  • I've no doubt Autodesk will try and make this one as good as they possibly can following on from the disaster of AU2022 in New Orleans, so as much as I'm hyper focusing in this video on a few things that I'm not so sure about... which to be fair is the essence of AU, it may well still turn out to be a good event overall on balance.

    Regarding the hotel prices, my comments about them being triple the regular price was based off searches I did a few months ago... and particularly the Bellagio, but actually they're not too bad at the moment to be fair. Staying until the Friday or Saturday seems to be what causes the prices to escalate, but if you leave Vegas on the Thursday which is still a active AU day, the price isn't bad. Problem being, I wouldnt want to leave on the Thursday whilst there's still things going on!
    Also, I should clarify that I'm not disrespecting the efforts of resellers in general either. Some of them actually deliver good classes, the message here was that when there's potentially a huge amount of service providers delivering classes, the chances of landing on sales pitches is somewhat greater. But the implication wasn't intended to sound like they're all going to be like that.

    I actually love the fact that they went and made a letter to deliver to your managers. They want actual users to attend these things then they need to provide information to help them. I remember having to gather all the information up for my pitch one year. Being unfamiliar with the venue or even traveling and not having enough information to work with can be a rather large barrier to entry.

    Unfortunately, my first year not going in a looong time (for various reasons). Your "disconnect" statement (@17:24) is spot on! I can only image what will ensue during the Q&A after some of these sessions, where questions come from actual use case scenarios and can't be adequately addressed by rote answers.
    There's a massive difference (and inevitable disconnect) between insider knowledge (those on the development side) and industry experience (those on the front lines). Theory vs practice. Both have value, but AU has historically been more about learning "from others/experts" (and not necessarily from the presenters!!). Hopefully it will return to these roots.
    On one hand, I always hope AU is successful. On the other, if it is, future AU's will just be more of the same. 🤔

    Yep saw the same and wrote this one off comfortably. Hopefully not a trend for the way it moves in future. Maybe a sign of lack of excitement in their products vs competitors coming out of movements like NextDev in UK...
    Will be amusing to see how many times the advanced revit sample job shows up. Usually a clear sign of someone who hasn't got the real world case, or isn't allowed to show it.

      Thanks man, still a chance but we'll see!
      Re the resellers, I'm not sure if that was the message I was trying to project as I do respect their graft after having been one for years. What I was trying to imply is that they could be sales pitches, just be prepared for them maybe having an underlying agenda, but some resellers often do deliver valuable classes but with there being that many of them... there's just a greater chance of people landing on the ones with those agendas. Totally didn't want to crap all over resellers though or poo-poo their classes in general!

      @@Neil3Dthank you for clarifying that, as a first timer to AU I would really be pissed off to be simply advertised to for every session. Guess it’s a roll of the dice as they say. Thanks again Neil!

    Super!!! Neil, about the stagnation within the Autodesk team - straight to the point! They are already starting to lag behind competitors with Inventor. I have taught classes at AU. Both by themselves in a year. YES, the prep was very time consuming. I felt I gave my attendees value and real life examples to push them along with better practices. After reviewing the classes for this year, I will pass. BTW I have attended 13 times.

  • @REMISCStv

    Just the fact that F1 is essentially going on at the same time is what has me most worried about the show, and I live in Vegas so don't need lodging. I imagine the circuit will be in construction if not already done by then which will make travel a nightmare for so many people at AU. Miami F1 had over 200k people attending which I am sure many will be flying in the week of AU. ugg....too lake to change the date so it will be interesting to say the least.

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  10 месяцев назад +2

      Personally I think the attendance will be closer to if not greater than the COTA figures... it's Vegas, Formula 1 and a Vegas trip at the same time? People will be all over that... can't blame Autodesk for that as they'll feel that pressure and strain more than anyone during their organisation, but it will make the event a completely different kettle of fish to previous AU's in Vegas. So although it does seem like a fairy tale match of nailing both AU and F1 in the same trip, I reckon the reality will be very different. Plus I heard that the Venetian is kicking all Autodesk attendees out of the hotel on the Thursday... so any additional days will need to be rebooked at the extortionate rate being charged to attending F1 visitors

    2023 was potentially my first AU, but I looked at the entire list of classes and found the two you noted (the community college prof class does look interesting) and not much else. My interest was/is getting better at Fusion 360 on the 3D and ECAD sides pure and simple. I have not been drinking the Vault Kool Aid, the big data cool aid and I am pretty sure I have a clear handle on my workflow. I just want to learn the tool and its not there. I also spend time in the STEM world trying to put the fun back into it and that course you identified would be great. I will look at the "digital" or "virtual" sessions and hope the very few things I would be interested are available there. If I want a sales pitch, I need to have a problem first, I don't see that Autodesk has really got a grasp of my problems, but I am pretty sure other customers would get it, so if Toyota or another true customer can relate the path they have taken and what worked and did not work, that is what would make the huge cost of attending work for me. Not this year..

    I would suggest that is a pretty fair assessment. It could just be my observation, however most people I speak to who have been to AU in the past 5 years or so are no longer on the tools. I would agree the best knowledge or training I ever had came out of AU. Classes from John Bennett (Graitec) have been invaluable to my professional career.

  • @wrpfohl
    @wrpfohl 10 месяцев назад +1

    I totally agree with what you have said. I have never gone to AU but I watched the online classes after the event. It seems less and less that the "classes" are geared around work flows common to the software and or industry that the software is designed to address.
    I enjoy and appreciate classes where the author addresses a common problem that the software can solve. I'm convinced that Autodesk has lost touch with it's userbase.

      Unfortunately the AEC industry has been convinced that they should stop using software as a tool to complete a task, and they should allow the software to lead all of their thought processes. Having worked in the industry for over 30 years I have yet to see a piece of software solve all of a projects issues in the real world

    Autodesk if you’re reading this, why not focus the spotlight on new and experienced users, and how they use Inventor in their job. What tips and tricks they’ve learned over their careers. New and even experienced users will benefit from learning and utilising the software. With better ‘tutorials’ and industries opened up to show engineers what they do day to day, market share is likely to increase over time as more and more engineers recommend the software they can better understand and utilise, just my guess.

  • @mayj1973
    @mayj1973 10 месяцев назад +1

    Plain and simple... If you don't use it, you lose it. Current ADSK personnel need to come back into the trenches every now and again. I started attending AU in 2008. Once they started pushing cloud-based solutions and Fusion, a lot of the Inventor users felt they were being forgotten. Also, I have noticed over the years the senior level software leaders that have jumped ship or been let go. Old school admins also have left. the "good" classes seem to always fall in the same time slots. For a software package like Inventor and Vault a user should never feel like they are signing up for a filler class. I am going but not feeling all that great yet, hope it works out.

    Agree with you on the AU items. I have attended for years as well and last year was an absolute disappointment and the combination of items touched on in this video are reasons I have also decided not to attend this year. It’s a lot of money to attend for a 2-3 day sales pitch
    Same experience with Rockwell Automations RokLive events (has changed names over the years). Last year was an absolute flop. Ran short on food, attended labs that were nothing more than a pdf handout and a RUclips link, and classes that were repetitive and felt as though classes taught just weren’t adding the value anymore. Automation fair is the “free” event. That was the place to offer sales pitches. I am one of many who I have spoken with that have decided to sit this year out for Rockwell as well (now it’s combined into single event in November in Boston).
    Hard to justify the time and expense to get the pitch versus the excellent seminars and labs with attention I have received in the past

    Hotels are actually fairly reasonable. $250 or less. It's been worse prior years. Just returned from Denver and my "discount rate" as $279 (regular was over $400/night). None the less, I'm likely with you. There's an Autodesk meeting my industry will have that I'd attend but not sure I can even get to it without a pass. Ideally I'd like to get an expo only pass but they don't offer that.

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think that rate is a special limited negotiated rate for registered Autodesk guests only at the Venetian, and they insist all guests leave on the Thursday which is a problem if your only options for a flight is the weekend. I normally stay at the Bellagio for AU, it's usually around £2000-ish for flight and accommodation for 6-7 nights off memory, but this year I was getting quotes from around £3500-4000

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  10 месяцев назад +1

      Just did another quote and the Bellagio is £4185 for 6 nights, minimum, that's probably with an awful flight. There are other hotels to be fair that are coming in much cheaper so I was probably a bit off by saying they'd trebbled in price, the Bellagio is just over double, but that's always been my go to hotel for Vegas

    Well, I think the future needs data scientists, not new batches of cad professionals. I'm neither, as dreaming up VB code lines is not my forte, as is modeling for the establishment. It appears as if a new role creates itself in that kind of scenario. Does that relate to Autodesk people providing classes? Not at all.

    First, US based LOOOONNGGG (decades) time F1 fan here.
    AU 2023, meh. AU seems to be focused on the AutoDesk Whales (Vegas pun intended).
    Reviewed the AU sessions, not much of interest for us to go really, so skipping yet again this year, even likely skipping online sessions for second time in a row. There might (???) be one online session to watch, F360 Configurations, never really used it as seemed like there are a few quirks…but might watch. Other than that did not notice anything of interest. Something like REAL parameter management improvements (longtime sore point here), that would have caught our eye. Seems like F360 is kinda stalling out lately? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️. Just a personal observation.
    So AU is officially MEH in the office, kinda like what ZBrush Summit has become after Ma$$on, but that’s another gripe session.
