  • Building a kitchen counter top is a very rewarding and relatively easy to do project.. I used Sapele wood for this project because it's very dense and a great alternative to mahogany. Take a look at the tools and techniques to build a great counter top for your home.

    Your comment about putting the time in sanding is well taken. I learned that as I became more serious about finishing properly. Thanks for another great video Jon. Take care, Bob

    The first half of the ruclips.net/user/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

    I love your videos. I have been building farm tables with hardwood material. I have a grizzly 6" jointer, dewalt 12" surface planter, and grizzly hybrid table saw. I routinely come back to your videos to watch the proper way of doing things. You are very professional and offer tremendous amounts of knowledge.
    I would like you to upload more wood working projects if you have time. Thanks bud.

    nice video, very informative I particularly like the way you take special care when handling your wood. a lot of people do not realize that rushing the wood around your shop only creates unwanted scratches that take twice as much time as being careful in the first place to mitigate good job

    Excellent video, you are a great teacher!! I have to make a new countertop (bath vanity top) in my RV, and seeing this gave me confidence. I undertook a major renovation for an older RV - its in good shape, but dull and boring furniture, plastic sinks, carpet (ugh!), so decided to rip out carpet, and at the moment doing a full bathroom remodel. I'm tiling the floor (glass tile, not too heavy), painted all the RV walls, and putting in wood flooring in rest of RV. I want to change the sink to a stainless steel one, but need a slightly bigger countertop. Present one is formica, and looks thick and heavy. I've never done this before, so big learning curve ahead. I'm assuming I can use a less than 1/2 inch wood piece and cut it to size, paint and mount. I will be doing a nice paint job on it, and finish off with Urethane. On the other hand, it might be nice to leave it like your countertop, polished wood.
    Your counter is a work of art, well done! Thanks a lot for your video instructions!

    Im glad you commented about the biscuit joiner! I was skeptical about them from what Ive only been hearing on the net. I will will definetely be considering these as a future tool. I've been wondering about their use in the making of cabinet doors even?

    • @beyondlimitsproductions1468
      @beyondlimitsproductions1468 10 лет назад

      I cant wait to use a Kreg jig. Ever since I saw one on the net, I knew.." I have to get one! " I was curious though, I've never attempted to make a cabinet door before but I am taking on the challenge of making a frame and panel door with like a roman arch on the top,{made of PINE}, I purchased the 3 bits Freud $159 and am looking forward to see those nice cuts in some fresh wood. I hear a lot of people comment on using Pine on such projects but I am on a limited income so my options are limited as well. What are the basic precautious that can be overcome with the proper "preparation" on a cabinet being made from pine so that it doesn't twist and warp to an unnecessary level?

    Nice job! I try to talk people into doing them on kitchen projects I do routinely, It's weird how people will use it on their floors in a kitchen but seem to be hesitant to use it on counters...I use different tact's too..."Hey, your dining table is made of wood!" or, "look how nice this looks!" ...Crickets!...:) Granite sucks, it's a good product but delays, sub contracting and price points are crazy...You can buy live edge 30inch S2S blanks at some lumber yards for a decent price. Or fabricate like you did... Oh, and howdy neighbor...Philly...:)

    I want to do counter tops like these but I want to use walnut. Since walnut is so expensive do you think it would be a bad idea to but down 1/2" or even 3/4" plywood, then use 1/2 thick Walnut on top of the plywood to give the counter top more support and height? Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Is the polyurothane sealer safe to put food onto as a kitchen counter? Is there a particular brand you use? Is it resistant to heat or scratches? With the thickness of the wood you used is it the same as the thickness of a granite countertop? If I dont have the tools to attatch the pieces is that something I can get done at a wood shop? I really want to make this for my kitchen. If you made it for your customer what did you charge for the labor? Thank you

    nice work but just some advice here:1 go slower the the orbital sander cause if you were to stain the whole thing than you would see swirl marks all over 2:don't go across the grain with a belt sander as you will get ton's of scratches which are very hard to sand out with a orbital sander

    With Sapele being an exotic, similar to the price point of let’s say, African Mohagany... how much did you spend on that much S4S material? I could see that getting pricey in a heartbeat.
