UKRAINE WAR: Putin "not credible" Russia expert Frank Umbach on the peace conference

Umbach stresses that the conference is one piece of the puzzle in a series of diplomatic initiatives and that it was not officially called a peace conference, but rather a conference on peace. The aim of the conference is to find a diplomatic solution that does not represent a peace dictated by Russia.
Umbach stresses that Russia is expected to adhere to the UN Charter and territorial sovereignty, which it has affirmed several times in the past but has blatantly violated through its current behavior. This is not just a war between Russia and Ukraine, but a challenge to the entire European security architecture and global international law.
He stresses that Russia, which has excluded itself from the conference, must abandon its real war aims. These aims go far beyond territorial claims and aim at the complete destruction of Ukraine and its cultural identity. Umbach argues that Putin will not abandon these aims as long as he feels strengthened by political developments, such as the European elections. Western democracies must therefore remain strong in order to force Putin to the negotiating table militarily.
According to Umbach, it is crucial that Putin renounces his war aims in order to be credible and to allow a chance for peace. Until then, the only option is to use military pressure to get him to change his position.
