This gives me ideas for my Catalina 30, and I learned something about leaving somewhere for water to runoff so it doesn't interfere with the electrical works. Fair winds.
Hi Jim. Look up the "Stingy Sailor" on RUclips. He was the guys that gave us most of the ideas. We loved our C-22, and it was a relatively inexpensive boat to refit. It was how we learned to do the work before we got a real liveaboard boat. The best place for parts by far is Catalina Direct. They have nearly every obsolete part available, and this alone sets the Catalina boats in a better light. Of course a lot of these parts can be retrofit to other brands, but it's nice to have re-engineered and improved direct-replacement parts available.
Hi Ben. Sorry for the late response. It's been so long since we had the Catalina that I've lost track of what we used. I buy all this stuff on eBay, so take a look there. Select for "US Only". All these items come from China, but you want a US seller or it'll take forever to get. You'll need the LED strip lighting, plus power module and remote control (usually sold as a set). Once we had good lighting in the boat, it became so much easier to go boat camping.
I believe we white nylon wiring clips with 3M double sided backing foam with adhesive. I can report that this solution was not ideal, and the clips tended to come off over time. They work best on glossy fiberglass, and adhere less well to rough surfaces. In some cases I was able to drill and use screws to affix items to the fiberglass liner or wood parts. Our little C-22 still holds a big place in our heart, and was the perfect training boat to learn systems, rigging, teak and fiberglass repair, and general small boat sailing and handling. Let us know if you need answers on any other aspect of the Catalina. BTW, Catalina Direct is a great supplier of parts. They manufacture their own line of discontinued and upgraded parts for these now-classic boats.
Is that a new mast step and then some sort of mast step organizer or is that all one part? My boat is older and did not come with the deck organizers and halyards back to the cockpit. I want to do all that and some day fly a spinnaker as well.
I'd peruse the Catalina Direct website. They have just about every type of upgrade part for a Catalina or similar daysailor. The parts are vetted for the application and prices are quite reasonable.
I figure when I rewire my new to me cal 22 I'm gonna put the battery on the starboard side to offset the outboard motor weight. The water marks show she lists to port when sitting at rest.
You can use sand bags or lead weights (or even lifting weights) to balance a boat. I've heard of people rewiring their boats and coming across factory installed ballast. Often, the battery compartment isn't that easy to relocate.
Hi Ben. I get mine on eBay. Sort for “tinned boat cable wire”. Use Blue Sea Systems Circuit Wizard app for your phone to calc AWG or ISO wire size by load and run. Remember to include the whole out and back run (black and red wire) in your distance calc. Blue Sea has much better descriptions of each option in the calculator than they did previously. Always order an extra 2-5 feet of wire whenever you order as it’s amazing how easy it is to come up short. Reply if that isn’t enough.
It was a 1988 Catalina swing keel. What a great boat. We sold ours literally the week before I left for Scotland to close on the Oyster. Make sure to keep Catalina Direct on your favorites list. I found their pricing was hard to beat and they had a lot of parts that were specific to the Catalinas that were unavailable elsewhere. Often, their parts are improved over the originals. Also, the Stingy Sailor website is awesome for doing a refit on the cheap. Ken, who runs that site, has done marvelous work in documenting his projects and beating the bushes for good stuff that doesn't cost a fortune.

Good to know. We loved our little C-22.
Thank you SO much! I am restoring a c22 from bare bones and this is exactly what I was looking for!

Nice work. I like the LED strip lights, I put similar ones in mine. Also like the deck light idea, might have to consider something like you did also.
Boy it's been a long time since we had the C-22. Great times!
Excellent video! Thank you. You do great work.
You're welcome. It's been a great summer and the electrical system is still running strong.
Nice Work,Looking forward to more Sailing Vids By You!
Thanks so much.
i really enjoy your how to info vids ..great vid guys ...peace out
Thanks so much.
Please provide a link for the LED light strip! I really like that and would want it all over the inside of the boat!

You live in a beautiful area.
Those were fun days.
Very clean install! What did you use to attach/affix the four plex mast wiring to the top and side of the cabin liner?

Me too, battery under starboard cabin bench I think.
Which solar controller did you go with. I like the flush mount.
It's a GoPower unit from Defender I think. That one is the larger 30 amp version. Bigger than we needed but had more features.
Where do I purchase "Boat Cable" in spools like you have?

what type of catalina is this and what year I have to do a complete electrical refit on a catalina 22 fixed keel 1988??
