please respond alip ba ta, the world's best finger style guitarist from Indonesia who is able to combine bass, melodies, melodic vocals, rhythm and percussion with just an acoustic guitar (one man band), guaranteed his subscribers will grow rapidly, be seen, and liked
That English interviewer interrogating Alex was a snarky git. He was like that with everyone who he didn't deem to be "cool" enough! Good sequence of clips, I haven't seen/heard of them all before.
I saw the interview when it was broadcast and got the same impression as you. Interviewer is David Hepworth, you'll struggle to find a better example of a charmless man.
@@Newworldman66 That's right. I think he usually co-hosted Whistle Test in the 80s along with Andy Kershaw who I quite enjoyed. Hepworth definitely one of the worst though.
Nothing will ever top the Power Windows tour for me as I was in the front row. Interacted with Alex a bit while he was playing and Geddy winked at the Expos hat I was wearing. The concert flew by so fast it seemed like 30 minutes. It was a wonderful blur. To witness Peart super close up was an indescribable experience and inspiration for a young drummer cutting teeth.
These MTV interviews make me feel old. I remember seeing some of them when they initially aired on MTV. Geddy looks like a kid. He’s probably 30 or so in these videos.
😂If you feel old, you probably are😢but I’m right there with you. I vividly remember the debut of the Distant Early Warning video on a weekday night at 9:00pm central time, because I was studying for the final exam for geometry class that was the next day. Had to have been late April or early May.
Great interview, I have not seen this one, great find Justin. "Sincere and Honest" just one of the many reasons Rush fans love this band and they continue to have a lasting fan base.
Check out the Canadian comedy show rick mercer report's interviews/hang outs with the members of rush. Seeing Geddy toboggan, Alex skydive indoors and Neil give drum lessons.
Fun to see those interviews around the GUP and Power Windows albums. Its one of the few interviews I can recall where Geddy is wearing contact lenses rather than his glasses. Also that "Fox Hat" mullet is on point for Power Windows.
This was in the period where samplers were first becoming mass-market but they didn't have hard disks yet. So Geddy's tech was backstage the whole time swapping floppy disks between songs. Ironically at the end Alex had the most tech on tour. On Time Machine and R40 his guitars all went through Apple's MainStage software on a MacBook Pro and he used AU and VST plugins for effects instead of pedals or rack mount. Saved the roadies and techs some pain, I'm sure.
Geddy has said in interviews over the years, nothing was not worth trying/considering from a musical point of view, as long as all three members were in agreement to try. Hence why they played with their sound/producers/styles over the years. Always creative!
Geddy's comments about "It's not easy writing a good 4 minute song" is almost the exact same thing the guys from Genesis said a couple years earlier. Also, Rush wasn't the only band needing a guy behind the scenes when they went on tour to manage the keyboard sounds. Yes did the same thing on their 90125 tour in '84.
Don't forget that this was the height of the pop commercialization of rock. The labels were churning out cookie cutter bands in leather to take advantage of this.
One thing about most Rush albums is that they are growers and you come to usually like them more as the years go on and ranking from favorites to least favorites usually change often. Power windows is usually in my bottom 10 Rush albums but I still like most of the album
Yeah they never made it to England or Europe that tour. Signals in 82-83 was last time before Hold Your Fire in ‘88. Then it was 1992 for Roll The Bones and not again until 2004 😱for the r30 tour in Europe. A few of the times they toured were tough times in the economy for a lot of folks, yet they still managed to do it professionally and profitably, despite A LOT of bigger acts, at the time, having to scale back both appearances and venue downsizing to make it worth doing.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼👍👌
Power Windows was the first time I saw them live, in Philly (and the first time I smoked weed too lol). I can't remember who was supposed to open for them, I "think" it was Souixie and the Banshees but that doesn't seem right. But for whatever reason the opening act got changed to Blue Oyster Cult, who were also AMAZING. While looking around to try and recall the opening act, I found some live audio on RUclips from the April 16th 1986 show at The Spectrum. You might be curious to hear how they did it live in '86. I haven't had a chance to listen to all of it but I checked out Middletown Dreams at about 12 minutes in, sounded great, Alex and Geddy do a great solo/duet at about 14:30. ruclips.net/video/jlce3FuDyN8/видео.html
Also now I'm not so sure of that link, if it's actually from the live concert, or just a a few songs from the set list with crowd noises spliced on between. Curious what others think.
@@JustinPanariello i've alqays liked geddy';s look, envy of all that hair but yes that look was not flattering. he had a wife so did they all. one of them should have taken him aside and suggested say the look he has now.
Yes, they interviewed Geddy and Alex at the same time, and it came out that maybe Alex didn't work as hard as Neil and Geddy, as far as songwriting came. This is why it seemed the keyboards sort of dominated this era of Rush
These ARE old! Mostly MTV interviews. It's also interesting how much promotion they got in the MTV era. Even if they are not really a "video" band, I think Rush did benefit from MTV. FYI, I was at that Rush/Steve Morse show in Houston! I actually got to meet Steve at a guitar clinic he did while he was in town. He was asked about Rush and their technical ability, but interestingly he kind of deferred to just comment on how nice the guys were. Just kind of went on and on about how they were just cool, nice, good guys. I think Alex has said that he isn't that interested in guitar pyrotechnics but he has gone on record to say that Steve Morse is one of the (if not THE) most amazing guitar player on the planet. He's also said nice things about Eric Johnson.
This particular video w/ Alex talking about Power Windows and a couple Signals references is of better quality and more insightful. He has a couple points that reference your own statements in you Power Windows videos. ruclips.net/video/d9VSjJ2a1Ec/видео.html
As you probably well know, not knowing what you’re going for has been the demise of many a band or album. Especially once you’re burning studio time. Like you said, things can get fleshed out there, but you really have to know what you’re doing at that stage.
OK, Justin... I may like you a little less now because you worked with EWF, and Maurice was a god! All kidding aside, I appreciate your journey through the Holy Trinity's catalog and your opinions almost mirror mine when I was listening to these tracks IRL back in 19 dickity 2! Keep at it!

Mark Goodman's hair was undefeated
It's a preppy hair metal look. How can you defeat that?
Ya gotta love Martha Quinn. 👍🏻
Remember when MTV was called Music Television and actually played videos? Pepperidge Farm remembers.🤣
Yeah! It was about VJ’s, music and videos.. not about being teenage and pregnant.. LOL!
That was great, Loved MTV back in the day!
Those are great MTV days!! Brings back memories!! Music… not teenage and pregnant…LOL! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
The honesty and openness of the band members always gives me comfort.
I will forever say that Power Windows and Grace Under Pressure are Rush's 2 best albums.
And Signals is the prologue. Those 3 my favorite albums as a whole
I really liked this era or Rush music, but let's be honest.....Moving Pictures was their best album, then 2112, then Permanent Waves
Power Windows is my personal favorite.
I was at the Pensacola tour opener. great show!
Another appearance from the King of Mullets!

Thanks! I didn't realize Rush even got this much airtime on MTV back in the day.
Hey so that potato it was recorded on, back in the day it was called VHS😂. Totally dig you checking out these interviews.
yeah I remember them. about the size of 2 potatoes give or take.
You will find out , that, Power Windows is actually a fantastic album!!
Working toward specific goals... boundaries... borders... "Territories? "... 🙂
Love it. That tour was my first exposure to Steve Morse. That trio was so good, it felt like a double bill.

I'm still trying to recall the opening act, anybody else remember? Late 70's into 80's band, name was like candy or food related maybe?
Also now I'm not so sure of that link, if it's actually from the live concert, or just a a few songs from the set list with crowd noises spliced on between. Curious what others think.
This brought back some memories. What do you think of the hair styles? This came out my senior year in high school.
Geddy really screwing up the look here. Alex and Neil look fine at this point.

This was pretty cool, but much different than the Guitar World interview that they did during this time.
Yes, they interviewed Geddy and Alex at the same time, and it came out that maybe Alex didn't work as hard as Neil and Geddy, as far as songwriting came. This is why it seemed the keyboards sort of dominated this era of Rush

Quick question. What's your favorite Rush album cover? Or top two or three.
hmmmm i like Farewell To Kings, Permanent Waves. Power Windows is cool too.
I just ordered something off eBay it's going to be sent directly to you. It says by October 3rd.
Like structured chaos, eh? -- PWs is the greatest album of all-time!
Yes Permanent Waves is the greatest album. 👍👍😂
Just curious what in the world is a potato?? Lol. Do you actually mean a VCR player for VHS tapes?
