The gay fiction works that have had the greatest impact on me are: Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong, and Dancer From The Dance by Andrew Holleran.
What an awesome list of books. Edmund White is an absolute gem, have you read any of his other books? I really want to read Our Young Man sometime this year, never got around to it last year. I have had What Belongs to You on my shelf since early last year and still need to read it!! I've heard only great things.
Yes, I've read most of White's books. He's brilliant - his writing is endlessly engaging and intelligent. Ridiculously, I've still not read Our Young Man yet either. A copy is waiting on my shelf. Must get to it soon. Greenwell's novel is brilliant. I hope you like it.
I loved A Boy's Own Story and a couple of years ago read the sequel, The Beautiful Room is Empty, which is also a wonderful. I have Nightwood somewhere in my collection. Some of my favorite LGBT novels are Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote, and The Color Purple by Alice Walker.I know you don't read memoirs but I loved Mississippi Sissy by Kevin Sessums. I related in a way because his father was a basketball coach and mine was a sportswriter.
Walker's novel is wonderful! I've not heard of Sessums' book - I'll have a look for it. I do read memoirs sometimes - most recently Boy Erased by Gerrard Conley about his experiences growing up in the south and ex-gay therapy. It's being made into a film as well I believe.
I've only read What Belongs to You and Under the Udala Trees off of your list! It was wonderful to listen to you reflect on all of these books. Time to look up all the other titles. Thank you so very much!
Oh the power! I think you'd particularly like Vestal McIntyre's short stories in You Are Not the One. They're really lively, clever and fun. The story 'Octo' is a particular gem and you can read it online if you want a taster: opencity.org/archive/issue-11/octo
I just read What Belongs To You. I first heard of it on your channel and it was a truly remarkable book, one of my very favourite reads. The ending enveloped me for a good while and I felt emotions only a handful of other books have achieved. I rarely cry with books, but this one got it going.
I love LGBT books! I've watched tons of LGBT movies recently. I loved "pride", "Milk", "adele's life" "a single man" and "moonlight". The best for me are "holding the man" and "120 heartbeats/second". Amazing movies! My best books "oranges are not the only fruit" "A single man" "maurice" "my beautiful laundrette" and "the danish girl". I love edmund white' s books. I have also "l'eroe negato" by Francesco gnerre, a collection of "italian gay poets and writers" and "eminent outlaws. The gay writers who changed america" by Christopher bram. Yes, i m quite queer myself. Maybe lesbian/bisexual kind of thing, i presume
Interestingly I picked up The Starboard Sea as I shoved it into the sports category of this year's Read Harder challenge...and while there is some sailing it's really about a boy's life after his first love in a boarding school...not what you think at all.....a surprising five star read.... beautiful..
I can always count on you for some good recommendations. I think I'll be reading either Send Me or Blue Boy next, as they both sound rather interesting. Two of my favourites are Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin and At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill. The former is probably a better novel but I prefer the latter. I also throughly enjoyed The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
I love Baldwin's novel so much as well! And, crazily, I've not read O'Neill's novel yet. I've had a copy on my shelf for ages and I believe a new edition has just come out with an intro by John Boyne so I really do want to get to it. I liked Madeline Miller's novel a lot as well and I'm looking forward to her new novel coming out in the next several months.
At Swim, two boys is amazing. One of my favourite novels. I loved The line of beauty by Alan Hollinghurst too. What belongs to you will be published here this november so i expect to read it soon
I've not read any of these so thanks for the recommendation, I've also not read the book on the shelf behind you with the rainbow cover and I'd love to know what it is!. Because judging a book by its cover isn't that bad :p
Thanks for watching. I've sort of cheated you know because that rainbow book behind me isn't an LGBT book. It's a book of short stories: A Life of Adventure and Delight by Akhil Sharma. But I thought it made appropriate background. :)
Buying Edinburgh right now because I'm also a gay man from Maine. I'm surprised that there are books that fit my niche needs :D thank you for the recommendations.
Have you ever read "Paul's Case", the short story by Willa Cather? I thought it was a very sensitive story of a young gay person. I don't want to give away too much, if you haven't read it. Love Cather's writing. I enjoy your videos. Cheers!
As another gay man, I knew you would give amazing recomendations. Thank you so much! greetings from México

Thanks! I need to go back and read Chinelo's first book of short stories as well. I'd love to know your thoughts about the books you haven't read yet.
Eric Karl Anderson Is there one in particular I should start with? Say the word? And I will read/review it.

Eric Karl Anderson on it!
Other than Nightwood, I haven't read any of these! You've made them all sound so appealing, I am now making a list. Happy Pride!
Thank you! I hope you find something that you love as much as I loved all these books.

I loved the film 120 BPM. And the book of The Danish Girl is a fav as well.
Thank you so much for this list of recommendations. I always appreciate more suggestions for LGBTQ+ literature.
Awesome! Hope you connect with one or two. :)

That does sound interesting!
I forgot mentioning "before night falls" by reinaldo Arenas. Movie and book, both greats

Yes, that Hollinghurst is excellent and I'm eager to read his new novel soon.

Ha! That's hilarious! I'll have a nose at it anyway, since it's caught my attention :p
omg bless. You've given me 5 or so books to add to my list. x
Cool, glad I can tip you off to some good ones. Let me know what you think of them. :)

That's great. So glad I can connect you with it. Hope you enjoy it, Caleb!
We've come a long way, but have such a long way to go. All I can say is, when it comes to all the LGBT wins is Yah! Love Wins :o)

We love Gays the Word!
