i really liked the convo about how connor was afraid to learn japanese as a younger weeb cause he thought it was "cringe" but regretted it later. i did the same thing where i always told myself "i'm not gonna learn japanese, i'm not like Other weebs" but now i'm 30 years old and realize that any learned skill you pick up and work on for months and years is super fucking cool and not cringe at all, even if your reason for doing it is seen as cringe. people should learn languages for literally any reason because it's good for your brain.
same here, that part really resonated with me. my interests always made me feel socially excluded as a kid growing up, and i kick myself thinking about how desperate i was to fit in vs pursuing my actual interests. it's amazing to pursue a passion just because you want to, rather than caring about what others think. i loved this episode for sure!
Yeah. That kind of mindset is more cringe imo. Lol. People just have to embrace the fact that they're dorks who will never be cool, and do whatever they want without the fear of being judged
I completely agree. My family is Indian and everyone spoke 2 languages minimum those being Hindi and English (as well as other local languages.) My parents spoke english to me growing up and in school I was a horrible language learner, never being able to retain the language as well as not spending the proper time learning it as I never felt truly engaged. I'm still quite young but lots of my peers speak multiple languages and only now have I actually taken the initiative to learn another language.
Learning a another language is never cringe. It's how you use it that can be cringe. Especially if your talking like an anime character unironically :D
Lol I had this experience like a year ago, found out 2 of my best friends who I met through entirely different circumstances who lived like 2 hours away from eachother were literally cousins
Whats interesting about hearing Connor reply to Jarvis and Jordan is how his accent changes to being less and more British to each of them respectfully
I have no idea who you guys are, but I came here because Connor was on the show and now I'm 8 episodes into Sad Boyz and you guys are great, thanks for the mature and wholesome talk show content.
It’s nice to see a guest relate to and communicate with Jordan so much, usually it’s obvious they are more familiar with Jarvis, but it was nice to see Jordan and connor relate about the accent thing. I also want to tell Jarvis thank you for talking so openly about your bad mental health day on the last chad chad one. Its nice to know someone else out there understands what its like to get into your head about comments or situations and just ruminate on them.
I used to religiously watch CDawgVA when I was heavily into anime (and Black Butler) and seeing him again reemerge into my life recently has been so interesting. Once I was 16 watching his cards against humanity videos, now I'm 22 much over my anime phase watching the youtuber I used to be obsessed with showing up on a podcast of the youtubers I currently watch. The world works in very interesting ways.
Honestly I remember watching Connor when I was insanely into Black Butler, I stopped for a bit but when Trash Taste started up I've kept up to date w every episode and his content. I'd reccomened checking it out again, it's not really anime-focused and it's imrpoved a heck of alot since his Black Butler days.
for me it's the same thing just reversed, I used to watch Jarvis back in the day, stopped watching him and got really into connors content, and now they're collabing. weird stuff
half the time they talk about stuff I have absolutely no background info on or previous interest in and yet I listen to the whole thing cuz I love ppl being passionate abt their interests its so wholesome.
The BINDER shit is so cute my friend made me a binder of dragon ball characters and it was literally the characters in alphabetical order with their wiki descriptions 💀
I grew up pretty close to both football grounds in Liverpool and was also taken to lots of pubs around the area as a kid, so I _felt_ it in my soul when Connor was talking about being in those pubs lol
been hoping for a collab with you guys since connor's charity auction, i can't WAIT to watch this tonight!! edit: really felt the bit about burying your interests growing up. i was bullied growing up for the games i liked, the shows i watched, and the music i listen to. to anyone reading this, don't let other people stop you!! your passions make you unique. i'm happy to say that i blocked out the people who made fun of my interests, and i'm now set to study japanese at a top uk uni. always follow your passions, regardless of what others think
As both a language teacher and someone who has lived in Japan for 10 years and become fluent in the language, I absolutely agree that attitude can be one of the most important things to learning a language. No matter how long or religiously you study kanji or grammar, unless you have the confidence to put yourself out there and learn from your mistakes it is extremely difficult to reach fluency. Of course, dedicating time to studying is also important, but the thing that taught me how to really speak wasn't majoring in Japanese, it was needing to use it to communicate with my coworkers. Ultimately, language is a form of communication. You're gonna eventually have to use it for its intended purpose to succeed.
Connor really turns RUclips tropes on their head. He balances pushing creative limits while also knowing when to hit pause, insisting that an eager creator equals engaged audience. Oh, and he's also hosting a charity auction. Eat your heart out, multitaskers! I might as well give up now haha. Great ep!
When they were talking about growing up and their first reactions to anime, it unlocked a memory I'd completely forgotten. I remember I was watching Gundam Wing on toonami and one of the characters said damn. I grew up in a household where people didn't even say fart (but my mom would occasionally say "H e double hockey sticks" as if we all weren't literate enough to know what she was saying), so when I saw that I had to show my sister because she didn't believe me. Our minds were blown. Of course, when all of your friends do stuff regularly that your mother thinks is "of the devil" you learn to be rebellious pretty damn young, so my sister and I didn't mention it to my Mom. (Of course, she had no idea we were watching "anger cartoons" anyways, so explaining it would have been complicated.) I drink up toonami at my dad's house during the summer's and then would go to the libraries to Read Manga and transcriptions of anime episodes. I remember I found a website with all of the Inuyasha episode transcripts with little micro explanations of what was going on. Half the time it wouldn't make sense without the visual context but I spent years reading that shit. Edit: I just saw how destroyed my original post was due to autocorrect and bad voice to text. ^^; honestly, this was still rambly, but at least all the words are there.
I like listening to Connor guesting in different podcasts, different hosts brings out different stories. It's really interesting to hear things he doesn't have a chance to talk. Props to the hosts for asking different questions! TIL Connor knew Fairouz Ai.
"Just get drunk in Golden Gai with a bunch of Japanese men" is always the funniest advice to hear as a woman... 😹 like, definitely not going to do that but thanks
If the context was to practice Japanese, then the best advice I have for women, and guys too, is old obachans(grannies). They love to talk and talk and talk and are really sweet. Karaoke smoking rooms are also good. .
43:35 I wonder if he’s talking about 帰国子女 (kikoku shijo) here. It means sons & daughters to return to the country (after their parents taking them abroad), often translated as “returnees”. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re different after living abroad, but it’s kind of implied.
There's deff still a stigma toward them from those who never have left and older generations. It's the story I heard about with Koreans who went abroad (from friends from there).
Ah today the internet did a thing and created a new junction. we are blessed from places we didn’t know we needed. Mere humble human beings consuming content
The accent chat was so interesting! English being my second language I definitely find myself mirroring slightly the accent of whoever im speaking to but I had no idea this happened to native speakers as well
oh my sister and i BEGGED our mom until she finally agreed to buy us a subscription to shonen jump. it would come in the mail and we had to wait for the other one to be home or available to open it and read it at the same time. sometimes they came with like tattoos or stickers and i think once maybe a demo disc of an anime? though i might be remembering wrong. we cried when we couldn't afford to get it anymore. one piece, naruto, shaman king, bleach - and the teaser chapters for new manga they would include... gosh, ty for the unlocked memories, i haven't thought about shonen jump in years
39:51 agreed! It's the puzzle coming together to form a whole picture, language learning is the most satisfying and cool because of complexity. And it feels like you've cracked a secret code and unlocked a new part of the map in the game :D
Another thing about the very deliberate morning off is that you can actually get more relaxation done. If you have a lazy morning you'll probably just sit on your computer or phone scrolling but if I deliberately have a morning of relaxation I might go out for breakfast maybe boot up a game the kind of things that you wouldn't do if you were telling yourself that you're about to start work
so its funny, the way jarvis gaslit his peers into thinking one piece was called is how the greek dub read the name but with the way those letters were pronounce so "Ner Ek"
Crazy how up to 58:51 , & around there in general- is literally how SO many women(/people) feel about wearing makeup or cute clothes / getting dressed up, etc. ... yet it’s still so unfathomable & hard for esp. men, to see/realize let alone understand or contemplate. It’s not about the male gaze or “for men”. Maybe if more ppl compare it in this way, it’d be easier for them to comprehend/consider. Just a thought
I very much enjoyed this episode and through guest episodes I am finding this podcast and listening to it more, and the more I listen the more RUclips recommends it :) Yay
This is kind of fascinating as someone else that also lives in Japan. I'm Asian American though, so it's a bit different. I'm ethnically Chinese, but was always really into anime as it was accessible Asian media which the lack of in the US like pushed me to like more. No Asian themed not racist shows or casting actors that look like me? Alright, I'll go hard into Asian media that scratches that itch. Chinese media back then seemed boring/not as accessible even though it was available because of the politics stuff and Korean media wasn't on my radar then, so I went into Japanese. I was also watching anime raw even though I didn't fully understand it starting when I was 10 and passively learned hiragana and katakana and a few words. Then I started taking classes in high school and later ended up majoring in Japanese in university. But yeah, perspective-wise it wasn't a cool thing really to like anime necessarily, but like I was "ok" because I was Asian. For a lot of my friends and most of whom were also not Japanese, but another kind of Asian, it's all we had of a semblance of an Asian heritage. I ended up moving here though just because I just found that it fits more with the way I like to live. Plus there's just more safety in terms of street harassment and living as a woman. There's still some culture shock, but I love being left alone for the most part and the relative safety and not having random dudes on the street have an opinion on my haircut. It's legit refreshing to be in a country where girls getting short bob hair is normal. Also being Asian through the pandemic, I'm glad I was here and am here because of the increase of Asian hate crimes. Also, *having* functional health insurance is amazing. Telephone cards are just prepaid cards that you can use to make calls. Not necessarily sexual in anyway as you could use them to pay for international calls. You could use them for other kinds of calls too b/c it's just a prepaid card, but yeah. They are a 90s to even 2010s relic, but you could just buy them at a convenience store. A friend of mine I traveled with in 2012 got one to call her family in Canada. I had my phone on an international plan instead and rented a Jpn phone for local calls.
I also used to print out a lot of official and fan art alike when I had AOL 3.0 wayyyy back in the day! and I also put it in a binder! I’d print out my most favorite art pieces that would then go inside the binder and I’d look at them a lot.
I definitely notice myself doing the “nnn” thing when speaking to people here in Japan since moving here a few years ago lol it’s just an active listening skill that people do here. In the same way some people shake their heads yes when speaking to someone.
I did the same thing as Jarvis with the binder of anime print outs. I had printed out pics from trigun and tenchi muyo and outlaw star in sleeves next to my Pokemon cards. I also used to go to a cartoon planet fan site and print out the transcripts for entire episodes. I would just keep them in a folder and read them over and over since I couldn't just watch the episodes on demand hahah
What a great podcast collab! It’s crazy how the pandemic gave me the chance to get into watching anime and commentary RUclipsrs, and both Connor/CdawgVa and Jarvis are content creators I really enjoy. I was surprised to see this collab but glad that it’s out there! Excited to see RUclips communities connecting! 😄❤️🔥
Literally saw trash taste and sad boyz new episodes pop up in my podcast feed together. Didnt twig until later that there was a crossover haha. Love it
as someone who lived a long time in a predominantly asian community, no matter where you go there will always be someone at school who is a full on weeb. At my school it was a pinoy guy who always talked about jjba
1:03:04 a majority of my friends in college are international students (mainly korean) or at least english isn’t their first language and this happens to me too. the way i say things just automatically simplifies and adapts to be similar to how they talk so we can communicate smoother. i always thought it was weird but i guess it’s just normal.
19:08 it’s so funny, i literally did exactly the same thing last week but for TP as well. I don’t understand why they just don’t port it but tbh the wii u is a lot more comfortable so i’m kiiiindaaa thankful….
I remember after seeing Naruto first air in the US and watching it then one day at the local grocery store in the middle of no where Missouri I found monthly shonen jump and fell in love with reading bc manga was the first thing I was able to read as a read that my adhd wouldn’t give me a head. Plus it exposed me to all kinds of different manga and anime I never saw air in the us till years later and when stream was a thing. I was able to convince my mom to get me a year subscription(12 volumes) of shonen for my birthday. Best year of getting that big ass thing in the mail each month lol I later realized no one at the store gave a shit if I read the whole magazine in the store without buying, if it wasn’t a sealed volume, and since I couldn’t buy it I would go to the store with my parents all the time so I could read shonen jump.

Yeah totally agree with that. Turns out now that I’m in my 30’s, learning a language is really hard as an adult 😢
Yeah. That kind of mindset is more cringe imo. Lol. People just have to embrace the fact that they're dorks who will never be cool, and do whatever they want without the fear of being judged

Duuuude I’ve been waiting for this since they played Mario party together.
True
I’ve been needing this for a while
I feel like Connor knows everyone but also so does Jarvis and Jordan so I think sometimes I take it for granted when these collabs happen 😅
It's like when my two best friends I've never been in the same room with reveal they're friends... I'm so stoked to hear this conversation!
Lol I had this experience like a year ago, found out 2 of my best friends who I met through entirely different circumstances who lived like 2 hours away from eachother were literally cousins

No, not so much, please.
Whats interesting about hearing Connor reply to Jarvis and Jordan is how his accent changes to being less and more British to each of them respectfully

This is a colab I didn't know I needed to see. I'm diggin the amount of youtubers I like coming together.
Connor talked more about anime on this podcast than on his anime podcast with youtubers who make anime content
This is so fucking wild. Seeing Connor and Jarvis in the same room, talking... what the fuck? I love this.

"We would LARP in the streets" Jarvis, that's literally just kids playing. Such a weird way to phrase it though.
I mean, larping is just adults playing so it's not really weird
@@hazey_dazey I meant the phrasing was weird moreso than the act itself amigo! It just stood out a bit to me that's all, lol.
Awesome episode
Connor's brother being called Callum hit me like a truck
It's so cool to see CDawgVA once again collaborating on other podcasts I like how Connor is always doing sidequests
as someone who lived a long time in a predominantly asian community, no matter where you go there will always be someone at school who is a full on weeb. At my school it was a pinoy guy who always talked about jjba
Did not expect these 2 universes to collide
the most insane crossover omg
Loving the CROTCH in this episode
NEP EC!!! DUDE
Legit thought I was the only one.
Omg. Seen. This is what I feel.
Love the love for Baccano! that anime is amazing!
1:03:04 a majority of my friends in college are international students (mainly korean) or at least english isn’t their first language and this happens to me too. the way i say things just automatically simplifies and adapts to be similar to how they talk so we can communicate smoother. i always thought it was weird but i guess it’s just normal.
I totally get Connor’s “if it isn’t on my calendar, I get anxiety” thing. Everything has to be NOTED or I will NOT remember
19:08
it’s so funny, i literally did exactly the same thing last week but for TP as well.
Omg. I feel so lucky watching this collab lol both of my worlds just collided
A suprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
I leveled up and now im a Sad Monke
The fear of being cringe kept me from doing things for so long. Once you're ok with being a weirdo the world opens up and you meet so many cool people
When the Ludwig took over for a smear of a second at 58:00
The QTCinderella effect
IM GONNA CRY I LOVE THIS
Real big Amir Vibes from Jordan doing that bit at 1:12:48. Tickled me pink.
Wow... When I first saw One Piece, I had the EXACT SAME TITLE DISCREPANCY. And I never knew anyone else who had this issue.
Fantastic episode gentlemen!
larping in the streets about anime is so real 😭
nice to see Connor and his magnificent Welsh rooster.
great podcast
WHY IS HE EVERYWHERE?!
he really does do way too much. Honestly though: I wish I could be that outgoing, even if it seems absolutely _exhausting_
I feel like his is a very concrete step closer to my dream guest (Jerma) being on the show
