Good morning AGAIN Doc. Yes, it's me for the 2nd time this morning....sorry. I just now found this Video and I don't believe I asked you this in my earlier comment. I play quite a few songs where I'm needing to get Harmonic Feedback. Now, using this Live, or in any situation, the Harmonic Feedback I obtain, if I run from either my Floorboard or Direct Out from the FRFR, will the Harmonic Feedback transmit from the Outputs of the Floorboard or FRFR or will I need to Mic the FRFR for the Feedback to be heard? Sorry....but I definitely THANK YOU for your time, help and reply!!
You can get natural feedback just from the speaker it self as long as you are playing as a certain volume. I even get it just sitting in front of my studio monitors but maybe to a lesser degree.
I've had this Headrush frfr108 for a couple months.. but first used it on a gig with my Line 6 Helix just last night. WOW!! I can't believe how great it sounds!!! I just had it on the floor behind me angled upwards... and it sounded incredible. Plenty of bass.. plenty of punch. No harshness.. just sweet tone. My only concern is mine gets really warm almost hot on the back panel after it's been on a while. I also have a Headrush frfr112 and a QSC K12.2.
i am tossing up between the 112 or the 108. i like the smaller size but want decent blues amp punch the same as a fender twin in a modeller. what can you tell between the two?
@@Glensully I think you'll be amazed at the huge tone that comes out of that thing. Even Fender Twin style cleans. I have the 112 and it stays home lol. The 108 is SO much easier to carry around and has plenty of power.
So what do we buy if we want the guitar-in-the-room sound, but also want to use the HeadRush or some other modeller for the amp and cab emulations? Laney FR cab?
Great sound as allways my friend! The BluGuitar Amp1 is an incredible Amp also. Thomas Blug knows something about tone! I own both his signature guitars (Vintage "Summer Of Love" - Hendrix Monterey inspired, and his Vintage "Signature").
Thomas Blug is my tone crush. The Amp1 will be my go to amp the rest of my life. Weighing at 2lbs and having 4 channels that is MIDI switchable is a no brainer.
@@DoctorMcFarlandStudios I sure hope so! I was going to get a new board for my pedals, power supply, switcher cables etc. but it was going to cost more that the headrush. So I decided to take a leap of faith on it. Hopefully I can get my head around it and get it to sound good. Your videos inspired my decision. You do great work!
My electric guitar JP Majesty has a piezo. Will this speaker perform with my guitar if I want play the piezo acoustic sound where a regular guitar amp chokes that sound off
Well you have to have a mic pre since the 108 only accepts line levels. Using a small mixer would probably work ok but getting a battery powered amp with line and mic inputs would work better for busking.
@@DoctorMcFarlandStudios indeed mine just arrived and hooked it up to my HX Stomp and sounds almost as good as tube amp and cab! Saves me money to not buy any more expensive tube amps and cabs too.
So you think this would be good for running a helix at home for practicing ? It seems to be the most affordable option other than studio monitors which I have and don’t have faith they will do what this will.
Thanks Doc! It is a great review. May I ask how would this Headrush frfr108 compare to your KRK V6s (correct me if Im wrong about the model but I believe they are some high-end series of KRK) in the guitar tone category? :) I am in a dillemma of whether getting a pair of high end monitors or some mid-tier monitors with a 8 inch frfr like this for Neural DSP plugins.
Do you still use an amp? I'm looking at ditching my jcm 2000 and 4x12 and getting one or 2 of these and a headrush pedal board, for a covers band. Is this what I should be doing?
@@pauljosse it’s quite clear to me that the sounds you can can get will be more useable and much more convenient if you did that but I’d get two speakers and run it stereo.
I see you have a set of Rokits behind you... could you just have two HR FRFR instead of the KRK's? The reason I ask is I am looking for a studio speaker for my productions and I want to free up space by selling some of my guitar amps... would a pair of these cover me for playing backing tracks and jamming and making tracks on DAW/DAWless productions... I have a couple MFX boards that have IR and such..
That issue with cables pushing against the ground when in wedge configuration is kind of a deal breaker for me. But I wish that wasn't the case because the price is right.
@Doctor McFarland Studios This is essentially the same money as an orange rt20. Do you think it’s good value compared. I have an mx5 and am looking for a new combo setup for home play. I had an rt35 orange but honestly it was way more amp than I needed for my house.
The 20RT is ok. I prefer the 35RT since it has an FX loop. That makes it more flexible. SDNA has a new AI IR option for when you want to plugin to the input of an amp instead of the FX return which the 20RT doesn't have.
Thank you for your review, very useful! Just a couple of questions: would this monitor work well as any other monitor, or is it "taylored for guitar modelers"? Since it's an FRFR cab, how do ou think would it work with voice and/or other instruments? Most important: if I set my Pod Go with the Headrush FRFR 108, will they sound more or less the same with other FRFR cab (e.g. when I have to share the stage and the PA with other bands and use the monitors provided by the venue/festival etc.)
I am looking for a power amp to use with a scarlet 2i2 plugged into a midi-pedalboard and an iPhone/iPad with Bias FX2. This was I could have a really light portable and reliable system. My plan was to get all the presets ready at home and then use it on small venues and rehearsal room. If in larger places I could always use the output to the main mixer and PA? Would the Headrush FRFR108 work well like this?
Would the 108 also be good for synth, farfisa organs etc, instead of a keyboard/piano amp? Or should I get the alto version? Can the mic preamp in the Alto be turned on/off? The Headrush do look better thou...
Tks for the video, then if I am understanding correctly the Headrush and Alto are the same thing but the Alto has an additional input with a mic preamp? If that's the case probably i'll get the alto to have more versatility
Hi Doc! I’m learning to play bass guitar. I am currently in the market for a practice/home bass amp. Would you recommend the 108 as a “practice bass amp”? I don’t intend to buy amp modeller yet so the bass guitar would be either plugged directly into the one of 108’s inputs or bass guitar to mixer to 108. Do you think this will sound OK? Thanks for the video!
Sounds bad ass... I currently use a boss gt100 with studio monitors, it sounds good but sometimes Id like to be able to play louder. How do you compare this to studio monitors? Are these good for music listening as well?
it's very good to listen music, as tv soundbar, mixer PA, and with guitar modeler too (amplitube, fractal, kemper, synapse and so on). I bought one and it's first time im happy with my guitar gear!
I just started playing Guitar and bought an Eleven Rack, been using the headphone jack with my PC speakers at the moment. As long as I keep the 11r volume under 3 it sounds okay for just in the bedroom. I want to buy this HeadRush item.. can I use both the main outputs from the 11r into both inputs of this HeadRush and it would be stereo? or would I need two? Thanks in Advance
So I ordered the headrush gig, also the frfr headrush, but Im not sure if I just need M Audio studio monitors? Im just jamming in my small room.....HELP!
Studio monitors are what I listen through the majority of the time but the moment you want to play out of the house you will need some kind of speaker. M Audio or Presonus provide some inexpensive options that can fit your budget.
Hey Doc, I have 2 Yamaha DXR PA speakers. Now because I have these already and play it through my mixer is there any point in purchasing the Headrush speaker? Cheers!
Great video and love the speaker. Mine is really bass heavy though so I am assuming I need to get it up off the floor. What kind of stand do you have it on? Thanks!
I owned 3 of these from Guitar Center.. 2 used, 1 brand new. All were just super bass heavy and had to cut lows too much the brand new one was the worst one. Sweetwater had one pop up as unsealed for $160. I took a chance and its perfect. Much less bass heavy.. sadly you may have to try a few to get one that doesnt get bass heavy. Not sure why the new one (unsealed discounted) from Sweetwater was the magic one but it was. Using a helix lt.
I like the touchscreen primarily. Sound wise it is on par with any other unit out there. With that said I do have the HX Effects and HX Stomp from Line 6 to show examples of different setups. I was a Line 6 user since the DL4 delay and M Series pedals. When the HX effects came out it was a no brainer to have all those effects at my disposal.
Could you technically use this for amp plugins on a computer? Say just for jamming & not used for music production like you would with studio monitors? I’m interested in this as an option if it is possible
@B I bought one & have been using it for the last month or so. It’s pretty solid but for a full sound you’re best off getting two of them to act like studio monitors. At the moment I only have one & have to face it to get a full sound. Would be a lot easier with two to get a stereo sound. Sound quality is good though. Not like a real amp by any means but it’s plenty loud.
Ok so got it in and hooked up using STL ignite with a focusrite solo interface using an RCA to XLR cable to the 108. Its awesome. So happy with it. Now I can chug and play at a reasonable volume. I own a Diezel Herbert 180 watt tube head and its a monster. This setup sounds fantastic and is way more practical. I already ordered a second one to play in stereo.
Hi doc, I have a question: most of my rigs are in stereo because I use to have a pair of studio monitors, and worked perfect. I recently purchased a FRFR108 and I'd like to know if I can connect both of the line outputs of my gigboard to both of the inputs of the FRFR, and connect the output of the FRFR straight into the input of my audio interface (for recording in mono), I supposed the output of the frfr has line level, am I right? This setup is in order to avoid to plug and unplug the cables back and forth from the frfr to the interface every time I want to just play or record my tracks. Thanks in advance and I'm sorry if this was a dumb question
Any overheating issues? Testing out two 108s from a friemd and this is the only flaw I've noticed. 45 minutes of playing and they're already moderately hot..
Mine fart with my boss and zoom guitar processor when palm muteing the low e. Do you think it’s the speaker or something I’m doing with my processer? Thanks
I have it, and don't get me wrong, it does sound good! But unfortunately it still has problems with it heating excessively to the point where the speaker will go into "preserve" mode, and it shuts down. And turns back on. Its a VERY big turn-off. I would expect this if I cranked it hard for hours, but it does this simply by being turned on for a measly 15-30 min. The alto had its problems as well and I'm sending it back. To me, you get what you pay for with this speaker. If it works for you, then don't fret. This is my own personal issue. I'm settling for a Laney LRS 112 as a frfr solution. Yeah its got a bigger price tag, and probably not the most portable like a headrush fr108 but at least for what it can do specs-wise, it seems worth it.
I have the headrush 112 and am thinking of switching to laney too. I like the headrush but it really doesn’t play like a guitar cab at all and it’s bothering me.
@@wr1039 For sure. But as McFarland says, you have to come to grips that its not supposed to be a standard cab. You would have to get used to the new sound. However, the other options do give the amp-in-a-room feel. If it wasn't for my issue I was having, I would have bought a pair of the fr108s.

@@PaulChoate-s4v The 12 is pretty big so the 108 is way more portable. They both sound really good.
No.. you should buy TWO FRFR 108s! They are great!!!
Gonna use them in cinema middle back surround experience have all a great beautiful weekend
Have fun!
Hello here from The Netherlands Amsterdam Thanks so much have a great weekend waiting for 2 Headrush 108 coming around 10 days not in STOCK bye bye
Katana into FRFR sounded great. Might need to try that
thanks for watching.
@@davecooper360 thanks. i think i would get the 108 and then for a big gig - if that ever happens - get two in stereo
@@Glensully that would definitely sound awesome!
So what do we buy if we want the guitar-in-the-room sound, but also want to use the HeadRush or some other modeller for the amp and cab emulations? Laney FR cab?
Hey Doc! Love the videos you do! Can you plug an orange transistor head into it. How many ohms is it mono? Thanks
The FRFR108 only accepts line level signals so you can't run a speaker output into this 108 speaker. If you do you will blow something up.
Just picked up a great deal from Thomann. Headrush pedalboard with free headrush frfr 108 speaker all for €849. Can’t wait to get them
That will be a killer setup.
You do great work!
a great tone 👏🏻...and a good dimostration ! A++ 👌🏻
Thanks!!! It’s a great speaker.
My electric guitar JP Majesty has a piezo. Will this speaker perform with my guitar if I want play the piezo acoustic sound where a regular guitar amp chokes that sound off
Great review! I wonder if this will work for a keyboard, and mic set up? For busking.
Well you have to have a mic pre since the 108 only accepts line levels. Using a small mixer would probably work ok but getting a battery powered amp with line and mic inputs would work better for busking.
I bought one to use with my HX Stomp in my office for jam practice and also light rig as carry cabs and amp heads way too heavy for me.
Its a great little speaker.
@@DoctorMcFarlandStudios indeed mine just arrived and hooked it up to my HX Stomp and sounds almost as good as tube amp and cab! Saves me money to not buy any more expensive tube amps and cabs too.
Bro the dance moves on fleek!!
I bust them out every once in a while
So you think this would be good for running a helix at home for practicing ? It seems to be the most affordable option other than studio monitors which I have and don’t have faith they will do what this will.
Thanks Doc! It is a great review. May I ask how would this Headrush frfr108 compare to your KRK V6s (correct me if Im wrong about the model but I believe they are some high-end series of KRK) in the guitar tone category? :) I am in a dillemma of whether getting a pair of high end monitors or some mid-tier monitors with a 8 inch frfr like this for Neural DSP plugins.
Hmmmm studio monitors are always gonna sound better and can make for a good home studio/entertainment setup.
Awesome review and demo - thank you.
As for the Bluetooth feature, is it possible to play a song say from a phone, and then jam along to it all from the same 108?
Yes that is how it the new version of the speaker works. Headrush and bluetooth goes through the same speaker.
This speaker is the best thing I have ever purchased.
@@aliengrey6052 it would just be me who heard the sterio though yeah?
Bagged this partly on the BBB Asus of this video 👍
Thanks for posting - very interesting.
What is the reason you plugged in to both inputs? I've never tried that before. I have both a 108 and a 112 and love them both.
No reason really.
Ok, lol, I thought you might have found the "secret sauce" or something. 👍
same thoughts wondering
I see you have a set of Rokits behind you... could you just have two HR FRFR instead of the KRK's?
The reason I ask is I am looking for a studio speaker for my productions and I want to free up space by selling some of my guitar amps... would a pair of these cover me for playing backing tracks and jamming and making tracks on DAW/DAWless productions... I have a couple MFX boards that have IR and such..
Those are the KRK V8 speakers. FRFR speakers won't be the same as a good set of studio monitors. I would not use FRFR for serious mixing.
That issue with cables pushing against the ground when in wedge configuration is kind of a deal breaker for me. But I wish that wasn't the case because the price is right.
I use right angle cables.
what are you playing starting at 5:47? it sounds very familiar but i can’t remember…
oh i know, i was thinking of “river of deceit” by mad season.
I have no idea I was just strumming through some chords
What does the countour and groundc buttons do?
Contour boosts the lows and highs. Ground can take away some hum that you get in some electrical situations.
Thanks. I found it very useful
Glad it was helpful!
The FRFR sounds great across the whole frequency spectrum and playing music sounds natural.
Thanks man, this is awesome
Hi - can this sit on a mic stand, or does it require:a specific stand? Thanks for the review!
You would need to put in on a speaker stand to stand it up vertically.
Sure would. Let me know how you like it. You can use the links in the description of this video to help out the channel as you make your purchases.
Would the 108 also be good for synth, farfisa organs etc, instead of a keyboard/piano amp?
Or should I get the alto version?
Can the mic preamp in the Alto be turned on/off?
The Headrush do look better thou...
the 108 can accept any line level signal with ease.
Is it just for guitar or doable for electronic drum kit as PA?
It works for drums as well.
Tks for the video, then if I am understanding correctly the Headrush and Alto are the same thing but the Alto has an additional input with a mic preamp? If that's the case probably i'll get the alto to have more versatility
The two are very similar in terms of specs but the Headrush is tuned a bit more to be used with Digital Modelers.
Thanks for the video. Do you think the 8-inch version would do a little solo gig? like concerts of 80 people?
yeah it would work just fine.
Hmm.. can I use this with bass preamp for stage monitoring..?
yep
Cool Stuff I am getting two of those for my GigBoard
Thanks for this video. Quick question - how did you play music through it? Just plug in via a 6.3mm standard guitar type lead?
I connected it to my mixing board :)
@@DoctorMcFarlandStudios Thanks!!
When you are plugging the cables in and giving a description, you should be showing the business end. As you showed the back, show when plugging.
Thanks for your critique. there is only two inputs so im sure you can figure out the rest.
Thanks for the video!
yes I would use the Mixer then into the 108. The 108 doesn't have a preamp but just line level inputs.
I bought one and it's first time im happy with my guitar gear!
get get it Dr. McFarland
Do people use something like this with a laptop, audio interface, and a Neural DSP plugin for example?
Yes that is a viable option.
Is the Alesis Strike Amp 8 identical to this?
I haven't seen that one. Im sure they are similar.
The dance moves are pretty cool though.
So if I have a Headrush FRFR108 and a cab sim such as a Xvive Nini Di Cab Sim with a amp sim like Tech21 SansAmp Liverpool that would work?
yes the 108 will accept any line level signal.
Very well done! Thanks! 👍🏾
Hey Doc, I have 2 Yamaha DXR PA speakers. Now because I have these already and play it through my mixer is there any point in purchasing the Headrush speaker? Cheers!
I think you are fine with what you have.
Is it advisable to also run the band mix through it so I wouldn't need an additional stage monitor?
Hey doc can I plug my Katana 100 head to the frfr 108
yes I would use the Rec out of the Katana
Great video and love the speaker. Mine is really bass heavy though so I am assuming I need to get it up off the floor. What kind of stand do you have it on? Thanks!
In this video it’s sitting on a drum throne. I would back off the bass in your rigs to see if that clears it up.
Is one 112 sufficient for home use ? Or 2 x 108 a better option ? Thx
either size is fine for home use. 108 is very loud.
Can I directly plug in my analog pedals with it?
As long as one of the pedals is a preamp pedal to provide some sort of amp tone.
How would this sound with a analog pedalboard? Im looking for feedback but cant find any
what do you like about the headrush effects unit and would u get it over the helix
I like the touchscreen primarily. Sound wise it is on par with any other unit out there. With that said I do have the HX Effects and HX Stomp from Line 6 to show examples of different setups. I was a Line 6 user since the DL4 delay and M Series pedals. When the HX effects came out it was a no brainer to have all those effects at my disposal.
if u had to pick the stomp or headrush what would you pick
Could you technically use this for amp plugins on a computer? Say just for jamming & not used for music production like you would with studio monitors? I’m interested in this as an option if it is possible
Just ordered one to try this very same thing. If I remember, I'll come back here and let you know.
I have been playing for 22 years and the "feel" is all there. Sadly my Diezel probably won't be getting as much love from now on.
Wow that sounds so much more clear than mine. Sounds like mine is in a tin can with a blanket over it. Dont know how to clear it up. So bassy
Do you have your positioned close to a wall?
I wouldn't worry about a little heat.
Mine fart with my boss and zoom guitar processor when palm muteing the low e. Do you think it’s the speaker or something I’m doing with my processer? Thanks
May have a bit too much low end on the amp model.
So can i use the headphone output of my Marshall MG 15 plugged into the Headrush or do i have to us a multi affects unit?
Yeah the FRFR108 can accept any line level or headphone output.
@@DoctorMcFarlandStudios Awesome :-)
Mine doesn’t overheat at all. Weird...
@@DoctorMcFarlandStudios It sure is...
I wonder if its a electric output problem in my house or something.
I have one and just way to much low end. Also sounds like it has a blanket over it. You have to eq the crap out of everything
Nah not really. If you have the speaker close to a wall then you will hear for perceived bass response.
