- Ah, Berlin. A cosmopolitan home to the world. But only if you can see it. More on that later.
If you’re new to these parts, my name’s Joe Baur. I make outdoorsy films, travel videos, the occasional recipe, and I’m an American with seven years of life in Germany under my belt, here to tell you about the pros and cons of living in Berlin.
Or as they’d probably say in Berliner… Schlimm und nicht so schlimm.

Alright, Berliners... What'd I miss?
All I can think of is the vibrant art scene. Great theatre, music and museums a-plenty.
Very true! Something I don’t take advantage of enough.
My son and his wife and kids just moved there in August 23. He is a dj. His grandmother grew up in Sighet that you did a video on. I lived in Chicago years ago. You remind me of the Chicago people.
If he’s a DJ, he moved to the right place! Thanks for watching!
Just checked: in Chicago the sun set 25 minutes later than in Berlin
😂
Authorities are notorious in Berlin especially.
I’m honestly surprised Chicago is that close to Berlin. I don’t remember the darkness being such a mental killer 😂
@@BaurJoe Where are you more outdoors, Berlin or Chicago?
@@arnodobler1096 By far Berlin. I ran along the Lakefront in Chicago, but that's about it. With Germany's more widespread public transit, it's much easier for me to access nature. Wrote a bit about this for Adventure.com adventure.com/germany-steigs-hiking-trails/
@@BaurJoe That's why you might notice it more, right? This has a greater effect.
Great article, by the way.👏
@@arnodobler1096 For sure. If the US had better public transit, maybe that would've made a difference. That said, it does seem like Germany is just better built for impromptu hiking and trail running. The US has great national parks and regional parks with trails, but Germany just have them *everywhere* -- in national parks, in local forests, you name it. It's incredible.
Thanks for reading (and watching)!
But is there pickleball there?
Oh, there's definitely some pickleball. At least one official club since 2016!
@BaurJoe Super to hear! Danke for responding so schnell also. Zum wohl!
@robertwray6004 Gerne!
Lastly, also the openess towards all walks of life. Very warm non-judgmental spirit there.
