It's not about faking a smile, it's about the energy you project with your facial expressions. Even if you're tired, your face can't "look tired", it really affects your performance. Dancing is about performing with your whole body, your face is not excluded. Just look at Lisa's face when she performs a dance - she smirks, she stares, she smiles, she sneers if the dance is more badass, she is doing something with her face all the time. That's why Lisa told her to smile, it's fitting for the style of the dance and song. The smile will also subconsciously help you to inject the right energy into the dance moves, it's suppose to help you "feel" it more. The contestants of this show are trainees so they're already expected to get the basics down in dance, singing, and rapping. They know that well. This was a brutal competition from the start. So if you were even slightly off that could cost you an elimination. There were over 100 trainees here and some of them were even already debuted artists that joined the show to get a 2nd shot at rejuvenating their career. This was a talent survival show where among the 100+, only the top 9 would debut as a group and the rest were slowly eliminated. Also, Lisa has been dancing for more than 2 decades now. She picks up details that we as non-dancers wouldn't be able to.
Yes, this was a survival show not some academies where you pay and the teacher will help you to learn little by little. Survival show is expected to be harsh in justified way. LISA did a great job, she is just strict during perf in comparison she's just giving them contructive critism not to invalid her students skills. If they don't put effort or improve there's big possibility they got eliminated in early round.
Lisa's actually trilingual. She's fluent in her native Thai then secondary in Korean and English. Youth With You was a show in Mainland China in which Lisa was a mentor, so she spoke English and Thai to the contestants (who were Chinese) but they had an interpreter in the room for the trainees.
Youth with you is the competition show and the show first introduces 109 female trainees from different companies who are being voted on by viewers (girls will elimination reality show and only top 9 trainees with the most votes in the final episode get to debut as a group).
