I remember watching this back in the day, when I was still in middle school, maybe like 14-15 years ago. Mine got RRoD so I decided to bring it to nearby game shop with my dad. The shop guy "fixed" it, but unfortunately the problem came back a week later. So we brought it back again, and the guy told us it's unfixable and he gave up. The sad thing is that I just bought Dead Rising a few days before the whole RRoD, I was pretty desperate so I tried the towel trick from RUclips videos. Surprisingly, it actually works and I get to play DR... only for like a few days until it died. I haven't beaten my Dead Rising, and I think my Soul Calibur 4 was trapped in my console to this day. Ever since then, I saved money and switched to PC gaming, and I finally get to play and beat Dead Rising 2. Unfortunately I can only play the sequel since the first game was 360 exclusive back then.
13 years ago yesterday portal 2 came out, and 13 years ago yesterday is when my xbox RROD'd for the first time. I remember watching this video and fixing it temporarily a few times, then eventually did the x-clamp mod, and after that failed again I ended up going with a slim that still works to this day
oh my god, this is a imcredible trick, it really work. First my Xbox have 3 rings, and when I get out the towels (I use 3) appered only 2 rings as same as the video. I waited 25 mins. with the towel and 30 mins. to let it cool down. Thanks you @CheapyD you are like a god.
Just want to tell that I just did this 30 mins ago. I already had my local lap-top repair shop fix it earlier this year. It lasted for about 3-4 months. Thought I'd give it a shot.. and it worked like a charm. yet to see how long it will last this time.
Thanks for this, worked a treat (don't know how long for, but for now has let me update to new dashboard and let me download and play new demo's, has saved it from being a useless brick) thanks again!
@razzorwanted The 80 euro investment is worth the fixed xbox360 as opposed to the towel trick which will screw your xbox360 over time. The xbox repair center is not really far from you. It's in Poland. A new xbox costs far more than 80 or 90 euros. Besides, you get a permanently fixed xbox (possibly).
I know that it's close to new nexgens being released, but if you get the red rings, 95% of the time the issue can be resolved by a local electronic shop for
@Slocc420 2 red lights just means your xbox needs to cool off. just leave it in the cool for about over night and it will work again. 3 red lights means hardware failure which means that one of the parts of the xbox is broken just like a blue screen on a computer.
OMFG I was watchin AFV in the background while watching this and as soon as you said i think three is the magic number then the AFV guy said Three really seems to be a magic number. O.O :D
Unfortunately the 65nm Xboxes weren't all that much better in regards to red ringing. My elite red ringed and the failure rates showed they were still quite bad. After that I got a slim and still have it. Only recently did I begin to get a bit nostalgic for the phats and have a number of them, all working.
Leaving it on its side like that makes the xbox get the red ring faster because you're setting it on its cooling fans which it needs to cool off so it doesn't overheat and get the red ring. If you notice xbox's have little pads on the side where your supposed to set it.
@razzorwanted Unmount the xbox piece by piece until you have the mainboard with the two black X's in front of you. The problem is that the overheating caused the glue to sublimate slightly from the bearings. You carefully remove the X, put some decent glue on it and glue it back firmly and carefully to the mainboard. Your RROD should be permanently fixed now. The xbox360 is only complaining because it's not operating safely anymore. It's a built-in feature.
I have to say, the best way to avoid the ring of death is to take action once you hear your making all that noise, open it up and tear it down to the motherboard were the cpu and gpu chips are. Clean them and add new thermal paste (Arctic silver), also do a 12 volt fan mod, close everything back up and your console should not overheat. I also added a PC fan that I wired to a usb cable and attached it to the Xbox 360 vent, so it can blow in cool air, I never had the overheating issue again.
The towels where not the same when you came back from the asswashing procedure.. Look carefully and you will see that the pink towel is slightly different. I don't know what, but something happened during the break
This worked with an xbox original I bought for a $1!!!! So awesome! I'm actually trying it on another original right now. And one more thing: THIS ACTUALLY FIXED MY XBOX ORIGINAL PERMANENTLY!!!! :)
The three light RROD was a hardware issue that is easily fixed with a couple of screw drivers a soldering iron and maybe $20 worth of things. Takes about 25-30 minutes to fix it.
@ikantfli 99% of the times you get rrod is because the solder has lost connection either in cpu or gpu. baking the xbox in towels will actually melt the solder so a new connection is made. however personally i dont recommend baking the xbox in towels (fire hazard). disabeling the fans will work much better and it will go much faster.
The RROD is a sign that the solder under your GPU has melted. The 2 red lights mean that it has had a major hardware failure and the only way to repair it is to buy a whole new motherboard. Microsoft will not repair 2 red lights and the reason its quiet is because the 2 fans in back of the unit cannot push the hot air away from the CPU. Before you do this and permanently brick your Xbox, try holding the sync button and press the eject button to get a four digit error code then search online.
And on your right is a famous for its time hardware that would at times require the need to wrap a towel around it for it to work. All jokes aside technology has come along way, and its crazy what used to be just child things is a distant memory. Thank you for reading this whoever did. 10/5/2020 date. Timestamp 7:34
@razzorwanted Option number two (like I did) is send your xbox back to the MS repair center where they will decide whether or not your xbox can be repaired. If it can't be repaired, they'll send you (someone else's) console back that they fixed. If your xbox is out of warranty: costs you $90 (don't forget the $10 for mailing). If it's not: free.
Don't take my advice seriously, but look up the penny trick. It's a long term fix for the RRoD. My friend still has his original Xbox 360 from 2007 because of it.
every time I take off the AV cable I get the 4 rings of death (you get that when there is no AV cable attatched) What do I do I can't do the towel trick??
@Flippit1303 Only thing for that would be reapplying the thermal compound to the Cpu/Gpu. I have the red ring of death E74 and i took my Xbox apart and there really wasn't any thermal compound but also there are 4 chips that Microsoft that it would be smart to put a dumb ass piece of foam on it to "draw away heat" it doesn't work at all and looks like a melted piece of plastic. The towel trick just helps slightly re solder connections and also resets the Xbox. Overheat = Reset.
Alright, for me this was not the worst thing that you can do. It worked. Plain and simple. I wouldn't recommend doing this if you are still under warranty, but since my warranty expired two years ago, I decided that I had nothing to lose. So don't just say it is the worst thing that you can do.
I would recommend sending your xbox into microsoft or... buy some "Arctic Silver Thermal Compound with ArctiClean". Just pop open your xbox, remove the two heat sinks... clean off old compound, re-apply new Artic Silver compound, make sure you have an equally distributed amount of compound on each chip so that you have a good connection between your heat sink and chip. The idea is to keep it cool... so any spacing will lower performance and increase heat.
actually your just remelting the solder onto the wires (that probably been melted because of heat) and the towel part just confuses the xbox making it think that it over heated
@razzorwanted Remember, as a great physics university professor once said: "Facts without proof are non existing.". The lesson here is to not listen to other people if they don't have proof about what they are saying. This is why there was the Industrial Revolution in 1845; the 7 wise men taught us to think for ourselves. Let us do that.
Thanks so much!! i was going to throw my 360 away, but tried the towels and it worked....i was doubtful, but it actually worked... ps. the robocop gun thing had me in stitches!! classic!!
I'm not sure but I think the reason that elites don't get it (as much) as the white ones is because of a chip that I can't remember the name of. This chip actually shuts the xbox off and the three red lights come on but all its trying to you is that it prevented any hardware problems that could've occurred. I have the Halo 3 Special Edition xbox 360 pro and I've gotten red ring 3 times and nothing happened of it fixed itself.
so much nostalgia I remember watching this before I even got an xbox back in 2008
+DSX714 I remember watching this when I was still 11-13 years old.. can't remember, I finally understand the 1:41 towely reference Lol southpark
I still love watching this video to this day
That’s awesome!
PS3 and two Wii's in the back are like "wtf is that guy doing to that system"
Entropy: "It's time PS3."
PS3: "ME!?"
I come back here every couple years to get a taste of those easier days of the past

I remember doing this in high school before mine finally died after 5 years lol
13 years ago yesterday portal 2 came out, and 13 years ago yesterday is when my xbox RROD'd for the first time. DEAL OR NO DEAL! LOL
You still making videos bro?

11 years damn...time fly so fast :(
My first time coming back to this and oh man brings me back to being a kid haha
I randomly remember watching this 15 years ago. Can confirm it worked for me!
I had a 2006 console and tried... it totally worked... I don't know if I have to do this every week... but it worked!!! Thank you man!
Havnt seen this in about 11 years. Randomly thought of it. Weird nostalgia trip.
2 years later ive done it again
oh my god, this is a imcredible trick, it really work.

I waited 25 mins. with the towel and 30 mins. to let it cool down. Thanks you @CheapyD you are like a god.
I first watched this 12 years ago, and I just got his “wash my ass” bit...because he was living in Japan 🤪
this is the most amazing way to play your xbox for five minutes
this is the best 240p video I've ever seen LOL I'm just amazed.
The way he says " Shiiiiiiiiit. " When the gun breaks is the funniest thing ever.

I remember when we all had that dashboard I lost my virginity that day.
2 years later? That's the best you come up with. >.
Just want to tell that I just did this 30 mins ago. I already had my local lap-top repair shop fix it earlier this year. It lasted for about 3-4 months. Thought I'd give it a shot.. and it worked like a charm. yet to see how long it will last this time.

This dude basically Thanos, help us solve the world problem but then it costs us everything afterwards.
I can't believe it. Yesterday my X-Box showed me the Ring of Death. I found this video and tried it. NOW IT WORKS - It's Magic!!! Thank you
hahaha, "In fact, don't forget to bring three towels"... idk what made me giggle at that.
I like the way at 4.06 he says 'i gonna go wash my ass' whilst pointing to his face....good on him for saying what we are all thinking
I remember this fire hazard.

STILL WORKS!! Thanks CheapyD!
My Xbox 360 arcade edition did that, took about two years. We were so devastated…. Until we wrap that sucker in a towel. 😂

When Jeff Bezos told you how to fix your xbox
🤣
@m4fka im glad u saw it the right way, and do u think the rrod is still possible in 2010 or they fixed it?
Leaving it on its side like that makes the xbox get the red ring faster because you're setting it on its cooling fans which it needs to cool off so it doesn't overheat and get the red ring. If you notice xbox's have little pads on the side where your supposed to set it.
What a time in history
2023 still as relevant as ever, thank D
@razzorwanted Unmount the xbox piece by piece until you have the mainboard with the two black X's in front of you. Me at 6:55 "Please fail Xbox. Please fail Xbox. Please fail Xbox!....aww dang'it!!"
i almost pissed my pants when your robocop gun blew up when you grabed it haha funniest reaction...ppeeaaccee

I love what you do to your hair, is it natural?
This worked with an xbox original I bought for a $1!!!! So awesome! I'm actually trying it on another original right now. And one more thing: THIS ACTUALLY FIXED MY XBOX ORIGINAL PERMANENTLY!!!! :)
11 years ago. Christ alive.
2007 was good year. Halo 3 came out . Memories.
THANK YOU 4 POSTING THIS VIDEO!
Good old days!
Wow CheapyD you make Mr.Clean look like regular clean.
Fuck yeah I remember watching this a LONG time ago when my xbox broke.
Same here :)
The three light RROD was a hardware issue that is easily fixed with a couple of screw drivers a soldering iron and maybe $20 worth of things. Takes about 25-30 minutes to fix it.

Dude nice you uploaded this on my birthday
You're an Xbox wizard, fetching your Xbox from the depths of oblivion.

Thank you so much for the tip! Had only been playing new vegas for one sitting, before the red ring ended our fun. Thanks again!!!!!
I tried this out for a ten minute period, and my XBOX 360 has been operating smoothly.
i can't believe this was 6 years ago
actually in every fix, a part of "fixing" it, requires that you heat up the board. The difference is this skips the other steps.
And on your right is a famous for its time hardware that would at times require the need to wrap a towel around it for it to work. All jokes aside technology has come along way, and its crazy what used to be just child things is a distant memory. Thank you for reading this whoever did. 10/5/2020 date. Timestamp 7:34

Yes, the 3 lights at first meant hardware failure, the 2 lights at the end meant overheating xbox- cause it was cooking under the towel ;)
still working in 2018!!!
@CRISSBLANEHATER thank you for stating exactly what he said
Don't take my advice seriously, but look up the penny trick. It's a long term fix for the RRoD. My friend still has his original Xbox 360 from 2007 because of it.
every time I take off the AV cable I get the 4 rings of death (you get that when there is no AV cable attatched) What do I do I can't do the towel trick??
I have a solid red light
I think bcuz my roommate 3 year decided to spray into my Xbox can I fix it or not
@Flippit1303 Only thing for that would be reapplying the thermal compound to the Cpu/Gpu. So don't just say it is the worst thing that you can do.
if i add extra cooling would that fix the problem perminently
mine has worked sense November so im still happy
You fail to reach the point consistently but this has been an interesting watch.
It’s 2022 still remember that vdo it did work for me in 2008

I have to watch this video every 6 months.
That last towel was very manly
15 years later….and still don’t understand
dude you are a character of saints row three loool
actually your just remelting the solder onto the wires (that probably been melted because of heat) and the towel part just confuses the xbox making it think that it over heated
almost all the comments are making fun of this guys apperance. we get it he is extremely funny looking

ps. the robocop gun thing had me in stitches!! classic!!
@LIskimmer one is a Japan one and one is USA. I don't use either.
Hahah now that I look back at this. I find it funny how I did this because I wanted to play my Xbox 360.
I'm not sure but I think the reason that elites don't get it (as much) as the white ones is because of a chip that I can't remember the name of. thanks, repaired my xbox myself then the rrod came again, i know this isn't the greatest way to fix it temporarily but it still works.
@CheapyD Thank you so much it worked :D
