The reference is NOT to König Ludwig II who built Neuschwanstein (who lived at the end of the 19th century) but to an ancestor/grandfather of his (who lived at the beginning of the 18th century) - Ludwig I who got married to Therese (hence Theresienwiese), which is honored by the celebration ever since! Most royal names are traditionally passed on through generations….

OK, just to get some facts straight: Taxi rates don't change during Oktoberfest. They are legally the standard rate. Believe me, I have been a cabby at Oktoberfest for way too many years. Of course, there are special situations, when 100K folks leave the venue after 10pm closing time, but there are only 5 K taxis all over town. I had a guy flag me down with a 500 EUR bill, to bring him to the Hilton 15 minutes away. I could have written a book every year I drove Oktoberfest. Like the campground in the south of Munich, folks are so flipping drunk, they have multiple person tents for accommodation, and often folks have no idea why they have a stranger lady/lad beside them when they wake up, how she/ he got there, and what happened. But then, on the other side, Oktoberfest is the single one occasion, where most folks meet to be a couple and get married after a while. 'In vino veritas'.

    Hi Joel, WARNING!
Oktoberfest doesn’t actually happen n October, this year it happens from September 16 to October 3rd. It’s one of those misnomers in life.
It is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, running from mid- or late-September to around the first Sunday in October, with more than six million international and national visitors attending the event

Oktoberfest used to take place in October, but people complained about the colder weather, killing their mood. Then, Oktoberfest moved to the middle of September, and so much better! It's easier to figure out which day it starts: the first Saturday after 15 September is the start day. If 3 October falls on Friday, it's automatically extended to Sunday, 5 October as it happened a few times before.

Same…I am not too fond of these sorts of drinking fairs, …. Only exception is the Carneval in Cologne, because the drinking is mostly done after the parade or before….the parade can be watched by everyone and if you are past a certain point in life where getting laid and drunk isn‘t on the top of your list you continue celebrating at someone’s home.

Oktoberfest is definitely worth to visit. There are so many nations within a flair of Bavarian culture… for me this mixture is great.
The beer is excellent but you should try also some from quite small breweries everywhere in Bavaria. They also produce very good stuff, some are little diamonds.
But don‘t drink more than your body can tolerate. As long as you are nice and friendly, nearly all Bavarians are supportive and they accept also if people are drunk. But if you start to become unfriendly or even aggressive this can change within a second. If you offend their girlfriends - even by mistake - this can end up badly. A lot of Bavarians are hard working on their farms. They are strong and this is way different to bodybuilders. So always stay friendly and you will meet friends instead of waking up in hospital. 😉

And look at any Oktoberfest beer made in the USA. It will say “Märzen style.” März is the month of March. Prior to refrigeration the brewers in Germany would produce this beer during March that would store in cellars and caves throughout the warm months. No brewing took place between April 1st and Oktober 1st. So...what do you do to get rid of left over stock? Throw a party! Beginning in September.😊

Yepp, can't recommend Feli strong enough. As a Munich native she knows the ins and outs of the Wiesn. Only a little warning: the small hill behind the large number of toilet stalls isn't known as the Kotzhügel, the barf hill, for nothing. It's fairly common to find passed out drinkers lying in pools of vomit back there, despite the best efforts of the paramedics to keep on top of the situation. Oh, and should someone become too inebriated but still friendly (or very quiet suddenly) it's no problem calling the security in. They are usually very good natured about it and are more than willing to assist, not throw them in jail. Sure, if someone gets violent they may have to take them into custody but even that will be done with the least amount of force or injury necessary.
So, have fun there but do be aware of Bockbier, which may have up to 8% or even 9% alcohol to the same Mass/liter of beer. That requires a good, fatty food foundation to not knock you out too easily.

I'd like everyone to have fun at the Wies'n, but I'd like to point out that you can easily spend €500 in an afternoon and evening. If it's worth it to you, then you can have a lot of fun at the Wies'n.If you want to go on the rides, drink a few Maß, eat something (preferably roast ox or very tasty fish cooked over an open ember, at the Fischer-Vroni) then €500 isn't much.

  • @1983simi

I'm born and raised in Munich, so of course I've been to Oktoberfest plenty of times. When I was around 22 despite back then still being a girl of maybe 120 lbs I would easily finish around 4-5 Mass (litres) over the course of an afternoon and still somehow find my way back home on my own. Today I'm done for a few days even after half a litre. Ah... old age... And it's weird it's been quite long since I've been to my last Oktoberfest but just seeing the scenes from the tents makes my muscle memory go off. The way people 'cheers' each other, the small rituals around it and the songs... I'm instantly ready, want it or not.
Btw. I disagree with the point of locals being 'expected' to wear Tracht (the traditional dress). That's a pretty recent development over the last 10-15 years. I never even once wore a Dirndl to Oktoberfest. Just never had the spare cash for a full traditional outfit I'd use at max 2 weeks a year, and even IF i had that kind of outfit, I'd certainly not wear it to an event where chances are high sooner or later someone will either throw up on me or I on myself... or you just fall into the dirt somewhere... believe me it happens all the time. Not in a minimum 500 euro outfit, sorry.
I always went in jeans or maybe a skirt. My older brother too who is also raised in Munich never went in Bavarian clothing in the 70s. Well into the 90s and early 2000s only people from the surrounding villages/small towns would wear Tracht (which btw. is a traditional farmer's dress and not the traditional dress of city dwellers)... and of course tourists - both foreign and German - in ill-advised attempts to 'fit in' (a proper Tracht has signifiers for the exact region of Bavaria you come from, anything else is a costume imo).
Anyway, tbh honest though by my late 20s I had slowly started to fall out of love with Oktoberfest. Personally, at this point I find it too touristy, too expensive, and yeah, partly a bit too degenerate. As a local there are plenty of smaller more traditional and more chill Oktoberfests or general Volksfests around to enjoy. Spoilers: at those proper traditional smaller Volksfests nobody cares if you don't come in Tracht. Real Bavarians don't need to proof with their dress they're Bavarian. You hear it instantly when they open their mouth to talk ;)
All the same, if you're young and only just discovering Germany, I do think Oktoberfest is something you should try to experience at least once (and if you like it and have time and money maybe a few days in a row... why not?). In that case some advice from a local:
    - On weekdays you'll usually get a seat easily until the early afternoon, on weekends you have to come early early.
    - Trying to get into a tent early has the upside that people are still relatively civil when you arrive, but I'd only do it if I don't plan to stay all day (you will end up comatose on the nearby lawn if you do).
    - Later in the afternoon if you're just 2-3 people you'll always find a spot to sit somewhere but you have to be mentally prepared for some people already being unreasonably hammered. You better know how to read the room well to avoid unpleasantness.
    - For the love of God have some substantial food (high in fat and salt) BEFORE you start drinking.
    - Whatever rides you want to ride, ride them BEFORE you start drinking too.
    - Follow the locals in their cheers, song and dance rituals best you can. It will be appreciated and you will make friends.
    - Don't carry any vital documents (passport, credit cards etc) with you. Not only are there pickpockets, but chances are also high you'll end up in a state where you just lose stuff. Prosthetic legs(!!!) have ended up in Oktoberfest's lost and found office. Only take the cash you think you'll want to use (also it's a natural cut-off that may save you from ending up in hospital)
    - If the mood seems to flip in a tent or your corner of the tent, get out of there. Try to be patient and jovial with everyone, but if someone starts staring you down red-faced, just get out of their sight. Remember, people are very drunk and there are massive heavy steins standing around everywhere. Just avoid confrontation. It's not worth it.
    - Talking of Mass glasses (steins), you are NOT allowed to carry your Mass out of the tent and home with you. You can buy a commemorative stein at the tourist shop, but the Mass glasses in the tent belong to the tent owner.
    - Don't forget to tip the waiter or waitress.

Well, the Octoberfest is getting more and more commercialized indeed. But the basic feeling and atmosphere always stays the same. And if you want to grab a piece of the original idea, just pop into the "Old Wiesn", where everything is much more traditional and crowded mostly by native Bavarians rather than tourists. Anyway, the Octoberfest will definitely be an experience you'll never forget. Whenever you return to Munich, let me know. I'll buy you a beer.

I´d rather use the money to travel to a bordering state or spend three days in another german town/city or at a big music festival for the weekend with great bands.

so far as I know the Oktoberfest rised up through the wedding of their [Bavarian] King Ludwig ...
It got nothing to do with "Neuschwanstein" !! My hometown is Dortmund - quiet close [50 mls] to The Netherlands: so I'm able to announce something about the Orange Colo ur, although their flag is absolutely different [no Orange inside] ...
"Neuschwanstein" is finanied by "Prussia" to build his "Favour Castle" ... to Ludwig II. [it means the Second] .... buil round about 1890 ... after he was killed in a sea ...
Stefan, Dortmund [not all of Germany only exist of Bavaria !!]

I have lived a couple of years in Munich, and went one time to the Oktoberfest. It's real charmy and funny, but TOO EXPENSIVE.
You need at least 30€, and if you are tourist surely more, because you will buy so many things you have never seen or tasted.
But if you have seen big fairs in many other german cities, it's not so magnificent. The only striking difference are the special bavarian folklore dresses (called 'Trachten' in german), that many tourist find funny, but germans from other regions often simply ridiculous, in special the 'Lederhosen' (means leather-shorttrousers) and rustic chequered shirts. Maybe of typical kelt tradition origin. But the typically big bosomed bavarian ladies look very sexy in their 'Dirndl' dresses.

In addition to typical old Bavarian music, exactly those songs are played that many guests from all over the world know. Yes, you have to experience it, you would be amazed and want to go back there every year.
In addition to beer, you should watch the parade on the first Sunday (parade of traditional clubs, shooting clubs, bands, old crafts and professions in nature, etc.). There is also a evant specifically for LGBT people and there is also a special children's event. Police and paramedics are everywhere so everyone can feel safe.
