You are the ONLY individual which has a current and concise video that explains the registration process. I'll need to make a couple changes to mine but at least I know where to go and how to do it. Thank you very much for putting out this video!!! Pat WA8SXP
I just followed your registration instructions and before you even finished the video I already received my registration approval email. They are on the ball today, lol.
Thank you so much! Brand new to Ham. Just got my Callsign today and trying to figure out how to get all of this setup. This was the best and most concise video I could find on the topic! 73 KF8AUM
Thanks! This was extremely helpful. On a side note, your accent (or lack thereof) made me curious, so I hit up your QRZ page and I see you're originally from Broome county, NY. I live in Endicott, and actually took my ham license test at Kopernik. I also noticed you mentioned Ford (AB2HS). His repeater is probably the most active repeater in the area, so hear him on the air all the time. Small world.
It’s always good to hear from folks back home. Say hi to Ford for me the next time you see him. I try to make the BARA meetings if I happen to be back in the area on the right Wednesday. 73, Tom
Thank You for putting these training videos together, they have been very helpful. On the initial registration under the information tab, on your video you showed no initial in your first call sign. I tried that and got an error pointing to no initial. So until I put an initial in the box it would not update. So I stayed away from putting A, B, or C etc. as you stated and went with J since my name is Jim, and it updated fine. Now getting ready to start Part 3.
I wish I could hit the like button more than once, because you sir, deserve more than one. Thank you again so very much for these videos it is much appreciated!
Tom, thanks for all the information so far on the Icom D-Star mode. I've had D-Star capable radios for years and never used them, mainly because where I am at the closest repeater is 100 miles away. I look forward to the next episode where the D-Star cowboy rides into the sunset, out at lest kisses the girl! W7BUC 73
This is just what I was looking for Tom. You're right, for whatever reason I had a really hard time trying to find the steps to do this. Thanks! KA0AVG 73
Great summary of the registration process... which does seem daunting initially. Suggestion - Next video - might not hurt to do a quick vocabulary review - explaining the terms "terminal","repeater", and "reflector"... and maybe a few terms that I'm not thinking of. I think I could probably operate at this point if I were within range of another DSTAR user without a repeater - or through a repeater - (none are within range)... but the whole idea of using a hot spot - versus using the radio as a terminal... (which I think means that the radio is connected (usb through a computer??? and/or wifi?) to the internet and when you push PTT you are not transmitting anything other than over the internet). I had pretty much succeeded in registering through a repeater in Portland - but I changed my excess "terminal" entries from "A" to "Y" and "Z" at your suggestion. (The registration process if fussy - you have to type CAPITAL letters for the terminal alphas). 73 and thanks! Bill / KM6KV
I just registered through a repeater gateway URL and was informed that I should register directly through the generic (non-repeater) D-STAR registration website and was asked to follow the generic site link to "complete" (re-do) the registration.
I wonder if that's because the repeater gateway is no longer being maintained or if there's been some change in general policy for DStar? Frankly, I think it would be less confusing for all if there was a single, common place for everyone to register.
I registered through a repeater and did not get a response. I had to track down the trustee of the repeater and send him an (kind) email to find out if my info actually got to his inbox or not and he apologized that he doesn't get many requests and doesn't check that email very often. I bet it took two weeks but after he responded maybe one day. So I would recommend if you do register through a repeater that might be in a small rural area that you be (nicely) persistent and follow up on your request with the trustee of that repeater if you don't hear back in two or three days. Remember, these are volunteers that do this work. Be kind. I use an openSPOT2 and a pi-star hotspot for Dstar connections but not at the the same time. I also have two Dstar capable radios, the same ones you own. Do I need a separate terminal initial for each one if I don't use them at the same time? This next question is a request. Are you going to cover the capability of the IC-705 (pretty much the same as the IC-9700) to connect to gateways with out the use of a hotspot or a repeater? I have played with this feature but have not made a contact using it. I am sorry if I am getting ahead of your scheduled video subjects. Maybe you could cover it in a part 4 video. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for great video. I am little confused about registering for repeaters. I click links an it brings you back to dstar gateway system to login. There no good ones in Arkansas. So trying Alabama repeaters
The antenna was dual band rubber-duckie antenna from one of my HTs. Nothing special. I was using a hot-spot that was about 20 feet away from the radio. So probably a paper clip bent open would have worked fine in that case.
Like you I registered with a local repeater. Now unfortunately it seems like their dstargateway site is down. Is there a way to transfer to the generic registration? 73! Brian WB8AM
No, you do not. Once you are registered in the DStar system, you are covered for anything on DStar. That includes reflectors, repeaters, etc. You should be able to operate through your local repeater and also access any gateway functions to other repeaters, etc. through it.
My callsign is registered but the repeater I registered through in 2010 no longer has a website for registration. And the generic one doesn't know me. So what do I do now? I can't register again and while my old registration works on the radio I am for all practical purposes an orphan.
Hi. For starters, you can check your registration status in the DStar system here: regist.dstargateway.org/regcheck/index.php. Just enter your callsign and click Submit. If it says that you're not registered, then you should be fine to register on the generic server as if you never have. If it says that you are registered and lists the non-existent repeater as the registration site, then I'm not sure. I'm reaching out to a friend who knows a lot more about DStar than I do.
P.S. - I just checked your callsign and it shows you registered on the W4AES Gateway. I assume that is the repeater site that went dark? BTW - Was that a repeater at the old Amateur Electronic Supply in Orlando? I bought my old Yaesu 857D there years ago when we were in Florida on vacation.
Hi Anthony. You can program it into the radio just like any other memory channel you would program for VHF/UHF. Just put in the frequency, make sure that you have Duplex and Offset set correctly. Then just select DV (DSTAR Voice - or Digital Voice) for the mode instead of FM. Then the radio should key up your hotspot.

Keep the EXCELLENT videos coming. Thank you
Thank you for this series. There's lots of videos available, but I never realized I had to register! It's great since I picked up an ID52!

Thanks Lance. Part 3 is finally out. I'm sure there will be more, not sure how many.
That was pretty cool graphics! Thanks Tom and 73.

Correction, I should have read the registration email instructions first, all is good with initials and registering.
Looking forward to part 3

Hi Tom thanks for the info, really enjoy your video, any chance you could do one for connecting the ic-705 to RUMlogNG 👍😘
In the first video you said you have a duplex hot spot. I have a hot spot that I use on DMR, not d, will it work for DSTAR?
Yes. Full duplex is not necessary for a hotspot on DMR or DStar. It just adds a few convenient extra features
@@HamRadioA2Z I have a Hotspot that I do DMR. Just wanted to know if it work for DSTAR. 73. W4DES
Early in this video, you show a 705 radio. What kind of antenna are you using on the radio?
The antenna was dual band rubber-duckie antenna from one of my HTs. Nothing special. I was using a hot-spot that was about 20 feet away from the radio. So probably a paper clip bent open would have worked fine in that case.
What full duplex hotspot were you using Thank you VE2AED
It’s an MMDVM hotspot board by N5BOC. He sells the boards and you just need a Raspberry Pi Zero W to mount it on. I’ve been very happy with it.
Like you I registered with a local repeater. Now unfortunately it seems like their dstargateway site is down. Is there a way to transfer to the generic registration?

Ok so i registered generically but not through a repeater. Do i still need to register to my local repeater?

@@HamRadioA2Z Yeah, that is the one I can't seem to find now. And I believe it did belong to Amateur Electronic Supply.
How to register you not have a local D-star my area
Please keep these videos coming. Va3plj
how do you get the hotspot info into your 705?
Hi Anthony. You can program it into the radio just like any other memory channel you would program for VHF/UHF. Just put in the frequency, make sure that you have Duplex and Offset set correctly. I got an email back in about 20 minutes.
