How I blindly get assistance to shop! Part two Target shopping adventure

  • This is part two of my two part blind quarantine Target shopping adventure.
    In this portion of my shopping adventure, Arabella is guiding me from the pharmacy all the way to the front of the store to the customer service counter.
    As you will see/hear in the video, Arabella did an amazing job guiding me to customer service where I then was paired up with Sophia, a sweet sales associate. Manager Jeremy was amazing at taking care of me making sure I was connected to a helpful individual.
    Sophia was so lovely. I love working with individuals who have such a kind disposition and a sweet heart. She pushed the shopping cart as Arabella and I followed her around the store to get the things I needed.
    But honestly, nine times out of ten, on all my shopping adventures, I am always interacting with such wonderful helpful kind individuals. I believe that when you approach individuals and interact with them with kindness, the kindness is returned back to you. This is one of the beautiful blessings about my blindness, I am always given these sweet opportunities to meet lovely people who make my days brighter. Just love shopping here at my local Target store! Manager Jeremy, and all the amazing sales associates are always so wonderful and make my shopping adventure less stressful and so much sweeter 💛

      Manager Jeremy just commented through his Vacant_Exploration RUclips channel name. He is trying to grow his channel, more active though on Instagram. I have copied and pasted his comment below for you all to read, but encourage you to scroll through the comment section to find the comment yourself so you can give him a reply and definitely give him support on his page and channel. 💛. Vacant_Exploration, Thank you everyone for your overwhelmingly positive response to this video! Was and has always been a true pleasure to assist Joy when she visits our store. I need to give a BIG shout out to Joy: we had no idea she had such a HUGE RUclips following and honestly I was not aware that she was filming almost the ENTIRE time, she is stealth! I had not watched here videos prior to this and thought she'd just be pasting some snippets together. Here videography is superior to that done by many who can see. A woman of remarkable talent!

      Nah,not completely blind. She went around the stand before coffee aisle. You normally would run into it because the dog did not lead. And she was able to touch the coffee box when held up. She reached out with second lady holding rubber band and hit with no problem.. She is like me, blind in one eye, 20/800 in other eye, no peripheral. Completely blind carries a Completely white cane, visually impaired is red and white and deaf and blind have candy cane stripes. I say this because you seldom get help at any of these stores!!! I only go with my husband or daughter!!! Too much chance during virus.

      Hi there, just heard your comment come through and I had to reply. Well, I am 100% completely blind. I have no light perception whatsoever, and I also wear prosthetic eyes on top of my very small eyes. Go to my prosthetic eyes playlist on my channel if you want to learn more. I am able to do so much just through touch and through sound. And I get amazing assistance like you see in this video everywhere I go. I have learned that if you ask with a joyful gracious attitude, people are more than willing to go out of their way to give you a helping hand/eye :-)

    I'm Deaf and worked at Target. When Blind persons would come in my team members were confused when I would include cost with items. Also when checking out I would scan the item, tell them what item it was and how much along with the new total. Eventually some other coworkers started to copy, and do the same.

      Unfortunately not all companies could afford to actually do that. It would be amazing if the big retailers did this though. there is no reason you can't have someone on shift who gets a little extra training in certain common things that their customers experience. I was the only person at my location that knew sign language and we were located right by a deaf school. If I wasn't there they had such a hard time doing things. I eventually just gave them all my work schedule to make life easier, but there's no reason they couldn't have just hired a person for each shift they just didnt care and didn't like paying extra money for the skills you had. They were mad they had to pay me an extra .20 an hour for knowing a different language.

    • @meep5080
      @meep5080 4 года назад +25

      @Stephen C no one said it was a legal duty, it would be NICE and there is no reason that a private corporation with the means to do so can't hire people that make sense for their communities. If someone in your community often has a need for extra help and you have the ability to provide that then it's obviously the nice thing to do. It doesn't need to be mandated, but it would be nice if our world DID cater to people in a better way and wanted to make your existence a better experience. I jump through a million hoops to learn and provide for humans I come across. I moved to an area with a lot of Spanish speaking people, I'm not fluent, but I learned the language enough to make them feel more comfortable. I grew up around deaf people, so I learned sign language. I grew up around blind people so I learned to help them navigate. I see humans needing help with anything ever and I try to be the person they need and there is no reason that companies that bleed money private or not can't provide better. Most companies just don't enjoy paying people more money though, so your skills that other people don't have don't matter to them even though they expect you to do more work than the others because of those skills.

    • @Dontstaylonely
      @Dontstaylonely 4 года назад +24

      @Stephen C what a disgusting mindset to hold. How much has private profit warped your brain that you think a multi billion dollar corporation doesn't or shouldn't spend the funds to be accommodating to all shoppers?? You will get a sharp shock if you ever become disabled or have any additional needs someday.

I've helped a lady in a wheelchair shop not long ago when I seen she was struggling and couldn't reach the items she wanted, she was just getting what she could reach. I politely asked if she needed a hand and she was so grateful. I walked her through the entire store. She was so happy to be able to get the brands and products she wanted. We should always help our neighbors.

      So cute. I use to work at a restaurant when I was a teen, with a deaf customer.
      At first she was kind of stand-offish. She would just hand me a sticky note with her order and didn’t really want to interact. Like AT ALL. She became a frequent customer. So eventually, over time I would just start gesturing towards things and she would nod. (It was kind of like a chipotle, no formal menu- so I think the gesturing was okay in that case)
      I got her to smile one day by not giving up on making sure she was happy with her order regardless of the communication differences, and seeing her face light up as our tiny little relationship grew, is something I will never forget. 💕
      And then I went to college and I wonder what Key Lime Pies, extra whipped cream, lime slices and a coke- To Go is up to these days.

He uses a cane to get around and preferred to hold the elbow of whoever is guiding him around the store. While guiding him I use helpful directions so I am not tugging him around. I also let him know if we have to stop to let someone by, or if we are getting close to the checkstands as well as explain what we are passing or getting close to. For the items he wants I let him know the variety we have including product size/quantity, flavor/variety, and cost comparisons. I also have him hold the product to make sure he is familiar and aware of what he is buying. He is pretty independent and walks to and from the store and has been coming for quite a long time. One of my favorite customers. One of his all time favorite things is ringing the bell we have outside if the store for the bottle drop. I always ask him to make it super loud so I can hear it from inside the store. He's super awesome

I don't blame Sophia for not knowing where to look one bit though! Target has tons of dog treats! Hopefully Arabella liked the ones you picked out for her! Such a sweet mama to get her treats! I love the relationship you two share, it is truly special! By the way you have the most beautifully kind and sweet voice I have ever heard! Speaking and singing! I could listen to you all day! Joy I work retail and I sympathize with you because i know how terrible some people can be with directions. What I recommend is calling the store and speaking to a manager and letting them know you’d like assistance and if you have any preferences like someone who is really familiar with the store or a manager to help you but just let them know before so we can better schedule people because even without COVID scheduling is rough and retail can be crazy. It will make your life easier and hopefully you’ll get someone who is really knowledgeable about the store and can help you without you having to work so hard to get the help you need. I wish I could help you shop it gives me so much frustration seeing how much you were struggling to find your products and for them to give you correct information on how to navigate. If you’re ever in San Marcos California stop by stater bros markets for grocery shopping and id me more than happy to help!

      I agree, a courtesy call to the store would be helpful. Years ago I worked at Target and we had a nearby group home that would bring over their house mates to shop. They would always call first and give us a list for each shopper. We would already have an employee assigned and ready to shop with each person as they arrived to the store. Knowing what they were shopping for and possible brands they liked made the experience better for both the shopper and employee.

    Do staff at stores ever remember you, and try to get the same employee to help you shop? Or do you try to remember the names, and make a request? When I worked at a grocery store there was this old man that was blind that came in, and my manager would always get me to go help him shop if I was working that day. He didn't have a guide dog though, so what we did was he would hold on to the handles of the buggy, and I would control it from the side. I loved chatting with him, and always wished his list was longer so we could hang out more, haha.

I’m temporarily living in the Dominican Republic right now and there isn’t much assistance for the disabled or visually impaired. I’ve seen a few blind people walk onto dangerous streets and cars barely slowing down. I’m glad the U.S. and many other countries implement ways of making daily life accessible for many. The beautiful perspective God has given me has truly open the eyes of my heart to see this world in a gorgeous light. My heart is full of so much joy, compassion, and love. I want to impart that so we can make this world a better place, and to hopefully inspire others to never give up on their journey no matter how dark their skies may appear 💛

    I just love watching these videos of yours. I interned in Congress during my time in the US (I’m German but I lived in both GA and Washington DC) and saw a man with a cane running into a partial wall. I immediately felt sorry and asked if he needed help, he told me that he was looking for a vending machine to get something to drink. Because I didn’t know about one I offered him to guide him to the cafeteria. He was so happy and such a sweet man. So I hooked my arm into his (I asked beforehand and he preferred it that way) and guided him using my voice and motion. As I asked him what he was doing inside the office building he told, that he was a lobbyist, I asked him what he was lobbying for and he said “some blind stuff” and laughed. He was sooo funny. My friend then asked him about his tie which showed the San Francisco 49ers logo and asked him if he was sad about them loosing the Super Bowl. He laughed again and said he was glad he didn’t see it. It was a great great day and I still think about it very often!

      Poot i used to work at target. She might be in the style/clothing department. The girls who work in style usually are more fasionable and are allowed to dress more casual. More burgundys and dresses and cardigans and clothes like that.
      On top of that, the people who work in the style department usually stick to just that department. It wouldnt be unordinary if an employee who works in style doesnt know where something like caramel flavored coffee for example would be stocked

    I think the service is ok but Target needs to be a bit more structured and proactive in their service. The personal shopper should know the product lines and either ask if she's looking for a specific product or would like to explore things more. Like in the coffee aisle, I'd ask if she had brand or roast level preference and then also explain the pack size on the shelf. Loyalty and building sales tends to come when customer service is optimized for each client.

      i agree, but i don’t think miss sophia was a personal shopper. i’m a cashier and have been pulled to help blind customers find some groceries. it would be nice though to have someone more familiar with the layout to help customers with special needs, maybe even a team who is trained in communicating with customers with disabilities. perhaps someone fluent in sign language and someone who can properly give directions to a blind person.

      I manage my entire RUclips channel completely blind on my own. I have built it from the ground up since 2014 just figuring it out using my voiceover accessibility on my iPhone to do everything. Through listening, through finger swipes, voice dictation, touch typing, and finger twists, I am able to do everything you can do on your phone. I film, edit, upload, read, and reply to all of you with no eyesight whatsoever. I take such pride in my content and my channel. I absolutely love all the hard work I have to put into it to make it what it is. You all are worth every exhausting adventure, and all the hard work it takes to put in to creating these videos for you. Through all of my challenges in my life whether they’re physical, emotional, or technological LOL, they make me stronger, and more determined to do better, be better. I’m so glad you’re enjoying my videos, hope to hear from you again. Many blessings :-)

    I have a lady that comes in every month and she’s super sweet. She knows where most things are in the store but I never realized how much we assume things until I helped her out. I would accidentally assume that she saw what was in front of her. It was a really cool experience and it’s so cool how much she could just hear and zone onto one sound.
    She was able to follow me with my own footsteps and distinguish other people’s.
