    even though annabeth wasn't really in the titan's curse, i still remember loving it because like you said it was the turning point - i think i was just a big fan of the hunters . lolol also yes totally can relate to thinking i was like annabeth but also feeling the Poseidon parent vibes. ZOE NIGHTSHADE YES AN ICON. I think Calypso was bitter in the later series because she still wasn't freed? or something like that? like she had expected for the gods to forgive her and come get her or something and then nobody came for her. my details are hazy

    • @bookishsophia
      @bookishsophia  4 года назад +1

      honestly the hunters were too cool for my small elementary school brain to comprehend at the time. also calypso really went from elegant goddess-like figure to a girl who shouts "duh" and "i hate you" lmaooooo what a regression

    The Titan's Curse is hands down my favorite book in the series - I've only reread the series once but I pick up Titan's Curse all the time (mostly to read Zoe's scenes and cry internally - I legit love her character so much). But yes, I resonated so much with Annabeth growing up and now that my younger sister is obsessed with the series, I can definitely see her looking up and relating to Annabeth so much.

    My finals aren't over yet so now I'm physically restraining myself from re-reading the series right now. Also I'd always figured I was an Athena kid (for obvious Annabeth-related reasons) but low-key wanted to be a child of Poseidon?? Like I remember using the trident as my avatar for various profiles but also just being obsessed with owls. Anyway now that I'm 20 I'd definitely join the Hunters of Artemis lol

    I’ve always loved the Titan’s Curse because I really liked Thalia as a character (I started reading the series in my early teens, so I was a bit emo and thought Thalia was the cooolest). I love and relate to Annabeth as well, though. Rachel is also one of my favourites... Anyway, Calypso was supposedly rewritten because she was so bitter that Percy said he would get the Gods to free her, but they never did and so she hates him now (I think). Probably Rick just wanted some more Strong Female Characters™️, which is fine, of course. I recently listened to books 3 and 4 again and I forgot so much! Love this video for sure.

    I reread this back in 2015, and my favorites were The Battle of the Labyrinth and Sea of Monsters when my favorite used to be The Titan's Curse, but damn that third book is excellent. It's so impactful and YES! Zoe's death is devastating (similar to the way I felt about A death in the first Magnus Chase book). It's probably the one I remember the most to this day. As for whose son would I be, I always thought Hades because I related too much to Nico (and even more in the Heroes of Olympus).
    I also was planning on rereading PJO this year (I finished rereading all of HP, Shadowhunters and Veronica Roth's books already), but I skipped it, opting to read The Kane Chronicles (scandal!) because, even tho what you said is true (PJO is Rick's best work), The Kane Chronicles is his most underrated series that's actually pretty good as a whole (The Serpent's Shadow is one of his best finales, up there with The Last Olympian).
    As of right now, I am rereading The Heroes of Olympus and it's super interesting to go over something that meant so much to me back in 2014 (freshman year of college for me). I feel it is not impacting me as much, but I won't deny what it meant to me back then. Also, I'm rereading HoO because I want to reread all of the Trials of Apollo again and see if The Burning Maze is better because that was HIS. MOST. DISAPPOINTING BOOK and everyone loved it xD I wish you had a book talk for it because as of right now I have so many thoughts on it. Oh well, sorry for this super long comment which only relates to your video in the first paragraph.

    I loved watching this. I’ve only just started rereading the series, but my least favorite was def Sea of Monsters, and I think Labyrinth was my favorite? But we’ll see once I reread. I def identified with Annabeth and maybe had a mild bookish crush on Percy, but also as a ravenclaw, I always thought of myself as a daughter of Athena 😝

    I always thought of myself as a daughter of Athena and then I went to college and realized I was a dumbass so here we are :''') in all honesty I just think I would be the child of some cool minor deity. I've been rereading them too and the craziest revelation to me so far was how I viewed the Hunters of Artemis! When I was younger I thought they were cool but I was like "I would never join them" and the thought of Annabeth joining them was like NOOOOOOOOOOO but now I'm like "wtf was I thinking of course I would join them" so That changed lmao who needs men. Also I lovedddd The Titan's Curse and when I was little I think I was lowkey mad at myself about it? Did anyone else feel this? Because I was like how can you love that one so much when Annabeth is barely in it?!?! I felt guilty hahaha. But it really is just a great book and turning point for the series. Also YEAH I never forgave Silena either.
    I also agree that PJO is Rick Riordan's best work, but here's the question though- is PJO the best because 1) the writing is good, 2) the main character/POV is lovable, 3) every book is individually satisfying and the series as a whole is too, and 4) Greek mythology is probably one of the more easily digestible mythologies OR is it because he tried harder when writing those than when writing future ones? I personally stan Rick Riordan for all that he's done so I don't want to believe in the latter but it really does feel that way sometimes :(
    THIS MIGHT BE A LONG COMMENT SORRY. But like, I loveeeedddddd The Heroes of Olympus series but I didn't enjoy The Blood of Olympus, and when the ending doesn't satisfy you, it kind of taints the whole experience because you know you are going to finish the series unfulfilled. In the video, you mentioned how The Last Olympian was basically a war book and that not a lot of demigods died despite being vastly outnumbered against these all-powerful beings, but compared to The Blood of Olympus, PJO had way more deaths and it seemed way more realistic. I understand if Rick Riordan doesn't want to traumatize his readers by making the war so realistic that like half the campers die (and I'm glad he doesn't because it's really nice to have hope when putting up a fight), but like NO ONE DIED IN THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS. Besides Octavian I think, but no one liked him anyway. (The way I'm talking about this seems problematic...) And it's not like I love to read deaths and by no means do I want characters to die but if you're writing a second series that supposedly makes the characters face even greater odds, how can you have all this buildup only to have a couple of the main characters lull Gaea to sleep?!
    This entire comment^ was to explain why Heroes of Olympus couldn't match PJO. I really think if the final book was done better I would have loved both series equally (or at least as close to equal as possible with PJO being bumped up from the nostalgia factor).
    And honestly my hot take is that the Heroes of Olympus series should have been seven books so that the first two books can introduce the new characters separately and then the five-book arc could commence from The Mark of Athena to give more time for all the buildup to pay off. But that is an essay for another time haha.
    As for The Kane Chronicles, I did really enjoy those and I learned quite a bit Egyptian mythology, but the main characters weren't as lovable as the PJO ones to me. Then, for Magnus Chase, I...don't think I remember much Norse mythology at all :/ is it just me, or was the actual mythology kind of put on the back burner for the character development? I mean, it's fine, but I was always super impressed by how PJO was equally entertaining and educational. And finally for The Trials of Apollo, I have not read past the first book because I cannot STAND Apollo. He was funny as a god but not as a kid.
    THIS IS LONG OKAY BYE I WENT OFF ON A TANGENT TOO IT SEEMS LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!

      @bookishsophia  4 года назад +1

      yeah, blood of olympus was an extremely anticlimactic conclusion to a series that honestly was, up to that point, so high stakes. i do think the quality of this series has fallen over time. pjo reigns superior, and newer series like trials of apollo or magnus chase just don't have the same excitement or energy or personality. it's hard to describe but it feels really true

    Definitely identified strongly with Annabeth and was a little bit in love with Percy, but I always imagined myself as a child of Hephaestus or Athena. Might have something to do with the fact that I never went to the beach and was a little terrified of the ocean.

    I haven’t reread the PJO books for the longest time since I am still catching up on the trials of apollo and magnus chase. But i think my favorite book when i was a child was battle of the labyrinth. The only death that I was sad in the series was the death of nico’s mom in the last olympian. Lastly, i love percy, i want to be annabeth and I thought that I am a daughter of Apollo.
