Spring just sprung here in Australia, I've planted a sweet cherry, lemon, macadamia and raspberry so far. Now I'm scared I'm going to get the pruning wrong!
Most tree experts say do not trim more than 1/3 of it, as when trimmed at the proper time can shock it. I prefer to prune in fall when trees are asleep and all food is stored and not still being pulled from branches. Ideally you can prune anytime before tree wakes up for spring. When you start seeing color on buds is last warning to get it in. But sometimes it happens outside the ideal window because things happen. 😊
Hi Kerri, I’ve got an old Macadamia tree that keeps year in Sydney. I never knew it was that easy to grow food.
Thank you for this information. I have a Meyer Lemon, Tangelo and my fav, a Mandarin Orange. I've been opening them up and getting small crops. Now that will change. At 64, never too old to learn! Been doing it wrong my entire life.
I have trouble pruning my fruit trees and not being able to resist rooting most of them. Such great gifts to friends and family. Also grafting is fun, it's so easy to have a fruit salad tree. Every time I prune.... can't resist
I’d buy a fruit salad tree.
I cannot thank you enough Kevin! The first 4 minutes was all I needed to get going on my citrus trees (2). I have had them for 3 years now and NO fruit because I either didn’t know what I was doing or, like this season, way too much high winds blowing off my flowers. They’ve grown in foliage exponentially since I started treating them right, and now it’s time to prune. Hoping for next bloom to keep those flowers and finally get fruit!
BROOOOOO, these trees have boomed since we planted that first orange a couple seasons ago! Hats off.
I stopped pruning my Mayer lemon tree as much as I used to and I’m getting a monster crop. I followed your instructions when planting a citrus tree last year and my bear lime is really producing as well. Lots of tiki drinks are coming soon! How I wish the previous owners of my house managed the height of my avocado tree. It’s too huge to get all the fruit. I had it majorly cut back earlier this year. But it cost me a lot of money. I’ll probably do it again in a couple of years.
Glad to hear this!!!!
Are you me? I have the same story going on here!
@@missdarque twinies!
@@missdarque yes we are all each other
We lost all but one citrus in the great 5- day hard freeze in Houston last year. And none to be had to replant yet. It’s amazing how attached you can get to your trees
Summer pruning is important for deciduous trees as it helps with size control. Winter pruning for deciduous trees is for detail work and structure or maintenance of a mature tree. Otherwise, great video
Great video on pruning fruit trees! I don't worry about leaf miner damage on mine either and while it's not as attractive, it doesn't seem to affect the overall health of the tree. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the update and showing the pruning location from last year.
Kevin you have given clear and accurate information. I always prune my stone fruit in summer. Winter pruning is to stimulate new growth, summer pruning is to promote fruiting. Love your channel. Thanks 👍👍
My grandmother has this 20y/o persimmon tree and I've been lightly pruning it for the last 6 years or so. The tree liked one of the prunes too much and produced way too much fruit. A storm comes late autumn and most of the tree breaks off with the weight of the fruit and the force of the wind. I had to cut it back 1/3 of its height and almost 70% of its width. The neighbors said I cut it too much (IT WAS ALL BROKEN) but this year the tree grew upwards with a vengeance, it is way too compact in the canopy but full of vigor. Early summer I pruned it again to control the height and to see if I could encourage it to the sides.
Since I'm only there a few times a year, I can't really control the way it grows, but I know it's recovering well and it has fruit, albeit smaller than last year. This video has encouraged me to continue my pruning adventures with the tree :D
Wow those peaches looks so perfect and juicy. I love THEM. You taught me something I didn’t know of pruning but I feel if buy some of them and avoid the mistake! Just loved this video!
Awesome video! I wasn’t 100% sure I should be pruning back my citrus last week, but my eyes couldn’t stand the sight of the leaf miner damage and I figured it just made sense to remove anything that was dead or diseased. Thank you for sharing this video. I feel a lot better about my decision. 😂🤷🏾♀️ it’s a learning process right?
Loving these tips! About to start a 30 tree orchard this year😱 needing all the tips I can get💕
Dude this is so strange I literally pruned my jostaberry bush yesterday priceless.
Hi Kevin, great video! I hope you and your family are safe. I hope the storm doesn't do much damage to your garden. Hope you post a update soon. Stay safe. I am near Pasadena, CA waiting save some rain water.
Thank you so much; your fruit orchard and gardens seem to do so well; I take your tips to heart. Great video!
Thank you so much! My 3 citrus trees are only 3 feet but here in Montana they will have to live in the greenhouse or my house in winter so I most definitely have to keep them at a certain height! When the time comes I will know how. I do have limes and lemons on but the orange is too young yet.
Good timing! I was just the other day considering if I should prune my kaffir lime bush. It has A LOT more growth on one side, so much that it tips over. I'm going to even them up a bit. I use the leaves more than fruits, so it's ok to lose fruits for me.
I've got a mango tree in my new yard I was just thinking needs some pruning, great timing!
Stone fruit summer pruning for size control. Winter pruning more for structure. Summer is when you want to prune to keep the size manageable, heavy winter pruning will stimulate a lot of new growth.
I was going to say the same thing. As a rule of thumb, winter pruning promotes growth and summer pruning does not.
Greetings from Arizona! We are FINALLY cooling down and getting ready to start pruning for the fall flush. Thanks for your tips and tricks that actually work! Cheers 🥂😎
Your channel is growing so fast 🔥.. keep up the good work!
I planted two apple and a cherry tree this year. They are all doing great and I plan to keep them at 6 feet so that I’m able to reach the fruit.
I'm curious what the life expectancy of each type of tree is before it doesn't produce as well
A big regional nursery here in Washington also recommends pruning in summer for optimal tree health.
Thanks for awesome tips, I have to do this with my Calamondin.
We have a sidewalk strip we’ve been thinking about putting fruit trees on. I think this style of pruning would be perfect for that area. The trees would stay small and manageable for a yard.
Thank you for the information about peach trees
Your fruit tree orchard is goals!!!
I keep waiting to see in the background of these videos to see if the neighbors start getting inspired and they grow more things also.
I don’t have any fruit trees yet but this was both really informative and just relaxing to watch.
Hey epic gardener do y’all or have y’all thought about planting peaches and plums?? I absolutely swear by you 💕💕 and you’ve inspired me so much. Now I want to grow everything 😂😂. Thank you epic gardener
Good info! Would love to have a backyard orchard!!! Can't right now in a rental in Connecticut. But I can dream!👍
I believe we grow in a similar zone. I’m 10b but our humid heat in Miami is horrible. We can’t do that for citrus. Fall and winter is the best to do any pruning. You might have colder winters than us too
I wish my fruit trees were as small as your "massively overgrown" peach. Ha. Yes, I've recently learned that my winter pruning has led me to size problems and that summer pruning could be the solution. Keep it going, Kevin!
This encourages me to prune my rose bush.
Watch out where you plant peach trees, they can go crazy. I pruned mine hard this last winter trying to keep it about 8'. It shot up to almost 15-17' this summer.
interesting video!
Very nice explained, I'm living in Brazilië and have the same problem, so thanks again👊👊👊👊
What if you were to interplant, let's say comfrey for your chickens, between the trees; would doing so help with pest pressures and use of space to create a better balance of soil diversity?
Do you have any plans to root your cuttings? I know it's not your usual content, but would love to see it. Hi from Northern Ireland 👋
when are the 6 cell domes/trays coming back? 🥺
Will you have time to show us your hydroponic system in more detail? I’d like to learn how to make one
@Epic Gardening How do you have your citrus tree grow so much?! What is the soil mix you used? Do you fertilize them with anything? What is your watering schedule for them and how long? Thanks!
Great video. Do you have any flowery shrubs? I would love a pruning video because I need to prune my Chinese snowball bushes. They are growing out like your fruit tree at the end of the video lol. I also struggle with my crape myrtle trees no matter what other videos I try to learn from.
I giggled everytime you mentioned you want your trees to be around the same height as you (I know it's for a good reason). So when I can have an orchard, it's probably a better idea if I get all dwarf fruit trees 😂
I also laughed when he said he wants them his height. At 6-7 ft this guys a giant!! Lol
You can prune a regular sized fruit tree to stay any size you want as well.
Moro blood orange is extremely difficult to grow here in San Diego. I have one. Leaf miners love it. You need to kill them with neem oil treatments. What is interesting is that my blood orange bloomed one time 5 years ago and never bloomed again since. I am curious to see how yours do. It should be interesting to see. Also blast them trees off with high pressure water from the hose to get any other insects off and if you see ants you know they are bringing in the pests and protecting them.
Hey Kevin... I've an idea for a video that may be helpful to a lot of people...when I used to start out in my garden, i had a lot of questions and not many people who could answer them. How about you find someone curious who's barely starting out in gardening (like a few days old), and let him ask you questions that he may have, while you answer them. You're such a good teacher for gardeners. However, you've been gardening for a while, and I feel, as a teacher myself, that sometimes we fail to understand students issues, because I've not faced them at all, or faced them so long ago that I forgot how I dealt with them. A fresh, new perspective may help you identify issues that common gardeners face that you may not have even considered.
That's an excellent idea of having an inexperienced, beginner ask questions. We take much for granted with vocabulary or terminology in gardening. @sabitboss, I'm interested in knowing what you taught and who were your students. Your insight is appreciated and respected by me, and now I'm curious about your experiences as a teacher. Thanks for your post.
@@user-pc5tp2xs1h i am currently an English Language lecturer at an university, i primarily deal with students who take English classes as continuing education (TOEFL, IELTS, Business English and the like)
I have taught Computer Science as a lab instructor, and I've also had a range of posts from software developer to IT Project manager in almost 11 years of professional life, but I find teaching to be my true passion.
Admittedly, though, since I'm from a Computer Science background teaching English, I wish I was more knowledgeable. However, I also feel that my own lack of in-depth knowledge of English (things a native or someone studying English as a subject would probably know well) actually benefits me by allowing me to understand some of the issues a student might face.
So, can you start setting some of these cuttings to propagate the trees?
Great video. In Australia the spring time really gets things growing.. My grafted lemon/orange has the lemon taking over and the orange graft is slow. Any tips on this? I have been pruning the lemon much harder than the orange.
Thanks for a great video .
I pruned my Peach tree probably in a wrong way and it’s been a year since then and the tree is only growing branches on the top .
All middle branches I pruned never grew back and the tree looks bad .
Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Kevin. I thought that planting citrus trees next to each other mixes/changes the fruit that comes out. For example will the lime become more like a lemon?
I like the idea of a citrus orchard and would like to plant some grapefruit and tangelos
The season is ending! And here in Germany is pretty much dead... Any suggestions on going into winter? Maintenance at the end of the season, what can we do to start preparing the next one?
Maybe how to select and preserve seeds?
Good ideas! Will film
Have you encountered the Psylid? How do you prevent them from attacking your citrus? And HLB?
New in your channel, love your videos. I’m in Southern California and I have a huge nectarine tree, branches are long and kind of low the leaves grow only on the tip of the branches, thinking of pruning when all the leaves are gone, should I cut all the low branches?
Thank you.
Pruning at the wrong time. A man of culture like myself.
sometimes, the best time to prune is when you have some extra time.
Hi Kevin, what about spraying? From what I've seen spraying fruit trees is so important for diseases like peach leaf curl. And will you spray citrus for leaf minor? Thanks
i've had a meyer lemon and a caldomin orange in pots on my deck since june, when should I plant them in the ground (or should I even plant them this year?) zone 7/8 border
I live in zone 7b. I planted a peach tree in ground and a meyer lemon in a pot this year. I will need to bring the lemon in for winter. Do I go ahead and prune it now? Or do I wait until it’s time to bring it in?
I didn’t know you could get good stone fruits in mild climates because of chill hours required
Do you have any videos on how to start a pineapple from a pineapple? Tried following the videos with no luck (on other sites that is) thx 🙏
Eric, for apricot, pluot, and plum do we prune open center or central litre??????
I have a peach tree (about 40 years old) and a massive plum tree (guessing around 20 years) neither have ever been pruned correctly and now the plum is about 15 feet tall and the peach does not have the proper aeration it needs. Any tips to fixing the shape on old trees?
How far apart have you planted your fruit trees?
My orange trees are 40 years old. Avos are 35 years. Should I trim them back?
What is the white paint on the tree trunk? Thank you.
how do you make them grow? I planted my citrus about 2 years ago and they're not growing. they're just the same size as when I planted them.
What are you feeding your peach and apricot trees? I'm also in SD and mine are growing or fruiting nearly as vigorously. Thx
What's your take on citrus trees in FL?
In Reno NV, I have a old Bing Cherry tree that needs pruning again. It is a tight bunch about 8 feet tall. Suggestions ? Thnx
Do use used those diseased citrus leaves as mulch?
What is the best way to buy a fruit tree bcuz the ones I bought didn’t make it
I’m in zone 10, Los Angeles. I have a dwarf Mayer lemon tree that just gave fruit in December. As well as a young dwarf Mexican Lime tree that gave its first harvest in November. Should I wait until the spring to prune them or can I prune them back a bit now, January 2023?
Your trees your business bro!🤔🌳
I hope you’re getting rain today so your trees get a shower! Oceanside is barely raining.
It's raining for sure!
@@epicgardening such great news!
Good sources for fruit trees in US?
I live in the Pacific northwest i can't grow citrus trees here
Did you cut the bare root trunk of your trees to about knee height before you planted it?
Emphasize outward facing buds when pruning deciduous trees to promote lateral growth. Otherwise, excellent video.
Hope your homestead is fine following the tropical storm and all of the fires around.🙄
Can I somehow send you a photo of my fruit tree/bush for advice? I haven’t got any fruit this year but had a bunch of flowers and I’ve never pruned it.
What do you use to whitewash your fruit trees? I see in the video that the trunks are white washed to prevent winter scald. I've been trying to find out what to use, but this is rare here in the US (in Europe it's very common) so I have not been able to find out. Can you please share what you use? It would be very useful!
Grow the 'stache! Grow the 'stache! Grow the 'stache!
👍
At what point do you clean your tools? Some things I've read seem to suggest a cleaning, with bleach or some such, between plants so as not to cause cross contamination, I guess, but that seems like it would make a big job a lot slower.
I'll do a vid!
I was certain someone would ask this question as I was taught the same. Glad I waited and ty Kevin for the upcoming video
You remind me that I should clean and sharpen my tools.
Why paint the root stock on the fruit tree white like that?
How are you preparing for the predicted storm?
What would you recommend or what resource can I use for information on pruning/thinning standard navel oranges? I have 4 that are roughly 100-110yrs old and 30ft+/- each. The canopy is thick, overgrown, and difficult to access fruit at this point and I don't want to jeopardize them by making bad cuts or doing it at the wrong time. Any info is appreciated!
Complete noob here. I've read about NOT pruning fruit tress in the fall so as not to spur branch growth. Are your suggestions to do it now based on your Southern Cali climate ( I'm in Denver, Colorado) or does that apply to anywhere in the country (and the no pruning in fall was wrong to begin with. )
Anyway thank you for all of your informative videos! It's gotten me off my butt so that I'm finally getting around to taking care of a massively overgrown nectarine/apricot/ I -dunno -what orchard that has been neglected for well over 15 years. ( They look like nectarines and sort of taste like them but are pretty small, like apricots. Will have to get them the proper care to grow right so I can figure out what they really are. Lol)
Hey I'm in the mountains above Albuquerque. 6900 feet. I inherited some apples, pear, cherry and peach trees. I did my first winter prune on all of them. The peaches are about 4-5 years old, the others 2-3 years old. We have epic winds in the spring, so pruning to thin the canopy is a must. It also keeps airflow among the branches and encourages blooms which turn into fruit. Up here, it takes all summer for the apples and pears to ripen, while the peaches and cherries are ready in early August. My friend in Centennial, South of Denver proper, taught me all these techniques. She has three Apple trees.
Maybe sully should have built up to the crash at the end.
What part of the country and zone are you in? I’m in Florida 9b and I was just thinking about this
Never mind - San Diego. Got it. Great video!
I keep buying yuzu flavored things because I love lemon, but I'm learning that I don't actually like yuzu
Did he ever say how many pieces they picked?
Hi good morning I have a question I planted a peach tree print Florida Peach I live in zone 9A in Houston do I have it in a grow bag at 45 gallon grow bag do I need to trim the branches before my first Frost?
Yes, I would!
Belo video. Estou aqui fortalecendo a amizade. Juntos crescemos mais
How do i stop my greenhouse from being a Bug catching greenhouse while keeping my greenhouse cool and not an oven (it's like a Tent kind of greenhouse that I can move )
Probably by putting in some mesh screen when it’s open. You can buy mesh screen at the hardware store. It comes in rolls.
What’s the paint you apply to your trees?? Please
It's an organic coating from IV Organic
@@epicgardening thank you so much
