You hear a lot of famous songs with isolated tracks and many times you cannot tell what song it is as it sounds different without the backing instruments, with Randy's playing, since it is so melodic and rhythmic , you almost do not need the other instruments or vocals...it's great stuff onto its own

Like or dislike it, it's Randy's tone. It's unique to him and his playing/hands. Even if you heard a track from him you'd never heard before, you would know instantly it was Randy Rhodes. That's a pretty remarkable feat. Also, never realized how similar Randy and Dime's tone kind of is. They were both obviously going for something that sat in a certain place in a mix.

Randy's tone is much more like Jimi's tone than a modern metal tone. The dirty secret is that "scooped mids" is a great beginner tone. The guitar is midrange so you effectively mute it with an eq and it'll hide some of your mistakes. If you are playing with a midrange tone like this, you mess up , everyone hears it. It's a great tone for what it is and it works in the mix which is what matters. Randy wasn't playing in his bedroom like his critics are.

Insulate any of the famous monster guitar tracks. They all are very abrasive and are not full range. They stand out perfectly in a full band context. Without stepping on the other instruments and muddying everything together.

@@lifegoes2074 this is the ignorance that needs to stop, you're not getting that this was a generational player, he was far more technically gifted than everyone else, he had a sense of melody that was unparalleled. No sorry, most musicians don't learn everything a veteran player teaches them in 6 months at the age of 7. Coupled with being raised by an elite musician in her own right , his mom. Don't come in here suggesting that there are others who were technically more proficient because that's just incorrect
