most movies are shit, but the TRANSFORMERS film of all things is one of the few good ones??? I think I'm gonna faint...
It's actually good to the point that the official youtube channel of the Oscars featured TF1. "Academy Originals" youtube channel shows a cool shot analyis and breakdown
Badassatron! Me and my three young boys LOVED the movie. Loved the voices, the action (sometimes was a little hard to see), and loved seeing a villain BE a villain. Loved how Megatron flipped his switch (a little rushed and sudden but understandable) because he was so distraught about finding out the truth. Broke my heart when he let Optimus go.

Greg, I hope your review and other glowing reviews give this film some legs. I plan to go this weekend with my son. Thanks for the family perspective review.
Unexpectedly great movie for all ages considering the rating. Definitely surprised they got away with the violence. The plot was for sure bare bones predictable but the action and characters were so much fun that it didnt matter. The world felt lived in and i hope they continue this universe and keep it animated
Yeah, it was predictable... but predictable in the way one expects a rollorcoaster ride to be the same or similar when they re-ride one. They set up expectations and then delivered. Easily 9.5/10 film in my book.
Also, despite it being fully CGI, the estimated budget of the film is $75 million. But I will say, the marketing was terrible for the film, advertising it as a dumb, comedic kid's film like Minions, instead of the competently written family film it actually was. And that marketing clearly sabotaged the film's potential box office earnings. I hope word of mouth helps remedy this situation so that the trilogy can commence.
As a Transformers fan, I adored this film. It's great. But even as just a movie in general, it's great. It was funnier than I thought, and it was really dramatic and engaging. We got this and Inside Out 2 this year. And we're getting The Wild Robot later. This a better year than I thought it would be. I hope they make a sequel.
My wife took our kids to see it. They all seemed to enjoy it. My ten year old was sad about the friends not being friends anymore and my five year old was able to tell me a good bit about the movie which tells me she was able to follow it well.
I really hope there’s a media shift towards villains being pure villains. We can understand why someone is filled with anger and rage without it being a sob story and a “maybe he was right all along” trope. IMO this apologetics for being evil has seeped a bit too much into our culture.
I don't see why they can't coexist, or why we can't have grey morality story that actually addresses the repercussions of the characters' negative actions
I was worried they were going to make Megatron a misunderstood bad guy that isn’t actually evil. I so agree with you about hating the moral ambiguity push! Now that I know that’s not a theme here, I will definitely take my boys to go see this! Thanks for the review! (I do wish the writers had left swearing out of a kids movie though!)
I saw the trailer months ago. I thought let's just give it a chance. I don't give many movies chances anymore so it wouldn't hurt to give something I loved dealy from the age of 2 a chance. Saw the movie 2 weeks ago and I'm planning to see it again very soon. It's a must watch
Honestly, I guess I’ve been living under a rock and I had no idea this movie was even being made, but as a child of the 80s, now I want to see it! Thanks Greg :-)
I (a longtime Transformers fan, since I was your middle kid’s age) and my girlfriend (never seen a Transformers film in her life) went to see this movie together and we both loved it. I’m very impressed
I know Megatron's story was rushed, but honestly. I LOVED IT! I was enjoying it and other than the rushed part, I thought it was well done and I wanted to cheer 'YEEES MEGATRON HELL YES" when he declared I am Megatron. And the fact that that was scene was played alongside Pax becoming Optimus Prime. COME ON! And their fight, PERFECTION! Like OH MY GOSH THIS MOVIE WAS INCREDIBLE! Stellar animation, great and fun action, actual villains! LIKE COME ON YOU GOTTA ADMIT THIS COOL!
You, Tyrone Magnus and Jeremy Jahns have given this movie solid reviews. I think this Saturday morning, it's high time I rolled out to the theater and found out for myself.
As a parent of 3, I transformed the like bottom. Keep up the good work. You say you are happy to talk about quality media. So are we! It's refreshing to see you praising a good movie, that can handle entertaining kids and adults at the same time and not being preachy. Like the original Pixar movies did masterfully.
The box office results for this film have shaken my faith in audiences. My only hope is this film sells a ton of merchandise and dvd’s because I need more of this. Maybe they’ll use whatever plans they had for sequels to make a show but who knows. What should’ve been the glorious start to a new Transformers saga now may end up being the last time I get to see these characters on the big screen. As a huge lifelong Transformers fan it just feels bad, but I’ll always be happy this movie exists.
I'll admit, the trailer had me skeptical. I was going to wait for it to arrive on streaming. But now, I think it would be worth the trip to the theater to see this with the family. Great review, and solid recommendation. I'm looking forward to seeing this.
Lifelong, hardcore Transformers fan here. My fiancee and I went to a local fan screening in town two days prior to its actual release. We loved it so much, even my fiancee, who is prone to falling asleep to any movie we go see in theaters, was awake and invested in this movie the whole time. I actually teared up toward the end, watching Optimus and Megatron’s friendship die like it did. The only other time Transformers had me tear up like that was when Megatron “killed” Bumblebee towards the end of Transformers Prime. Transformers One is the Transformers movie I’ve always wanted, and I’ve seen the original 1986 movie hundreds of times and can quote it like Bible scripture. I hope and pray that this movie does well enough to warrant a sequel that keeps the same writers, cast, and crew, because we Transformers fans have been starving for good, quality movies like this!
I grew up watching the original Gen 1 Transformers cartoon and the '86 movie. I haven't been much of a fan of Michael Bay's movies; but this one was amazing. I felt so much nostalgia watching it and I really enjoyed the story. I'm hoping there will be more to come in future sequels. Plus, Starscream's voice actor was the best.
Great review. And I'm wholeheartedly with you on the frustration at moral ambiguity in children's content. Like you say, this movie does a great job of making the main villain, while in some ways 'understandable,' clearly and unambiguously in the wrong. It doesn't promote despising people, but it doesn't do anything like a "well, actually, what really is wrong anyway in a circumstance like this" either. One thing that first drew me to Transformers 40 years ago, and one thing that's kept me coming back, is the strong sense of good vs evil, and the importance of virtue, in most TF media. This film did that aspect justice.
6 children? Two teens and a 10 and 4 year old?!?!? -> Liked! Subscribed! Love your takes. Now I can clearly see where you get at least some of your motivation to do big things. Keep it up!
I wish this movie was getting more eyes- I reallllly enjoyed it! And my better half who is a decade wiser than me LOVED it because he said it was pretty reminiscent of the original story wise
I was already planning on watching it, but now I’ve heard several reviews saying “this is surprisingly good” so I’m definitely gonna give it a watch once it hits the streaming services.
Totally taking my son to see this next weekend! Didn't even know it was coming out until you mentioned it yesterday. We're also planning to go see Wild Robot the following weekend. I really hope that one is a banger too, on par with Wall-E, my all-time favorite Pixar movie
was surprised too by the movie. Surprises didnt end there, even the Oscars - Academy featured it on their youtube channel. "Academy Originals" some cool shot analysis there
We took our boys to see it Saturday as a last minute decision because their friend was sick and we had to cancel other plans. They loved the movie. My wife and I had a great time too. The writing really is superb because it's simple enough for kids but not dumbed down. Just because kids won't be able to follow a complex plot doesn't mean they don't notice themes or catch the subtext of social interactions among characters. In fact, kids are especially good at catching onto what is not said.
This was on my son and I’s radar. I’m so happy to hear it’s good. It sounds like a breath of fresh air. We’ve also been enjoying Knuckles on Paramount+. Also very few “modern” themes. It seems like many of the children’s entertainment brands are course correcting. Many, though with the obvious exceptions
I have to give you a shout out for stressing the terrible reality that moral relativity is. It really is in so many movies now, and I remember when I first heard about some villian origin stories (i.e. Maleficent, Cruella) coming out, I wondered to myself, "Why would I want to watch a movie about how a character became bad?" None of that appealed to me because villains are just...bad. Regardless of the excuses movie companies will give them as movies. So I appreciate your stance on this.
My son saw it first, and insisted that I watch it ASAP. My expectations were pretty low, but leaving it I was very pleasantly surprised about how good it really is. I thought Bumblebee was stupid, and Starscream should have played a bigger role. A few too many plot devices, but overall, I'm pretty sure I'll see this movie again someday. It enriches Transformers lore immensely.
Transformers One was great! But it's going to have a bit of competition next weekend against The Wild Robot. Nice review, Greg! I agreed with all your points.
My biggest issues were two specific scenes - Optimus jumping out the window of the archive room with a drone he had damaged - this would mean the film ends with Orion Pax's death had it not worked... bit silly. Also, them just happening on the message inside of Steve in the basement level with Bumblebee... I would have tied the opening scene with that via: Orion Pax finds a disc in the archive room but nothing will play it - he rushes out when he is spotted, movie goes on, he is thrown down to Bumblebee with D-16... When B talks about trash on the belt, D-16 mentions the unplayable disc and tells Orion to toss that out -- when he pulls it out, B says his buddy Steve can read it! They meet the imaginary friends and B plays the disc through Steve and THIS is when we see the message from above by Alpha Trion - this is what leads them on their mission. Generates importance on that opening scene a bit more and showcases B may seem stupid or insane but he actually knows when something is not actually trash - he kept an old disc reader for Steve's head which plays an importance. Overall, it is a very entertaining film, with in my opinion, incredibly written character arcs for Optimus Prime and Megatron - he snaps into psychotic anger essentially - why he is so quick down the path of evil. Also, they make the Decepticon name have meaning - the ones who oppose the deception: DECPTICONS.
Thats the thing with IDW Megatron: things got off his hands waaaaaaay too much. xD He starts very humble and his claims are honest but once he starts going down the "dark path"...well..we know how it ends. ^^' Glad that you liked the movie. :)
I was already inclined to see this movie because I'm familiar with the comics it's based on and enjoy them. But your review has made it a lock I'm going and taking my son to see it. Thank you.
I saw the trailer showcasing all of the voice actors and it felt like a cheap way to advertise the movie, and I wasn't interested and cast it aside as another generic kiddish Transformers movie. The only Transformers I actually like is the first one. So it's a bit of a surprise to hear praise for this, and also to see that it has such a high rating. I'm considering watching this now, thanks!
Hey Greg, I managed to see the movie a night before, and it exceeded my expectations. I had a post that stated I had some skepticism, and I still think I was right to worry, but the way the movie used my fears to make a stupidly good plot element out of it floored me. I was thoroughly charmed. How charmed? If this film were a woman, I'd serve it a grilled steak dinner with garlic bread, scalloped potatoes, and a rose gold ring to propose with. I am also now infinitely furious with the advertisers because, Scrap me stupid, those ads were beyond incompetent and misleading. I like Keegan Michael-Key in something because he was fairly decent playing Bumblebee. Not funny, but decent. Like, this is so good, I wish I grew up with a Bayformers film series that was this good.
It's been so long since I've watched a movie where the audience clapped at the end. This reminds be of Puss in Boots 2, a movie with low expectations that ended up being amazing.
Wait, wasn't the matrix of leadership the thing out of Silicon Valley? Oh Jack you were a great CEO. Man I really liked this movie. The trailer for it did not do it justice. My kids loved B. RIP Steve.
Actual Villains?! And heroic HEROES?! 😲🤯
I know! I was, well, flabbergasted, flummoxed, and floored
i mean, youd be hard pressed to NOT be the slightest bit sympathetic towards megatron in this movie (that makes no sense said out loud or written out lol)
That double origin sequence without any dialogue was very well done.

'TIL ALL ARE ONE!
I am 51, and a fan of the brand. I am shocked that this is such a great movie!
Good job Greg.
sounds great - okay, let's actually see a Transformers movie!
Yea, the "Badass-a-tron" use a ton of times was surprising. Luckily our 5 and 7 year-olds have not repeated his nickname.
I grew up in the 80s and was a huge TRansformers fan... I may just watch this out of nostalgia.
I really hope that the TF franchise continues on this route. Animated.
Holy cow, a good transformers movie
No one is more shocked than me! I love a pleasant surprise
Totally taking my son to see this next weekend! Didn't even know it was coming out until you mentioned it yesterday.
We're also planning to go see Wild Robot the following weekend. I really hope that one is a banger too, on par with Wall-E, my all-time favorite Pixar movie
I saw it twice in the theaters & I plan on seeing it a 3rd time, I absolutely love it and I'm a fan from the Beast Wars era
Glad to hear of another good movie for kids to enjoy
The animation interested me and this has convinced me to check it out
They made a kids movie? for kids? that was good? I struggle with this concept. But I'm glad to hear there's good animation being done in the world.
was surprised too by the movie.
I was put off by the first trailer, but your thorough review has given me interest. Thank you!
1:40 _OI_ !
Don’t _disrespect_ the Matrix of Leadership! I don’t see YOU lighting our darkest hour, buddy!
Ha!
Nice! Been waiting for a solid Transformers movie since the first one with Shia. I'll take my nephews to watch it
Transformers One was great!
Pleasant surprise
I love hearing good reviews! 😂
Thats the thing with IDW Megatron: things got off his hands waaaaaaay too much. xD He starts very humble and his claims are honest but once he starts going down the "dark path"...well..we know how it ends. ^^'
Glad that you liked the movie. :)
Saw the movie this weekend with my 8 year old son and we both really enjoyed it! Very good movie that kept both of us entertained.
I was surprised to find myself having such a good time. This one really nailed it
My god! Some good piece of entertainment? The legend is true?
I wasn't planning to watch this movie. Now I actually might
After seeing Beetlejuice without the kids (obvious reason great movie) I'm now excited to take the kids to this, was gonna skip it but I'm in
I was already inclined to see this movie because I'm familiar with the comics it's based on and enjoy them. But your review has made it a lock I'm going and taking my son to see it. Thank you.
Even from the trailer of this movie it felt like it'd be good. I havn't felt that way about a movie trailer in a LOOOOONG time.
RIP Steve.
