We love the DK compact atlas! we now have three of them because each kid benefits from having his or her own. We also use the K12 Draw (Continent ) series and Settera map quizzes as independent geography work. We are ordering our study of counties this year by when we encounter them in the Drawing book so that we can make our own maps much like the maps book by the Mizielinskis. I really enjoyed the Nellie Allen North America book, but I got so tired of her superior colonial tone in Africa that I gave up and we started watching videos from the Geography Now series or the Gather Round playlists. I decided to do Europe rather than Asia this year. is the Allen Europe book better? We opted for the Gather Round Teachers guide this year; it is ok. We do love watching videos from different countries during lunch. Do you have any ideas of what to use as a guide like Allen's for Asia? Even if she had one I'm wondering if it would have the same tone as Africa and I am a bit nervous about that with South America.
My biggest takeaway from studying geography again with my kids is that topographical maps are important (start there!) because they can give you so many hints about people, industries, food, climate, and ecosystems. When you understand the physical geography, why things happened in history also makes more sense. Geography has had a huge impact on the movements of people, armies, and industries.

    Hey Joy,
So it looks like the description is from a previous video. In particular, I'm curious about the North's Geography that you mentioned at the end ... thanks so much!

I fixed all the links! Sorry for the trouble! I said the wrong name! I meant North America by Nellie Allen and linked it here: amzn.to/44YIKQ5

No trouble for me at all! Thanks for all you do! You are a wealth of resources and an example to us all.

Just wondering what you would suggest for children that are not comfortable drawing? Use copies of maps and color them in? Encourage them to draw and that they will get better over time? Trace the map? Great video!

Tracing is the absolute best! I ask my younger students to do their best. With my first and second grader I help them or only give them something else to trace- like a basic outline of the area we are talking about without all the small details. Or, you could print off the map and have them color in the water/land/mountains- if they are in the early elementary years. You could draw a bit for them and help them along to encourage them and show how it can be done. Lots of options!

Did you say Book of Marbles at the beginning? I think the description is from a different video. Thanks!

Sorry about that! It's the Book of Marvels the Orient and the Book of Marvels the Occident. I fixed the links and added the links. Here it is amzn.to/3PP2p0z

How do you incorporate the kinetic sand maps? Also, are you doing geography as a family subject? At what age do you recommend The Book of Marvels if you have mixed age groups?

Simple enough - they look at a country and map the shape of the country with the sand adding in rivers and mountains! We do geography as a family. The book of Marvels is great starting in upper elementary through adult!
