Nutrition determines how many hit points you have. Welcome to the game! I have a few hundred hours in VS, and would be happy to offer suggestions but I also don't want to spoil too much for you.
Ah, that makes more sense. I was wondering why the wolf killed me in 2 hits in the beginning, vs the second time where I survived 2 hits. Probably because I had eaten some food, buffing my HP?
@@CellarPhantom yeah. As I said, I played all the way to the Bronze Age on another save before I started this series, and the whole time, I didn’t know that nutrition directly affected my total hit points 😂 It’s comments like these that help me out a lot 👍
Haha yeah. I had the mistaken assumption that predators spawn just as much in fields, so it didn’t matter as long as I cut trees down. Turns out that’s not the case 😂
Yeah, I have a lot of time in this game, and I wouldn't have done that. It's just a serious pain to have to worry about bears and wolves, all the dam' time.
@@azungu1190No, no it is not! If you see blueberries and horsetail, you’re in wolf country. Looks like it’s going to be a great play through - keep up the good work!
With stuff like knapping and clay forming, you can press C to pull out the character sheet, or hold Alt to free your cursor from your screen, in order to make your job easier. Both of those keys will free your cursor so the screen doesn't move when you move your mouse. Same goes for forging
VS is one of my favorite games, glad you're enjoying it. :D Regarding wolf spawning, spawn points for wolves (and hyenas, etc, depending on region) are determined by the terrain conditions that exist at worldgen, and are basically unaffected by any changes the player makes later. So even if you cut down every tree in a forest, it won't remove the spawn points. On the plus side, that also means you can plant as many trees as you like in a non-forested area, and it will never create new spawn points.
Hey, nice start to a new game! Minus the wolves, of course! Looks like other folks already chimed in with the advice and corrections I would have mentioned, so I'll just +1 to them!
Heyya! The game has a lot more depth than you can imagine. Let me explain some of the mechanics for you in case you feel confused. Nutrition: It's a mechanic inside the game, the more diverse your diet is you get even more HP thanks to it. Don't worry if you don't have every kind of nutrition the game will not kill you for only eating berries for 800 days. Temporal Stability (Sanity): Some areas are more stable and others makes you really insane. The more insane you are Drifters will spawn and become even stronger. So take care of your sanity by not staying too much in unstable areas or too much time underground. Temporal Storm: After some days, a Temporal Storm will happen. More Drifters spawn in the surface including some that normally spawn underground. You can't sleep through them unless you turn on that option on the world creation. Seasons: The classical 4 seasons. Spring and Autumn are both calm. Summer will make your crop harvesting less efficient, meanwhile Winter won't allow you to grow crops and animals you kill will yield less resources. One thing about Winter is you can make a Greenhouse, but usually it's a really late build usually since it takes a lot of resources to make. If you feel confused or need more in depth there's an ingame guide you can access by pressing H. If you hover your mouse on top of an item and press H you open the specific page for that item. And it even shows you all the recipies and drops of that item. Hope you can have fun with this game! And remember, patience is everything in this game!
I think settling in a forest is a perfectly valid option, as it allows you to be near hunt easily for early game bush meat. My current play through, I am finding it difficult to come across much of anything besides rabbits, which have a low meat content. Sure, you can’t cook bushmeat in a pot, but you get a lot more of it, so it’s a great early game strategy
fun fact: the average time most people can hold their breath underwater is about 40 seconds, which is what it is in default VS! (although being able to hold your breath for 1-2 minutes underwater obviously isn't abnormal)
That’s pretty sweet! I just remember competing with my brothers and pushing the boundary past a minute. Though underwater, I might panic and come up sooner 😆
I have to say I agree with your opinion of this game. Even without progressing much, you get pulled in. Minecraft is a great game too, But VS just scratches that bushcraft survival itch for me.
It's not on steam cause the creators don't want it to get more attention than they can handle but it's $21 on their page if you look it up! (I'm getting it the *second* I have the money for it 😤)
It's a minor thing, but I like to leave the lowest block of the tree trunk. It looks like a stump and really shows off how much of the forest I've chopped down. Just gives me a visual sense of satisfaction. Not sure why
Chopping down trees faster is to remove all the branches and leaves. You can hack off them with your axe to get better drops (Seeds and sticks). You can get more durable knives and axes in the Stone Age by harvesting bones to use for handles (plus bonemeal). The best ones are obsidian and bone.
Hey I didn’t realize that, thanks for sharing! Obsidian is great for Stone Age, so much better than stone or flint. I’ll look for it and try to craft it with bones.
In the beginning, start crafting 4 stone spears. Wolves can be killed in 3 spear throws. I generally keep the 4th spear as backup if I miss since I play with Commoner and I don't get the Hunter ranged accuracy trait. Also, use sticks to craft tool racks. They help in storing all the spears but you still have them readily available. For bear hunting, you'll need 6 bronze spears, preferably tin bronze or black bronze because they do 1.5 and 2 thrown damage more than the bismuth bronze one. A long bow is amazing when you sneak and stay far away, but smiting arrowheads is not very cost effective. Broken arrows cannot be salvaged, so you lose both the arrowhead and the feather.
Tyron and the awesome developers of Vintage Story originally worked on the Minecraft mod called Terrafirmacraft, a hardcore survival game.
