  • I first heard this song on a Tim O’Brien album and then much later found the original by Ola Belle Reed, I’ve since become a big fan of Ola Belles songs and her sound. Her songs feel as if they were as old as the hills but she wrote and played right up until the mid 1980s.
    Lyrics below;
    Born in the mountains,
    Fifty years ago
I traveled the hills and valleys
    Through the rain and snow.
    Seen the lightning flashing,
    I've heard thunder roll.
    I've endured,
    I've endured.
    How long can one endure?
    Barefoot in the summer,
    Running through the fog.
    Too many mouths to feed,
    They couldn't hold us all.
    Sent to church on Sunday,
    To learn the golden rule.
    I've endured,
    I've endured.
    How long can one endure?
    I've worked for the rich,
    I've lived with the poor.
    I've seen many a heartache,
    There'll be many more.
    I've lived luck and sorrow,
    Been to success and stone.
    I've endured,
    I've endured.
    How long can one endure?
    I've endured,
    I've endured.
    How long can man endure?
