    • @woodfur00
      @woodfur00 3 года назад +23

      Her really obviously over-treated hair is honestly distracting to me. It's like they were afraid to have her look even vaguely natural, or like they're just so used to women looking like this that they thought no one would notice. By all means, have her bleach and straighten her hair as a choice, but not as something she just regenerates into.

      I liked when 10 says that regeneration feels like dieing and someone else goes swanning off in his body. He seems to resent the doctor that comes after him.
      Makes it seem that regeneration is more like dieing and giving birth to a new child that happens to retain your memories and skills.
      Even though it's obviously not been done well so far, exploring this new heritage from the last season for The Doctor could be used to add more to the story of what regeneration actually is and where It comes from.
      Although I hate the idea that it's just genetic!

    • @cameronjosephvideos5942
      @cameronjosephvideos5942 2 года назад +11

      There are exceptions. All of them seem to respect Hartnell. Tennant and Smith also actually get on well, it feels more like sibling bickering as opposed to how mean spirited Pertwee and Troughton seemed.

    • @Lexe2507
      @Lexe2507 2 года назад

      @KVAcedo27 i see what you're getting at with it feels like the same person but me personally i think it makes more sense to think of it like a clone of the doctor in a new body with a slightly different personality. The clone might feel like the original but in essence the old doctor is gone as sad as that is. Like Meta crisis 10 for example, That is us seeing regeneration at what it really is creating a new body with the same memories and the same love for Rose but not really the same. It also adds a bit more weight to regeneration.

    • @BWMagus
      @BWMagus 2 года назад +6

      @@Lexe2507 But...that's simply wrong. #6 says this in one of the audio episodes; every regeneration slightly shuffles around the exact character traits, so one might be slightly grumpier or slightly funnier, but the same basic person is maintained. So, The Doctor himself has disagreed with you. But it does still FEEL like dying, sure--it's unpleasant, and being changed like that is like taking if you were injected with mood altering drugs that lasted forever. Sure, you could adapt, but you'd always feel different.
      I think the basic root of the Doctors giving each other attitude is ego; he's always sort of arrogant, and tends to dislike the other Doctors because they either remind him of his more childish past or unfortunate future, depending of course on whether we're talking about the perspective of the younger or older Doctor. Troughton and Pertwee were also personal friends from before being in the show, so I think they got into the bickering.

      Funny story about how the costume came about. The costume designer was working on it and JNT just kept saying it's not tasteless enough and it just became a cycle until the designer got fed up and came up with the costume and then joked "is this tasteless enough for you" to which JNT replied "that's perfect" I may be paraphrasing in some areas but I believe this is actually what happened.

    I think the biggest crime of the 13th Doctor's outfit is the fact she's always wearing this elaborate earring piece that harkens back to the fobwatch across the waistcoat type accessory, but you can never ever see it in the show. It's such a cool, distinctive piece that highlights her alien-ness in a bit of a modern way and having the hairstyle accommodate that earring alongside an outfit that's a decent blend between antique and modern would have resulted in a super iconic look. I just feel bad for the person who designed the earring really, their handiwork is only to be appreciated in the occasional screenshot or promotional image. Other than that I think the silhouette of a Doctor is also important to the costume, and they've kinda nailed that accidentally with the 13th Doctor. The long coat flowing from a short yet confident frame with the hair creating a globe-like shape out of the head. There are some really solid examples of signification with the 13th Doctor's design, but the problem is there's little to it beyond signification. The 8th and 9th Doctors feel much more like their outfits were bought from a charity shop. The 13th Doctor's outfit is so custom, it's very unrealistic.

    I really love the Season 18 look for the Fourth Doctor. The new sweeping coat and giant bunched-up scarf make Tom look so imposing, he fills the frame every time he's onscreen. (Which is a good match with his more somber, stern personality in those stories.) He's not a Bohemian swashbuckler anymore, so much as a cosmic wizard.
    I think it actually helps with the transition to Peter Davison too, in a way? Like, the S18 costume is symbolic of the time Tom's spent in the role; he's been built up into a more mythic figure across the years, but the role's also weighing on him heavily. And when he regenerates, Five seems a lot smaller and more vulnerable when all that 'armor' has been stripped away.

    I'd like to see some exploration of how the limitations of the medium might have influenced costume design at the time. There's only so many details you're going to pick out if you're watching it on a tiny, low resolution TV. I think there might be an argument that you can get away with more garish looks, because that's one of the few visual cues that will actually cut through that the character you're watching is "alien". Especially with black and white, or 70s/80s TV visual artefacts.

    If I saw Tennant in the street, I'd assume he was a teacher whose school insists that insists on having an overly formal dress-code for the teachers, but he is casual and friendly enough to get away with wearing trainers with it. But if I saw Smith in the street, I'd assume he was going to a wedding but is too broke for a proper suit so he went with tweed.
    As for 13, I do find it very relatable the idea that she found this one jumper that she liked and just bought a thousand versions of that look, because as an autistic person I have like ten variations on the same basic look so I can be technically change my clothes without being in a style I'm not comfortable in for too long, but I do wish that she'd wear the scarf more, that shorter rainbow scarf is really nice.

    When the First Doctor regenerated into The Second not only did his face change but so did his clothes that's the only time so far that's happened in a regeneration the only thing left of the First Doctor was the cloak and the ring. The Second Doctors outfit is entirely different the scruffy coat he wears he found in the chest. I do agree I prefer Paul McGann's TV Movie look than his Night of the Doctor look I'm just use to seeing him in the Wild Bill Hickcok outfit it just suits his Doctor and he is a 1990s Doctor. I didn't mind Davison's, Baker's and McCoys look it was the 80s it was the decade of bad fashion. The Hat Sylvester McCoy wears in The TV Movie is the exact same hat he wore during his tenure. David Tennant's look I thought was cool at the time for the 2000s I do feel his look is alittle out of date now. Matt Smith based his bowtie on Troughton after watching Tomb of the Cybermen. The rainbow shirt that Jodie wear's kind of is fashion because I've seen alot of women wear shirts like that with a rainbow stripe I think it's also a representation kind of. I think some Doctors suit for variants, some don't.

    My theory about the whole 'Jodie has 1000 variations of the same shirt' thing is that the TARDIS wardrobe has basically infinite pieces of clothing. The reason she had to find her outfit in a charity shop is because she didn't find the TARDIS until The Ghost Monument. So basically, she found a shirt that she liked and by the time Rosa rolled around she had scoured the TARDIS wardrobe for different versions of that shirt

      I really liked it to be honest. I think the orange might have been a result of its prevalence in various sections of black culture, which I appreciate in a vague sort of way, but mainly I like the orange because (similar to the bow tie, scarf, celery stick and technicolour coat) it makes her getup instantly recognisable. In response to the "tone it down" comments, while it's a very bright colour, take another look at the outfit; there's less orange than you think.
      Plus, taking a closer look at it, that coat is actually pretty dope. Half expect her to be an officer of the Navy or something.

My fav jimjam top because that's my comfort thing to wear around the house, some trousers with big pockets, all-year suitable boots because I'm loosing the track of time, but a cool coat because hey I need to celebrate going out at all. Oh yeah, and my/my great-great(...)-grandfather's rainbow scarf because I have nothing else to cover my face with. Which, admittedly, is aging well, but I doubt that was the intention.

    I don't dislike Jodie's outfit, to be fair. I actually really like the double ear piercing earring. It's an underrated part of the costume that is iconic in its own way, but doesn't get attention drawn to it like Matt's bow tie. The rainbow jumper looks good, I think, as does the long blue coat. Although it's certainly not as iconic as a lot of other Doctor coats. And the fact that they had her wear boots was a very interesting choice, I kind of like that.

  • @doubleEspressoShartini

    If I were to take each of The Doctor's best outfits and rank them, it would go as such.
    01. The Twelfth Doctor's World Enough and Time outfit - This was so hard trying to pick a best of Capaldi's outfits, Robot of Sherwood, Heaven Sent, Thin Ice just to name a few but this merges the darker colors and simplistic nature of early Twelve outfits and vibrant velvet and flash of later outfits and it leaves him going out in supreme style.
    02. The Eighth Doctor's Night of the Doctor outfit - I gotta disagree with you on this one, I think this is a brilliant design, taking what was old and updating it while also doing something new.
    03. The Third Doctor's Planet of the Spiders outfit - While he has many great outfits, I'm a sucker for black & sky blue and it just makes Pertwee look like an absolute slick boss for his last story
    04. The Fourth Doctor's Season 18 outfit - Controversial I know but I love the color and vastness that this costume has, everything just looks suitably grand.
    05. The Eleventh Doctor's Nightmare in Silver outfit - New purple coat, black velvet waistcoat & sky blue shirt make for a wonderful mix of colors.
    06. The First Doctor's An Unearthly Child outfit - Astrakhan hat, cloak, striped scarf and the only time the jacket is done up in the series, this gives him a very mysterious figure which is fitting as it's the first time we see him.
    07. The Sixth Doctor's Terror of the Vervoids outfit - I love all the colors that this costume has and it makes it look complete (btw it is explained in Jubilee that the coat represents the height of sartorial ellegance so make of that what you will and if any Doctor made it it wouldn't have been Six as he is seen selecting it after regenerating)
    08. The Tenth Doctor's Time Crash outfit - The way the blue suit and wine shirt pop just makes this nice to look at (I think I may just have a thing for blue/red color combos)
    09. The Ninth Doctor's purple jumper - I think this one just pops the most out of his jumpers, a pity he only wore it once
    10. The Second Doctor's first outfit - No real change from what he would wear for his entire run but he has larger tartan style pants which I think look a lot better than the more Hartnell like pants he wore later.
    11. The Thirteenth Doctor's Spyfall outfit - Vastly superior to her hodge podge/ thrown up a 3 course dinner but none of it belongs in your stomach look that Thirteen usually has, she keeps the overall silhoutte of her look but makes it look a lot cooler.
    12. The Fifth Doctor's Season 21 outfit - An improvement with the added stripes on the jumper and slight color change on the coat but still a pretty boring costume overall.
    13. The Seventh Doctor's Season 25 outfit - I'm not a fan of his overall look, I just think it looks very out of place having mismatching elements all throughout the costume, Season 26 looks even more awkward because now you just have a darker jacket which makes the pullover standout more and I think the TV Movie costume is rather dull and boring so I have to go for Season 25 as his best as it is a bit more cohessive.

    In defence of not wearing the same thing between doctors
    People are different sizes
    Like Peter Davison would probably look like a kid in his dad's clothes if he wore any of Tom bakers looks

    Headcanon: Peter Capaldi was watching Broadchurch when he regenerated into Beth.
    Her look, other than the lightened hair is so similar with the similar uncluttered necklines, similar hair styling, makeup, accent, tempo and tone of speaking, expressions... the costume is different, but how it presents her is... really shows that the same guy handled costumes for both. Crazy that she's a grieving mother in one and an adventurous alien in the other. HOW can they be styled so similarly?
    Olivia Coleman appears briefly as Prisoner Zero - completely different. Alec Hardy and 10 could be completely different actors altogether but then that's probably true of every Tennant role. So why does Jodie look the same just different clothes? I think it adds to the effect of her failing to get into character. It is astonishing nobody on the set commented.
    Of the new Doctors I think I like Capaldi's costume best, then the other men are about the same - each costume is perfect for them. And then there is Jodie.

    I've had ideas for doctor outfits, and my idea for a female doctor's outfits pre Jodie was sort of being a mix of formal and informal, not sticking to the same thing 100%of the time but having different jackets, boots, shirts etc. Like, having a long baggy coat with a tshirt and just normal trousers and trainers, or a scruffy shirt, waist coat with black leather boots, or casual blends with dungarees and coats. Something more unique and kinda causal Capaldi esque, but still very different as the doctor is used to being a man over 2000 years, it would make sense if the outfits were less form fitting and more thrown together but still very doctorish, then gradually introduces a cohesive style that's unique to that doctor, while still keeping variation to not have the 10 effect

For example, they could have taken the 4th bakers scarf and implemented it into the 5th doctors costume. Not taking it over but just having it still be there? Just so there’s always something that ties the present to the past whilst still keeping the individuality that each doctor has
