Donkey Kong on the Colecovision was my first experience of a cheat/easteregg in a video game. Don’t know if the trick worked on other ports but on the first level, you could climb the first broken ladder halfway up, then go back down and take one step left. You would then jump while holding right. When done properly, you would jump right and fall through the floor. If you waited around 15 seconds, Mario would suddenly super-jump from underneath the screen, all the way to the top girder. I thought that trick was pretty cool and would always show my friends.
24:20 Not the Pokey. The 7800 only has TIA (2600) for sound. There are only 2 games that had a pokey in the cartridge and that is ballblazer and Commando. The PK in Donkey Kong PK homebrew for the 7800 is for Pokey.
The story/ history of the Game Boy Donkey Kong 1994 would definitely rock especially the part where in the SUPER GAME BOY the voice of Pauline can be heard as it was originally intended for the Arcade game.
Awesome video as always Pat. I have to correct you on one thing though. Diddy Kong's name isn't Diddy. It's Hatty. Go watch Dorkly Donkey Kong meets his agent and you'll understand and agree.
This is the history of video games and I had no idea about much of it. Patman, you probably know more about their origins than the companies that made them. Thank you for the memories that I didn't know existed.
Great history of DK continued, Patman! Thanks! At 13:10 I have never seen that game in action for SuperNES, but that looks like a fun update version of Donkey Kong. I really enjoyed those arcade levels so it's good to see more variations. Lots of Donkey Kong gaming variety to enjoy.
The different ports analysis is always great. For decades it's been easy to take a relatively simple game like Donkey Kong for granted as running on any phone or modern device. But back in the mid to late 80s you might be lucky to have a single home computer or console to play it on, you just had to make do with what you had. Even the 4 colour Dos versions with PC speaker bleeps as sound could be well worth playing if it's all you had access to. Hence arcade perfect ports being considered a gold standard for gaming right up till the mid to late 90s.
When I was just a kid about nine or ten years old when Donkey Kong first came out my family went on vacation to a Florida resort and the pool area had a Donkey Kong machine where you could play for free, just hit start. It's the only thing I can remember from that vacation. Good times.
My first time playing the classic arcade Donkey Kong was way back in the early 80s. As a kid, my parents chose the Intellivision over the Atari, so that's the version we had, but I did play the Atari version plenty at a cousin's house. Always loved the classic DK games and was always looking for the perfect port. I think Champ Kong came closest from the ones I played, but now that you can run a near perfect version of it on the Switch, the rest are just for pure nostalgia. I think my favorite version of it will always be the GameBoy one though.
Another interesting thing about Mario vs Donkey Kong was it originally was envisioned to be an enhanced remake of Donkey Kong 94 with plans to have a level editor using the game cube you can find some screenshots of this prototype but no known leaks of the game in this state sadly. In Japan the game had an e-reader feature, it was disabled in the us version, it would unlock special levels in the game, however unlike super Mario advance 4, these levels were already coded in, the us version has these as well but different levels and the e-reader menu needs to be hacked in.
Game Boy DK was a masterpiece of its time, I think. The reworked mechanics and the hammer-throwing feature come in handy once you get past the original arcade levels, and the game stays interesting and challenging until the end. I'm glad it came with a save feature.
@22 mins..i had the vic-20 version, and my friend had the 2600 version, and i was very happy with my vic all 4 levels, and the the game play was quick to get used to i have played it again(emulated) within the past 5 years, and it still holds up, in my opinion. nostalgia i suppose lol
Donkey Kong on the original Gameboy to this day is still my favorite Donkey Kong. Not to be compared with Donkey Kong Country; totally different animal…
I always enjoy your content. When I was a kid, I had the eight bit Nintendo system, but did not have the individual games. However I had one port called donkey Kong classics, which was a combination of both the original and junior.
hope you’re doing well patman 😀 love your videos covering our shared memories/experiences with these wonderful games. keep the videos coming and we will be ready!
Great 🙂I love when you show the gameplay of all the different versions. I'm a big Donkey King fan. A deep dive into the Super Game Boy version that you mentioned would be cool too. It's the standout title of that little piece of hardware, in my opinion. Great on the go, great to play on a TV and presented very nicely.
I remember playing a version of this, which may have been called Crazy Kong, on the ZX81 😀 The main character was an inverse 'J' from what I remember but it did have the pie factory level...
Both parts were very good. The Game Boy version you mentioned was my favorite Game Boy game, I'd be interested in seeing that video about it you were considering.
When I was a little kid, I thought Donkey Kong was some kind of weird Pac Man clone, 'cause the fireballs slightly resembled the ghosts, and turned blue when Mario grabbed the hammer. The 7800 version isn't that bad, though the PK homebrew is far better. Seems like it, as well as DKjr and Mario Bros, were ports of the Famicom/NES versions of the games, as they share many of the same quirks. I think Atari put em out because they had a license agreement that was still active at the time, and they could also stick it to Nintendo in their own small way.
@28:45 "...Donkey Kong looks terrifying with his razor-like teeth and creepy Hannibal Lecter smile..." was absolutely hilarious. You never let me down, Patman. 😂😂😂
I heard the creators of Crash Team Racing, made the first stage in Diddy Kong Racing on ps1 to get a better understanding of kart physics for a Crash racing game
The Nintendo Famicom Disk sytem of Donkey Kong didn't have the Pie stage. The version that did was a wii version that added it and som extra's to the NES rom. It was avaliable with a limited edition wii in europe. They later added that version to the Nintendo DS e-shop.
As far as the 2600 original version is considered, I find it hilarious that both this port and their Pac-Man port are both infamously hated as games, but they were the go to sound effects for video games in cartoons throughout the 80's and 90's. With of course the exception of the DIC produced Super Mario cartoons that actually used Super Mario game sound effects, and oddly the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog which also used Mario sound effects.
It is strange that you mentioned the sound effects being used because I distinctly recall watching the TV show cheers when it first aired and they were playing a random videogame but it was the 2600 version of donkey Kong that were the sound effects. I almost put that in the video :-)
Once again another outstanding document of the history of Donkey Kong Part 2, I hope you have a wonderful time of the year, So have yourself PatmanQC a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! ❤⭐🌟🎄🎁🎀
And don't forget dk jr math. Eh. It's easy to forget anyways. Another great video. For hacks the two biggest are donkey kong 2 (all new stages) and donkey Pauline edition where you play as Pauline rescuing Mario. Both are arcade hacks that are in real arcades like funspot NH.
While the fan-made port of the 2600 version shows that a better version was possible, I don't think it was possible back then, due to publishers wanting things when they wanted them, and using the tiniest rom-size possible.
Atari 7800: "The pokey tries its hardest but just can't get the job done.". You mean the TIA. The pokey is the chip in the excellent sounding Donkey Kong PK.
24:24 … did you say the “POKEY”’ tried its hardest in regards to the abysmal sound? Or did I just hear “POKEY”? I ask because the 7800 lacked a sound chip. With the 7800 containing a 2600 inside (what with the compatible cartridge slot and joystick ports) the powers that be decided that the 2600 sound would be just fine for the 7800. And that comes from the 2600’s TIA chip. A shame, I know. The thought was make the one time expense of the 7800 lower and milk people for the games. For me being an older millennial and since the Master System was my first system that didn't have Donkey Kong, I would have to wait until I was 8 years old to get an NES before I could play Donkey Kong since most arcades had gotten rid of them by the early 90s. I had the Donkey Kong Classics on NES that came with both DK1 & DKJr and for some reason as a kid I enjoyed DKJr a lot more. A few years later in the late 90s when I discovered Mame and finally got to try Arcade DK1 it just seemed considerably more difficult than the NES version or like Game Mode B. Via emulation I also did try Atari 2600, 7800, and Colecovision DK1 but I didn't realize there were so many computer ports for some reason. Now that you pointed them out I may figure out a way to give each of them a shot just to see how they feel and play. 😎
I really enjoyed donkey Kong Junior as well. So much so that it was a video I did a few years ago but it really wasn't that popular. I'm glad my conversions video gave you the incentive to check out the other versions. Thanks
MS-dos Donkey Kong is straight up horror film nightmare fuel😱 At one point somebody got paid to code that and thought it looked good and accurate to the game. They are supposed to be entertaining mostly kids and young players, not terrifying them! 😂
Started up the video 6h ago, but something came up and I left it on hold till now, Pressed play and the video starts at 0:13 with "Hey everybody!" ...I was like, heeeeeeellll noooo!!!! (skips 5sec back) Happy little games!" ...now THAT's more LIKE IT !! :D

Really? I never heard of that one before
Love your channel. With so much bad stuff in the world it’s nice to take a fun trip down memory lane hosted by a fellow midwesterner
Me too I agree with you! 👍
Me three I agree with thee
Honey for gods sake wake up! Patmanqc just released The History of Donkey Kong Part 2 Before Christmas!!!!
Are they in a coma?
24:20 Not the Pokey. The 7800 only has TIA (2600) for sound. There are only 2 games that had a pokey in the cartridge and that is ballblazer and Commando. The PK in Donkey Kong PK homebrew for the 7800 is for Pokey.
Good to know.. I always thought the 7800 should've had better sound....
@@swampdonkey4919 There is a new cartridge design which can use Pokey, Yamaha or the Hokey (a modern pokey clone) chip.
Great stuff, Pat. I agree that the Gameboy DK game deserves it's own vid. There's so much going on with that one.
Great video !! I am Shocked that the Amstrad version is one of the best !!
"Happy little games!" Always happy for sure!
Sweet part 2. Gonna watch this now before I go to sleep
Always love the nba jam intro
Your videos make us all happy little people!! Christmas came early!! Thank you Pat!!
Thanks a lot, Merry Christmas
Awesome timing. I was just re-watching your Batman Robocop, and Terminator videos lol.
RoboCop vs Terminator is an awesome game if you get a chance to play it.
That's awesome
Lol, I have the Megadrive version and I used to have the Master System version as a kid. Briefly played the Snes version too but wasn't into it.
Great video, Mr PatMan.
Donkey Kong in the Intellivision version looks like giant smiley face with legs and buck teeth
In other words: horrifying😅
my favourite channel on RUclips
I'd be up for that in depth look at Donkey Kong '94, still one of my favorite happy little GameBoy games!
Patman QC videos! The gift that keeps on giving! Looking forward to seeing more of the Donkey Kong content!
This is the history of video games and I had no idea about much of it. Patman, you probably know more about their origins than the companies that made them. Thank you for the memories that I didn't know existed.
Thanks I appreciate that, I try to do as much research as possible
Thanks for part 2, great videos. I used to play Killer Gorilla on the Acorn Electron, it still is a brilliant version of Donkey Kong.
More Donkey Kong please! I would love more videos exploring all the things you teased in this video!

Hunchback and Mr Do used to be my favorites back in the day.
13:41... the new port (dk vcs) looks incredible, but the 7800 version is damn near perfect.
I would love to see a video on the Super/Gameboy Donkey Kong. I loved it
Your channel by far is one of my favorite retro gaming channels on yt keep up the great work.
Great video. I owned the Commodore 64 version of Donkey Kong back in the day.
Patmannn! Hope everything is well over there and happy holidays to you Patman
When I was just a kid about nine or ten years old when Donkey Kong first came out my family went on vacation to a Florida resort and the pool area had a Donkey Kong machine where you could play for free, just hit start. It's the only thing I can remember from that vacation. Good times.

Last week on PatmanQC. I love it!😅
Glad you're enjoying it
Great 'tube as usual Pat. I found that fascinating. Didn't know about the celeco VFD in all my years!
Yes I'd love a more in-depth episode about Donkey Kong 94 please.

Love donkey kong I actually own a cocktail
Cabinet (that does have some issues) but still is really fun great job on the video too
I'm so jealous, you're lucky to have a real cabinet. I hope you can get it fixed. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Great Part 2! Thanks Patman. High quality vid.
2600 brings back some classic memories. Remember being 8 and finally beating the arcade on my own.
Fantastic
Game Boy DK was a masterpiece of its time, I think. The reworked mechanics and the hammer-throwing feature come in handy once you get past the original arcade levels, and the game stays interesting and challenging until the end. I'm glad it came with a save feature.
Yes I did like the hammer throw feature
yes Patman! Pt2
Really enjoyed this being a two parter PatMan. Thanks for all the wonderful content as always, good health and hope you have a wonderful Christmas 🎄.
@22 mins..i had the vic-20 version, and my friend had the 2600 version, and i was very happy with my vic
all 4 levels, and the the game play was quick to get used to
i have played it again(emulated) within the past 5 years, and it still holds up, in my opinion. nostalgia i suppose lol
Thanks for these! And I, for one, would like you to go into the GB version of DK more. It's one of my favorite GB games.

Awesome videos, Gameboy Donkey Kong is such an incredibly fun game.
Thank you
Thanks to you I now know what a Japanese speaker impersonating an Italian stereotype sounds like!
Wohooo part 2!!
Another awesome documentarty Patman. I always enjoy the conversuion sectiond of your videos. EXcellent job my freind.
hope you’re doing well patman 😀 love your videos covering our shared memories/experiences with these wonderful games. keep the videos coming and we will be ready!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, I'm always on the lookout for interesting games

Glad you enjoyed!
I remember playing a version of this, which may have been called Crazy Kong, on the ZX81 😀
The main character was an inverse 'J' from what I remember but it did have the pie factory level...
I remember a constant connection between Punch out and Donkey Kong, all the up to actually fighting Donkey Kong.
So happy to see the DK history, and you doing what you do best!
Thank you my friend
as always, great job. great humor. always learn new things about the games i grew up with.
Both parts were very good. The Game Boy version you mentioned was my favorite Game Boy game, I'd be interested in seeing that video about it you were considering.
I agree, it was one of the best Game Boy games. I'm hoping to cover the Game Boy soon

Super! Iwas eagerly awaiting part two. :)
Fun video again! The Miyamoto bit was a bit of a WOW moment
I agree, he seemed rather salty for soome reason
@28:45 "...Donkey Kong looks terrifying with his razor-like teeth and creepy Hannibal Lecter smile..." was absolutely hilarious. You never let me down, Patman. 😂😂😂
LOL thank you :-)
Hi Patman. I’m sure you are busy making more awesome videos but if you get the chance will you do a review for the arcade game The Pit?
Yes, a video on DK '94 ❤
I had the Buckner and Garcia "pac man fever" ALBUM! Talented guys, every song 10 out of 10!
Well done patman,, nice homage.
Thank you kindly
had the Atari 400 DK and it was great. I believe it was the first home council with 4 levels
I heard the creators of Crash Team Racing, made the first stage in Diddy Kong Racing on ps1 to get a better understanding of kart physics for a Crash racing game
Awesome video have a awesome day
Awesome more Patman
Love it and happy Christmas
Happy holidays!

Great video and channel, thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
The sounds from the 2600 they use in
Movies and shows.
Great video! Although I did cringe each time you called the cement factory the “pie factory”.
One major missing thing, D2K: Jumpman’s Return, basically Donkey Kong’s Ms. Pac-Man
With Popeye entering public domain, now would be time to release the arcade game on Nintendo switch arcade archives.
Thanks Pat man can you do the history of bionic commando? My favorite is the history of Ninja gaiden it's one of my favorites

Please give us a DK '94 vid! So much packed into a gameboy game!

Thanks, I'll be sure and correct that
U can hear the DK rap in the background of the Super Mario cgi movie, when he fights DK

The ZX Spectrum & the MSX ports, make DK's face look like a skull
For me being an older millennial and since the Master System was my first system that didn't have Donkey Kong, I would have to wait until I was 8 years old to get an NES before I could play Donkey Kong since most arcades had gotten rid of them by the early 90s. I really enjoyed donkey Kong Junior as well. So much so that it was a video I did a few years ago but it really wasn't that popular. I'm glad my conversions video gave you the incentive to check out the other versions. Thanks
DK in the MS Dos port has some creepypasta potential
Donkey-Me on Game Jolt is the best for playing movie versions of Donkey Kong like Star Wars and Exorcist Kong ;)
On the Apple2c of you hit the number 2 you are invincible, no joke
LOL that's awesome
MS-dos Donkey Kong is straight up horror film nightmare fuel😱
At one point somebody got paid to code that and thought it looked good and accurate to the game. They are supposed to be entertaining mostly kids and young players, not terrifying them! 😂
Yes, please do a deep dive on DK '94!
LOL that is fantastic, thanks
11:34 This is blatant Wii U erasure, and I will not stand for it.
One Homebew version of Donkey Kong that should get recognition is DK Arcade for the Intellivision,, which is really good, especially when you consider how horrible the official version is. Rumor had it that Coleco intentionally sandbagged the Intellivision version so their own console would look superior
Those silicon graphics cpus brought us Jurassic park graphics too
That’s a great connection.
great video
Thanks a lot
What happened to the Jack Hammer in the Colecovision elevator stage?
Mario's walking sound in the Commodore 64 version, sounds like misquitoes to me
Minor correction - the 7800 uses the Tia sound chip, same as the VCS. If DK had a Pokey chip in it, it would have sounded on par to the NES.
i'M GOING TO HAVE TO CORRECT THAT, THANKS
Oh hell yeah🤟
I thought the VR home-brew version deserved attention just for the reason that it plays as if you are Mario in First Person view as you run n jump your way to the top to save Pauline.
Never knew it existed, like I said it's one of the most widely cloned games on the market so there is no way I could cover all of them
